WalesLab information

WalesLab was NTW's initiative for supporting emerging artists and new ideas for performance. This is a group and discussion forum for those artists involved in WalesLab or those interested in learning more about the various projects under development.

WalesLab consisted of:

Summercamp:

A summer camp for up to twenty theatre makers and artists of varied experience to share ideas, learn form each other and stimulate new collaborations and projects (watch the video below to find out more).

WalesLab projects -

Small groups working for around 1-2 weeks based somewhere in Wales.

Germinate:    Three times a year small groups of artists will be offered the opportunity to spend around two weeks somewhere in Wales developing an idea or project which they have already begun working on, and will share their work with a local audience. There will be three Germinate projects a year, one of which will have an international element.

WalesLab is no longer open for new submissions. Have a look at the 'Your Work' page on the NTW website to find out about how to share your ideas with the company.

Shwmae from Japan!!

This is Yasuro Ito of Undergroud Airport who joined Waleslab project in 2014.8!

And we are very happy to announce that we will realize the idea we developed in Waleslab "Red Dragon and Soil Traveller" in March 3rd to 13th in Japan!! (at Sumida Park Studio Kura Theatre in Tokyo)

This play is a metaphysical tale of the nuclear relationship between Wales and Japan, quoting the story of Branwen of Mabinogi and Red Dragon Myth.

Here is Trailer Music Video of "A Song for Dragon" which we created and sang at Chapter Art Studio.

We use a caldron as a prop which Rhisiart and Dave in Newport gave us as a memory of Wales!

And Caldron will become the symbol of "Fire" which the traveller brings to the rural town in Somewhere.

We use high functional Drone for this video! Please check it out!

AND, WE WILL DO FREE LIVE STREAMING OF "Red Dragon and Soil Traveller" on 12th March!!!

We thank National Theatre Wales, people who supported our visit and research, we will do free live streaming of this musical play with English subtitles on 12th March. It starts from 7pm in Japan,so 11am in Wales!!

So, please check the Underground Airport Web Lounge on 12th of March!!

We started Crowd funding for this streaming! (but it is written only in Japanese! Sorry!!)

We are very excited to create this story! And would like to give all of our heart to each of you in Wales!!

This piece is made by your kindness and support in Wales!! We deeply thank you and will give all back!!

What is the most pressing issue facing Wales?

NTW are taking over the Senedd and Pierhead building in Cardiff Bay as a part of the Big Democracy Project (BDP) on 19thMarch 2016. We are hosting a series of conversations and performances that will explore art/democracy.

A question we will be trying to answer throughout the day is ‘What is the most pressing issue facing Wales?’

Between 2pm and 7pm we are opening up the Pierhead Building to artists and makers to consider this question. Do you have an idea that could explore this or democracy in a wider context?

We are looking expressions of interest from artists who would like to be a part of the day. This could be something created specially for the day, inspired by our central question or something you have already made.

NTW will provide a basic tech setup, lighting, sound and projector in the main hall of the Pierhead building and we have the capacity to expand into some of the smaller spaces in building if needed.

If you're interested in being involved please send a proposal outline to gavinporter@nationaltheatrewlaes.org by Monday 15th Feb, 5.30pm with an outline of what it is you'd like to do, how long it would last (plus set-up/ get out) and what tech support it might need.

*Involvement is on a voluntary basis.

More information about the BDP at the Senedd can be found here www.nationaltheatrewales.org/big-democracy-project-senedd

Hummadruz, The Black Light Theatre of Wales presents the Ultimate Psychedelic Trip: Gustav Holst's "The Planets". Hummadruz looks to the heavens and presents a multi-coloured voyage through the Cosmos in a Space Fantasia.
Gustav Holst’s astrological take on The Planets has inspired seven stories that will transport you to an Underwater Kingdom, the Elastic Rainbow Planet, the Dawn of Time and the outer reaches of our Solar System.
Hummadruz are The Black Light Theatre of Wales and we use our unique style of performance to animate the musical score: Ultra-Violet Circus, Dance, Puppetry and Illusion.

The company, who have previously taken on pieces from the likes of Rick Wakeman, Led Zeppelin and Eat Static ar...e bringing life to the classical suite based on the astrological forces of the planets above. The show toured nationally throughout Wales in 2014 but has now been radically reworked to be staged at the Wales Millennium Centre.
Hummadruz will make you smile, gasp and cry at their interpretations of each of Holst’s original themes, from Mars’ The Bringer of War to Jupiter the Bringer of Jollity.

“Make sure you make time to go see this incredible combination of classical and modern performance.” Buzz Magazine 2014.

Featuring the recording of Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra.

On 19th March 2016 NTW are taking over the Senedd and PierHead building in Cardiff for a day of performance and debate, exploring Democracy and what it means to the people of Wales, this is the culmination of the first phase of the Big Democracy Project. More details of the of the event will be released in the new-year but I wanted to get a head start on one aspect of the day.

NTW are putting together a program of ‘performances’ that will take place in the main hall of the Pierhead building throughout the day and we are inviting artists, groups and individuals from across Wales to become a part of this. We are looking for poets, filmmakers, performers, thinkers, visual artists to present work that fits into the theme of Democracy, this can be a film, a provocation, story, scratch performance etc.

If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved in please get in contact – gavinporter@nationaltheatrewales.org so we can talk further.

Performer Workshop with Familia de la Noche

Award Winning Company Familia de la Noche are running a company workshop at Chapter Arts Centre on Tuesday 24th November,  alongside performances of their 5* show The Greatest Liar in all the World.

A bit about the Company:  We are a new theatre company based in Wales. A pandoras box of actors, dancers, puppeteers, clowns and musicians; we make work that is funny, affecting, devastating, charming and raucously entertaining. We have had several successful runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013, 2014 and 2015 with great 5* reviews for our 2 current shows The Greatest Liar in all the World and The Very Grey Matter of Edward Blank. We were awarded the Blysh Commission by WMC in 2014 and at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival we were awarded the ThreeWeeks Editors Award for our "consistently outstanding" work.

About the Workshop: The workshop is a chance for you to meet the company and for us to meet you. We’ll look at the way which we make our shows and our devising process.  We will also explore elements of clowning, physical theatre and puppetry which we use extensively in our work. The workshop will run from 3pm to 5pm on Tuesday 24th November. Tickets are £15 and are available from Chapter in person or over the phone by calling 029 2030 4400.

Would be lovely to see you there.

Becca

P.s Tickets for the show are limited too, so if you fancy coming book ahead! 7pm 24th Nov. x
