What’s the most exciting Youth Theatre Project you have been involved in?

National Youth Theatre Wales

Contacting The World

Ensemble Projects

What are the shared ingredients/ characteristics?

Audition process

Devising

Youth expressing the thoughts of the young

Commitment

Teamwork

Passion

What made it unique?

Collaboration

Different ideas from different countries & cultures

We devised the performance

Short timeframe

Shared Stories

Truthful

Unity

Realization

Seeing others experience

Youth do the production (lighting, sound, set)

Interesting?

The Process

‘National’ / ‘International’

Ensemble work instead of individual character

It’s gone quickly

How would you like to see youth & theatre mix?

Jazz up the Drama Curriculum

Take them out of the theatre, let them stand on the stage, see back stage.

Finance

Arts Council have divided Arts & education

Professional Practitioners in schools could be stage fight workshops – doesn’t always have to be show related workshops- though they are great too!

Performance festivals – everyone likes to have something to aim for!

Theatre terms make it sound boring, by categorizing types of theatre, things begin to sound boring- need to experience it 1st hand

Theatre needs to be brought back to the streets.

Schools do not seem to be exposed to theatre for the sake of seeing good acting, set design etc. but instead ‘because we are doing it in English class’.

What’s missing in youth theatre?  What would you like to make happen?

Youth Theatre map of provision

Lack of diversity & opportunity & access

Progression & pathways for young performers & theatre makers

Sustainability – progression routes

Quality/ standard adhoc…

Communication – Networking between others- seeing other peoples work – professional development/ training

A profile – it isn’t recognized as an art form

Collaborations between different companies

Youth Theatre Festival rather then competition driven forum

A spirit of working together

Bit of a postcode lottery in terms of provision- whole areas with very little provision

Lack of theatre forms – lots of musical theatre but what else? – Not representative of YPs across the breadth of Wales.

What is next for young performers & how do we make it happen?

What is Youth?

Guidance & mentors – 2-way communication what’s out there, more sign posting.

Explore theatre internationally

What is performance?

Exposure to different art forms & transferable skills

Performers in YT but also backstage, designers, costume, stage-managing…

More opportunities for Admin/ Paperwork side of acting- making contracts etc.

Traditional routes  - University / Drama School/ Straight into Profession – Bespoke routes should be encouraged

What’s out there for people in their early twenties?

Some choose to continue to work in theatre as a hobby/major interest but don’t want to pursue as a career.

Why did you get involved in Youth Theatre (if you are involved in Youth Theatre)?

Feeling of commitment and dedication

Escaping but going into an area that is caring supportive, nurturing & transformative.

Gave me something to do, somewhere to fit in

Gave me a sense of belonging, safe & comfortable, somewhere to explore.

Gain exposure

Creates Opportunity

Realising what young people are capable of achieving

Path to self-realization

A place to play out your fears, hopes, frustrations & dreams.

How can we get more people involved in the future?

Listening to young people

Up the profile of youth theatre

To make sure they know what it is

Build relationships with in your community

Good practice

Painting the fence- so much more then performing

Practitioners Recommendations-

Sharing best practice

Communication improved

NTW – assist & support an International Youth Theatre Festival

A network is forged

Possible mapping of provisions – how to access what is available

Possibly one media portal for the arts – signposting

Practitioners practice together – Bis workshop weekend

Need to develop pathways

Look NAYT (England), Jonathan Neeland- Quality Provision

Young people seeing each other’s work & workshops

A meeting with ACW + practitioners to make recommendations + share+ communicate – together a collective voice for youth arts

Pledge for things to be done within

1 WEEK – Database: names/contact details + preferred method of contact

1 MONTH – Get together to plan the workshop, try include at least one new person each to the group in order to at least double the group number.

6 MONTHS – Practitioners to do a shared workshop.

Young People group 1 recommendations

Evenly distribute the theatre resources, experiences around the country – giving everyone a chance

Better advertising of productions, communities, so that you shouldn’t have to seek it out.

Youth seeing other young people performing

A youth theatre community – theatre for all – resources, monologue site, opinions, what’s up & coming in the world of theatre.

Youth festival

More respect for theatre in school and have more excitement surrounding it. How about letting everyone know about other aspects theatre – producing, design, backstage.

Make youth know about the experiences that are possible though theatre – travelling, working with other countries and that there’s so much out there.

Having exciting theatre & professionals to come & talk o youth…learn about working with other people and the careers possible – not just about being famous.

Pledge to do things within

1 WEEK- researching what youth want, what they think- any ideas.   Send letters to schools, government.

1 MONTH – Establish a link between schools & other companies/ youth theatre groups/ professional

6 MONTHS – (Youth) festival DRAMA – People can meet each other.

International companies. Ambassadors.

GROUP 2 recommendations:

More Workshops  - where & when

Free (expensive) workshops

More empty shops projects in Wales

People from youth theatres travelling & introducing it to teenagers

Street Theatre

Apprenticeships

Funding – target more areas, accessibility, application forms made easier, specific social networking

Theatre Trips

Website with information and updates

Professional Q&A actors

Clarification of what is YT by Young people not funders and practitioners.

Pledge of things to do within

A WEEK- Join the national Theatre Wales Community – Youth Arts

1 MONTH -Start a National YT Board so young people can set up events etc.

6 MONTH – Youth Theatre Conference/ Festival

As you can see this is the beginning of a much broader conversation so please add your thoughts.....
