Hi All,

Thought you might be interested in this free event on Friday 31st Oct, 6.30pm at Sherman Cymru. A great opportunity not only to hear Lucy's brilliant play but also a chance to meet our BBC radio producers (the ones who commission us)! Be great to see you there.

Lights Down, Listen Sessions at the Sherman Theatre

The latest initiative to come from the Sherman 5 project is a series of Lights Down, Listen Sessions in collaboration with BBC Wales Radio Drama.  The first event will be held on 31 October, at the Sherman Theatre at 6.30pm.

Our first event is The Devil’s Violin, a magical, murderous and musical fairy-tale by Lucy Rivers, perfect for Halloween!

Life for 16 year old Hannah is pretty miserable. Her mother's a drunk and her baby brother Gethin is an evil little gremlin child. But then one night she meets an alluring violinist who plays the most seductive melodies. He offers Hannah the chance to fulfil her darkest desires. How far will Hannah go to get what she wants?

This is a wickedly playful dark modern fable with an original score composed and performed by Lucy Rivers.

Come along to this free event at the Sherman Theatre to listen, with other audience members, to a  new BBC Wales radio drama by Welsh and Wales-based writers.

After hearing the play in the Sherman Studio there will be the opportunity to meet some of the creative’s involved with this production in a Q and A session.

In attendance will be Alison Hindell, BBC Head of Audio Drama UK, Helen Perry Producer, BBC Radio Drama and Lucy Rivers the writer and composer of The Devil's Violin.

Lucy Rivers is a multi-talented writer, musician and performer. She's achieved great success with her company Gaggle Babble on acclaimed shows such as The Bloody Ballad - uniquely fusing music and theatre, humour and the macabre. The Devil's Violin is her first radio drama.

Places are FREE, but please call the Ticket Office on 029 2064 6900 or visit www.shermancymru.co.uk to book your place.

Hello writing gang - thank you so much to all of you who made Dirty Gifted & Welsh such a big joyful success - whether you were there or cheering from afar. We would love to know what you liked about DGW this year and what we should be doing next year. We are starting to make plans for 2015 now - so please be part of the conversation and help us make sure this event continues to do the best for Welsh and Wales-based writers x

Hi Carmen, great to hear that you had a positive experience at Dirty, Gifted and Welsh.  I was very sorry not to be there, as some of you know I had a bereavement and am only slowly returning to work over the coming week.  However, I heard really good feedback about the day - in particular that it was a useful day for writers - with more workshops and interactions than last time.  It would be great to hear more feedback as we think about the future.

In terms of the idea for road shows and beacons - this is similar to something Simon Coates has been working on in relation to WalesLab.  He's away this week and next but I'll chat to him when he's back.

Dirty Gifted and Welsh,

What a packed day of activities!!! Great to see everyone together and great support too, Thanks to Catherine, Sarah and all the organisers.

On our panel we discussed breaking into Cardiff Scene/Barriers,

Main Points

1. Who to contact? - some are still unsure of the point of contacts/hierarchy

2. Geography.

3. Across many professional companies nationally - not getting a response back

4. Going back to basics - events to get your work heard like Scratch That Itch

We came up with an idea to have road shows by willing NTW staff/ or people on behalf of NTW who can work in key areas across Wales (not just centrally) and have 'beacons' who can be points of contact for North/West/Mid/Coast/ South Wales (a different role to Dramaturgs perhaps??) who can be the middle man between the writer and NTW

We also talked about if you want to get your work out there be proactive and send your work out - be confident, and thus you can then be in a chance with getting produced/commissioned, writers who may have not come from a theatre background often don't know where to start

Hi Carmen - you should be able to do that in Word itself.

Go to File and Save as and then select the format (usually in a drop down box depending on your version) as PDF.

Open Office (free software) will read Word files and export them to PDF.

Anyone know of a free 'word to PDF' converter - the WDA has to be submitted in PDF?

A reminder that the Wales Drama Award deadline is 5pm tomorrow (Thursday 9th October)!

Read John McGrath's blog about the Wales Drama Award and find out more on the Writers Room site.

The Award is both a celebration of writers in Wales and an open call to Welsh talent, whether emerging or established.

The winner of this year’s Wales Drama Award will again receive £10,000, and an opportunity to develop their script and work closely with both BBC Cymru Wales and National Theatre Wales. Two runners-up will each receive £1,000 each.

This opportunity is open to any writer residing in Wales.

Get scribbling. X
