This group is here for people interested in, involved in and affected by the play The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning. Join in and contribute as we develop the play further and re-stage our artistic response to his story, and his relationship with Wales.

You can read a blog post by TIm Price on why he wanted to tell this story here.

We're updating a Storify Story around the 2013 remounting, and you can see that here.

This play is a fictional account which has been inspired by a true story. The incidents, characters and time lines have been changed for dramatic purposes. In some cases fictitious characters and incidents have been added to the plot, and the words are those imagined by the author. The play should not be understood as a biography or any other factual account.

Interesting article on the 'Whistleblower Generation' from Gary Young here  - particularly in relation to Mike's blog.

Michael and John have both been blogging in the run-up to the show. John has posted an update on the 'I am Bradley Manning' campaign and Michael has been thinking about the Edward Snowden case and Bradley Manning's relationship to that. Read John's post and watch the video here, and Michael's here

Dear NTW18ers,

I have just added a BRADLEY MANNING event to EVENTS for THURS 9TH MAY

A talk in the SENEDD on THURSDAY 9TH MAY by Chase Madar, (a NY based human rights lawyer and contributor to The London Review of Books and Le Monde Diplomatique), who is over here from the States promoting his book 'The Passion of Bradley Manning'

This lunchtime talk is sponsored by Bethan Jenkins AM (chair of cross party human rights group), and it would be brilliant to see some of you.

And many congratulations on your recent awards and most especially on going to EDINBURGH - might see you there! So glad the production is going to air again. Bradley will most likely be nearing the end of his trial while the show is on there, as they are expecting it will last for around 12 weeks, and it begins on 3rd JUNE. There will be a big demo at the US EMBASSY just before this on SATURDAY 1ST JUNE if anyone is around.

Hello again, all -

Just to say that from today (actually yesterday now!), Monday 26th November, BRAD has been in prison without trial for 2 AND A HALF YEARS....long time for pretrial detention; and FAR too long according to the military legal guidelines (by about 245 days).

This abuse of process (and other matters- see below) will be used by the Defence to argue in Bradley's favour. The trial is now not scheduled to begin until February 2013!

The current hearings are part of the Court Martial but are still pretrial and are to legislate what we might call 'discrete' issues etc.

But we have arrived at the most important part of the proceedings so far - Brad's back in court tomorrow (today!), Tuesday 27th November, where his lawyer - the excellent David Coombs -will argue the case for the charges to be dismissed on account of the 'illegal pretrial punishment' he received at the Brig.

So all the stuff you worked with is being graphically brought up in court (to the extent that the judge has given permission for exhibits - she will have an actual 'suicide mattress' and a 'suicide smock' in court.).

And, as Tim says in the previous post, there is evidence that the orders for the treatment that was meted out to him go a long way up the chain of command to a three star general, and this will no doubt be 'discussed' in court!

And the hearing (27th Nov - 3rd Dec) is also very significant for another reason - and this is that Bradley himself, who we haven't heard from yet, is highly likely to  take the stand to testify for the first time sometime this week.....so watch this space...

If you want to follow anything live try @carwinb or Kevin Gosztola at The Dissenter at Firedoglake for a live blog - they're 5 hours behind. Otherwise read Nathan's reports afterwards at www.bradleymanning.org

And if you want a more thorough update of where things are at now and how they got here, go to wiseupaction.info where I've pulled the strands together in a post explaining where we've got to with lots of links - 'Well, will they get away with it? The unlawful punishment of Bradley Manning'.

Bradley's lawyer has unearthed an email trail - exposing the truth that Bradley was kept on the torturous Prevention of Injury Watch status in Quantico, not because of anything Bradley did, but because of an order from a 3-star General. This is evidence that Bradley's pre-trial treatment was punitive, as the army tried to break him psychologically.

Also in the link below is a transcript of a conversation held in Bradley's cell between Bradley and a guard as his status was upgraded from POI to suicide watch.

Part way through the conversation, Bradley is stripped of his clothes. Here we can see two people trying to make sense of this situation.

The guard tries to do his job professionally, but he can't help recognising the unfairness of the situation, when he says 'I wish I had a hundred Mannings'.

Greetings, NTW chums!

This is a new BRADLEY MANNING petition on AVAAZ, which we helped to draft, so you all HAVE TO SIGN IT AND CIRCULATE IT! (please)

http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Save_human_rights_whistleblower_Br...

We want lots of sigs asap so Avaaz themselves take it up and promote it to their 15m strong membership, many of whom may not already know about Brad.

As well as ‘petitioning’, this is to raise awareness as Bradley's case continues through the Court Martial, and to raise funds for extra legal costs caused by the lack of speedy trial.  (Because the US Govt is being consistently obstructive about evidence, the process has gone on for far longer than anticipated).

DONATE HERE: https://co.clickandpledge.com/sp/d1/default.aspx?wid=38591

The most recent guess about the actual trial is that it could be as late as FEB 2013, by which time Bradley will have been in prison for THE BEST PART OF THREE YEARS. The Govt has limitless public funding, but the defence is funded by donations, so it’s good strategically for the prosecution to delays as much as possible!

The illegal treatment meted out to Brad at Quantico, which includes solitary confinement and being stripped naked, will be dealt with by the Court 1st to 5th OCTOBER  - when the Defence will seek to have the charges dismissed on account of this violation.

Life in prison without parole is on the cards for Brad if US officials get their way, yet what he is accused of doing has given us important information about injustice.

Whistleblowers protect democracy and are salt and light in society – they reveal the truth to the public so that we can respond by calling for change.  What we let the authorities get away with in respect of our whistleblowers will, in part, determine the kind of society we live in.

Bradley’s lawyer said: ‘What happens in this Court Martial is of vital importance TO US ALL.’  And so it is.

SIGN THE PETITION AND CIRCULATE THE LINK!

Thanks!

Hello All,

Sorry to bug you all again so soon, but there is now a crowd funding page for the project I mentioned - 'Desert' from The Molino Group.

As I understand it, they are putting the play on 21st, 22nd and 23rd June, at the Bike Shed Theatre in Exeter http://www.bikeshedtheatre.co.uk/whats-on/desert-by-the-molino-group/  (which is a brilliant space  - there's a picture of it on the website - below a large bike shop, in a huge basement, and with a 'faded old sofa and bike bits turned art (!)' type bar serving food and drink).

This, however, is an initial stage in a larger project, which is what the crowd funding is for.  They want to tour and they also want to 'have a large multi-media element to it', so it has some resonance with ntw18, Tom?

The people fund page is here, with video and lots more info if anyone is interested  http://www.peoplefund.it/themolinogroup/ .

And PS there's another Guardian article which is very supportive of the Defence.

Hey Lindi, thanks for this fantastic update - and you got all the names pretty close to right!!  It's inspiring to know that there are other theatre responses going on out there.  I'd love to see some of them.  We are currently looking at how we can get our show back on the road too.  I also remember the dedication of you and the other activists, turning up at every show to spread the word.  You have inspired me hugely  Let's hope we can each do our par to keep Bradley's story in everyone's eyes and minds.  Jxx
