What I do:
Performance Storyteller, Writer, Workshop facilitator
A little more about me:
My Storytelling Bio: Storyteller Deb Winter has delighted audiences across Wales and in England with a huge range of shows, from a passionate set about the degradation of the marine environment, through to her quirky ‘Re-fried Fairy Tales’ – Grimm’s classic stories re-imagined for the contemporary audience. Audiences describe her as a compelling storyteller who touches the heart – open, warm, authentic and passionate in her telling and she can evoke both laughter and tears. She is known for nature-based stories that are a ‘call to action’ on environmental protection.
Having won the Bristol StorySlam ‘storyteller of the year’ award (audience vote event) in 2015, Deb was invited back to Bristol story festival annually with three new shows ('Orpheus', 'The Red Shoes','Trysts & Promises') and performed ‘Daughters of the Deep’ in 2018 as a taster for the Storyfest.
Deb has tailored events for a diverse range of clients (Cheltenham Science Festival, Tenby Arts Festival, Priddy Folk, End of the Road, Swansea Fringe, the National Trust; Pembrokeshire Coast, Fforest, West Wales Arts Centre, Transition Bro Gwaun. After co-hosting Tenby Storytelling Cafe with Phil Okwedy, Deb set up the very successful new storytelling-and-music venture, Straeon Gwaun, attracting a growing audience from across North Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion and first-rate storytellers from across Wales.
Deb was awarded one of six commissions across Wales for the 2016 Gwanwyn Festival, funded by Arts Council Wales/Age Cymru, to develop a collaborative piece with the Celtic harp.
A former Environmental Education officer for Greenpeace and volunteer for FoE and BCTV, Deb has created three environmentally-themed shows for the local Transition group: The Magic of Green; the Green Phoenix and All Four Corners, all supported by the Arts Council of Wales through Noson Allan.
Deb has collaborated with a number of musicians including singer Lynne Denman and musicians Ailsa Mair Hughes (cello, voice, psaltery) and Fiona Barrow (violin, harp, guitar and accordion).
Deb has a winning mixture of warmth, high energy, irrepressible humour and a certain something that quivers between originality and downright eccentricity.
Besides performing, Deb runs very popular storytelling, improv and writing workshops.
Location:
Castle Morris, North Pembrokeshire SA62 5UY
Projects I’m working on:
1.A re-working of the story behind Coleridge's "Ancient Mariner" into a storytelling performance, putting the Wandering Albatross centre-stage - central theme is how environmental catastrophe follows on from the disconnect from nature. The show also deals with the disastrous exploitation of the Southern Ocean through commercial whaling. 2. A new version of a Native American Indian story of Nerrivik/Sedna - 'the Guardian of the Seas' -reworking a traditional story to be a warning of climate change, rising sea levels and flooding. 3. An imaginative, experimental piece based on the Mexican La Loba fragment - a passionate call-to-action on climate change and the extinction of so many species.
