Profile Information

What I do:
Annette Mees is a theatre maker who makes theatre and experiences for a 21st century audience. Using modern communication tools, social media and new developments in technology she creates poetic an theatrical experiences in which the audience is always the hero. The audience bring their ideas, memories and ideals to the table to co-author an experience that is uniquely theirs.

She specialises in directing actors in close proximity and interactive acting, working with writers on unusual dramaturgies and in the integration of technology in theatrical and live events. She uses a uniquely collaborative process to engage cutting edge technologists, writers and artists to deliver a different piece every time.

She is one of the four Runners of Coney, an agency for adventure and play. The Runnes form the artistic core of a large worldwide network of makers. Within Coney she specialises in dramaturgy, creating new narrative forms that are responsive to audiences, directing actors, creating new acting techniques that allow for maximum interaction with he audience and the social aspects of play.

She also co-founded and developed Interludes; a project bringing together five teams consisting of a writer, a technologist and an artist to develop new ways of telling stories. She is the director of the Performance Lab, an acting Lab dedicated to finding novel ways to engage audiences and she also works as an independent artist and director.

Recently she has created work in Shakespeare's Globe, the bar of the ICA, Centre des Arts in Enghuin-les-Bains in France, BAC, the streets of Chinatown, the V&A museum, Metal's new artist residency in Essex, the woods of Camp Bestival, Soho Theatre, public spaces in Soho, at Hide & Seek and Come Out &Play, London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT), an abandoned sentry house in the Dutch countryside and the Science Museum.

She was awarded the WGGB Theatre Encouragement Award 2008 for her work with writers and was also named one of the artists to watch in 2009 by Courvoisier's Future 500. She has a Masters in Theatre Directing from Birkbeck University. She was recently accepted onto a Cultural Leadership Program; Method, a program aimed to develop artists as leaders.
