As the Sherman plans to move back into it's building next year I thought I'd put two questions out there about the future of the Sherman.

With the advent of NTW and Theatre Genedlaethol, two non building-based touring national theatres, it is necessary for the building-based Sherman to tour shows? Would their money be better spent, on more shows, in the new building? Or do the Sherman tours play a vital role in the new writing culture of Wales?

With Theatre Genedlaethol producing high quality, internationally engaging Welsh language work, does the Sherman need to continue producing in Welsh? Is there enough quality Welsh work being produced to warrant two producing houses?

Both of these things, if changed, would have huge constitutional and funding implications for the company.

But with the theatre landscape in Wales radically different from when the Sherman Cymru was formed is it time to think radically about the Sherman Cymru?

Tim, in the absence of a torrent of engaged responses from the NTW community, here is my trickle.

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru (TGC) has been touring productions since 2003, four years before Sherman Cymru (SC) was formed by merger in 2007.  The more recent change was the advent of the english language NTW.  Is the landscape as radically different as you suggest?

TGC and SC are together touring SC's "Llwyth" this autumn.  Do you think this example of cooperation, where two companies' missions overlap, is sensible?

Clwyd Theatr Cymru produces at its home and also tours some productions within Wales and beyond.  So does the Torch Theatre, on a smaller scale.  Would it be wasteful for all SC productions to be confined to Senghennydd Road?  Surely some SC work is highly suited to presentation to different audiences in Wales?

Fin de trickle.  What does anyone else think?

In response to the parallel discussion in the Writers' Group, may I ask what is the distinction between an ACW-funded body developing and producing non-welsh/wales-based writers and the production by ACE-funded organisations of new work by welsh writers in, say, Swiss Cottage and Whitehall?

If anyone is interested in this thread there is a discussion going on in the Writers' Group.

Kenneth - Yes, as I say in my post I have contradictory feelings about the issue.
