Seriously Funny Theatre with Ridiculusmus

Ridiculusmus has been producing seriously funny theatre for over 20 years. Their origins are in the shadowlands of theatre and comedy, beginning as a rabble of graduates from the Poor School in London, adapting comic novels for the London fringe, and evolving over the last quarter century into a robust double act. The company is now well established as a flagship UK performance group touring nationally and internationally with an oxymoronic aim: to be both serious and funny.

Taking projects that Ridiculusmus are currently working on as a basis, participants will use improvisation to explore the topics and make material then analyse, edit and revisit to develop short pieces of work.

The two tutors for the week will be the joint Artistic Directors of Ridiculusmus – Jon Haynes and David Woods.

Jon Haynes grew up in a household without a television. At school he won an award for speaking Greek verse and decided to become an actor. He attended Sheffield University and, seven years later and still as mad as a hatter, he enrolled at The Poor School in London. It was there that he met the co-founders of what would become Ridiculusmus.

David Wood has deployed his unique brand of naturalismmeetsgaulier bouffonscontemporarydancepunk performance in all of Ridiculusmus’s work. He has completed a PhD at the University of Kent called “How to be Funny” and recently delivered a secular sermon “On Humour” for the School Of Life, much of which he is still ripping off for academic articles.

Working inclusively
The week will also give you the opportunity to experiment in working inclusively. If you have never worked alongside learning disabled performers The Hijinx Residencies are a fantastic opportunity to do so. A number of places at each course will be allocated to students from the Hijinx Academy, our drama training course for talented learning disabled actors.
