The Shakespeare Summer School is a fun and practical introduction to Shakespeare and Drama. Omidaze Productions feel very passionately about providing access to and ownership of Shakespeare through an exciting and totally interactive approach. We will not be rehearsing a production therefore no former knowledge or experience of Drama or Shakespeare is required.  This year’s key text will be Romeo & Juliet.

The course is written and led by Yvonne Murphy who has over twenty year’s experience in Educational Theatre and works for The National Theatre & Shakespeare Schools Festival specialising in providing access to Shakespeare.

Here is what some of the parents and participants have said about previous years……“A great introduction to Shakespeare…Educational and Fun…My daughter has come home every evening enthused by what she has done…As a parent I was impressed with how much they learnt….Excellent –professional and experienced….Brilliant! I didn’t realise Shakespeare was going to be so good.”

The cost is £90 per student or £160 for two siblings.

One free scholarship place is available each week for a student who would otherwise be unable to attend due to financial hardship.

DEVOTED AND DISGRUNTLED MONTHLY SATELLITE:

WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT YOUTH ACCESS TO DRAMA

JULY 25TH, 6:30- 10PM

An invitation from Danny Braverman (Lecturer Applied Theatre, Goldsmiths) and London Drama:

British theatre faces a crisis.  Our thriving theatre has benefited for generations from a range of opportunities for young people to get involved.  We have great youth theatres, wonderful drama teaching in schools, participatory projects, TIE and other work in schools and trips to see shows. These opportunities have been vital in bringing through the next generation of theatre makers and audiences, as well as being a lifeline for many young people in their growth and development.

This is all now under the biggest threat ever.

  • Despite the government U-turn, following the Ebacc announcement, 23% of secondary schools stopped drama courses.
  • There is a massive decline in the training of drama teachers.
  • Youth theatres are closing weekly, with the National Association of Youth Theatres losing its funded CEO post.
  • Theatres are closing or dramatically reducing their education provision in the face of cuts.

The result of all this is that the gains of decades will be lost and theatre will be even more the preserve of the well-off.

Drama is not a disposable luxury for young people; the treat to be earned after they’ve been force-fed interminable dry curricula and compelled to sit endless demotivating tests.  The drama our young people experience in their schools and youth groups is very often the one thing that gets them out of bed in the morning.  It teaches so much more than chunks of knowledge (which it does).  It explores feelings, creates confident communicators, makes young people eminently more employable and promotes engaged citizenship.

So, it’s time to do something.  This Open Space calls on theatre professionals, drama teachers and young people themselves to come together to grapple with this issue and come up with ways to work together to make sure that future generations have drama education as a right, not a privilege.

FACILITATED BY LEE SIMPSON

THURSDAY JULY 25TH, 6:30 - 10 PM, GOLDSMITHS COLLEGE, GEORGE WOOD THEATRE, LONDON, SE14 6NW

The evening runs using Open Space technology which gives anyone the chance to propose a starting point for discussion, then take part in one of these conversations, flit between them all, or head to the bar.

This event is free! No need to book, just turn up on the night. For further information or to discuss access requirements get in touch with the Improbable Office on 020 7240 4556 or email sarah@improbable.co.uk.

For more information, visit Devoted and Disgruntled.

Hope to see you there.

Youth Arts: Young People’s Survey

Please find below a link to an online survey for the Arts Council of Wales Celebration of Youth Arts Feasibility Study. The survey will allow young people to give their opinion on whether there is a need to further celebrate youth arts in Wales and how this could be achieved.

Anyone under 26 can fill in the survey. You don’t need to be currently involved in youth arts. Surveys must be completed by 08/07/2013.

Fully completed questionnaires will be entered into a prize draw. A winning name will be randomly selected in July 2013 and the winner can choose either an iPod Shuffle, or voucher worth £50 to be spent at either WHSmith or iTunes.

To fill in the questionnaire, click on the following link:
