WalesLab: Japanese artist residency opportunity

WalesLab is National Theatre Wales' artist development initiative focused on new ideas and new voices; using Wales as a landscape for developing new theatre projects. WalesLab invites theatre makers, and artists from other disciplines, to apply for short residencies to develop an idea or piece of work.

To coincide with The Opportunity of Efficiency we are inviting Japanese theatre makers (this can include directors, performers, choreographers, designers, sound artists, puppeteers  writers etc) and artists from other disciplines (from Manga to origami and everything in between) to suggest an idea they would like to begin to develop in Wales.

Two residencies of at least two weeks will be offered, including flights accommodation, space to work, access to equipment, and support in the development of their project.

  • Artists must be Japanese or normally live in Japan
  • Proposed work can be in any media that has a live element (theatre, dance, music, installation, sound art etc)
  • Proposed works must be new and have not received funding from another organisation or government
  • Preference will be given to proposals that are inspired by the context of working in Wales
  • Proposals must be submitted electronically through our online application system (below)
  • You will also be asked to provide documentation of your previous work (video, photos, reviews)
