- A little more about me:
- I have performed in one way or another since I was five, initially through dance and later as part of a community drama group. I was a big fish in a little pond back then. I knew I wanted bigger things, I wanted to make bigger things, and I wanted to be bigger things. I studied Drama and Theatre Studies at A level and thrived. I loved every minute of it. However, I doubted my ability as an actress and decided to look into some of the more ‘behind the scenes’ jobs. The other half of my college life was dedicated to art, and in particular design. From this I assumed my best path was Set and Costume design; a decision which led to a Theatre Design degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. As you probably know, the course is incredibly intense: they manage to pack an unbelievable amount into three years and I gained a vast and varied knowledge of theatre. Even throughout the course I felt that something was still not sitting quite right, and after graduating I set about trying to work out what it was I wanted to do. In the mean time I started working at the Cardiff Theatrical Services painting sets for some of the biggest shows in the country. The feeling of being part of something big was incredible, even if I wasn't the star.
One day, during a conversation with colleagues, I had an idea for a new show. I had spent so long thinking I was a designer I told myself that I would have to wait for someone else willing to come along and direct/produce such a show. That’s when it clicked. Suddenly everything that had ever worked for me came flooding back and I was propelled into my past. All those times when I was taking the lead in creating performance, being part of a devised piece or playing around with innovative theatre were the times when it all made sense. It fitted. I immediately started talking about my ideas to friends and family, writing plays, making up characters and reading books. Since that point, almost a year ago, I have not stopped. My mind has been a tornado of ideas and creations looking for an outlet.
I have applied for many positions assisting directors but without ‘directing experience’ have yet to achieve anything paid. I have however spent the last four months assisting a director for the Everyman Theatre Festival. Simon West has directed for Everyman for many years, and is also a member of a theatre school for children with his partner Emma-Jayne Parker. This year he is directing Blackadder, and I have been shadowing him every step of the way. I have attended every rehearsal and meeting and have kept quite up to date with my own little diary of what I have learned along the way. It has been completely inspiring and I know without a shadow of a doubt that this is what I am supposed to do. I know I can do this and should be doing this and I know that it will come naturally to me. I don’t want to just ‘block’ scripts; I want to create something new that has never been done before. With my experience of theatre through designing and performing I think I could be making the type of theatre that other people may have not yet thought about, and the contacts and friends I have made while I have been there only inspire me more. I am confident that I could produce some excellent quality productions with these people and have an amazing time at the same time. The only thing I need now is someone with the experience of actually running a production, and getting it off its feet to take me hand and say ‘this is the door, step through it’

Day THREEEEE!!!! NTW TEAM - Y2 Wrap Party
Today everyone got down to business, which meant that we went from sitting and talking about stuff to doing, which being 'creatives' everyone obviously loves. It did mean that the majority of the group didn't see me for most of the day, which I could tell had drastically affected some of the TEAM members.
