Profile Information

What I do:
I'm a lighting designer. Most of my work is with theatre, devised-theatre and contemporary dance companies. I'm excited by atmosphere, colour, the dynamic of a piece, what's happening in the rehearsal room, making things, space, riding my bike and exploring. And lots of other things.

Much of my work is made in theatre or studio spaces (and often for touring), but I also design light for projects in unusual spaces (including an empty shop, a courtroom, and a dark woodland) and installation/gallery spaces.

I sometimes work on projects as a collaborating artist. I might be involved with devising, designing, writing and structuring a piece, as part of a group of makers working from, but beyond, their specialist skill-sets.

At present I'm based in Birmingham, and work across the UK. My work has been seen in the UK, Europe, USA, India and China.

Some examples of my recent work:

THE MOON THE MOON, Unlimited Theatre

"The figure of the moon is a ghostly pervasive omnipresence, who[...] thanks to Ben Pacey’s superbly dexterous lighting, fades between unearthly half-presence and concrete reality." - Culturewars

IRIS BRUNETTE, Melanie Wilson

"We find we’ve been effortlessly woven into the thread of this post-apocalyptic patchwork, appearing and disappearing from view thanks to Ben Pacey’s brilliantly conceived lighting.” - Kultureflash

THE INTERNATIONALIST, The Gate

“Ben Pacey, uses the tininess of the Gate to [his] advantage, turning the stage into a beautifully lit box.” - The Sunday Times

RISE, Tom Dale

“The dark, brooding atmosphere is heightened by the space-defining lighting that further locks in the intensity of the performance.” - Three Weeks

Hi Ben, welcome to National Theatre Wales! Weirdly, you might not remember, but we met about 3 years ago in Keswick when you were working at Theatre By The Lake. I think we shared a beer and chatted lights and theatre and sheep. Glad to see you are busy, hope the show at Southwark is going well! x
