Profile Information

What I do:
Jackdaw Theatre
A little more about me:
Jackdaw was formed in 2011 by Amy Clamp, Holly Seager, Ben Karakashian and Bethan Dear. At the time they all lived and worked in London. They have since taken their own individual and successful paths in the arts industries around the UK and beyond.

Jackdaw is now run by Artistic Director Bethan Dear and is based in Machynlleth. Jackdaw is an open collective that works with the local community and professional artists. We employ new artists for each project that we run, create, produce or co-produce.
Location:
Machynlleth
Projects I’m working on:
Bethan is currently developing a solo performance project titled "How To Be Well In A World That Is Sick". Supported by the Arts Council of Wales and The National Lottery, this work is a semi autobiographical exploration of the impact of sexual and gender based violence. The show asks questions about how our culture and society perpetuate this kind of violence and explores the ways in which the wider context of our culture and society impact on our internal landscape as people. The work looks at how important body based, movement and vocal forms of expression are necessary and needed in the process of healing trauma. Including spoken word, storytelling, movement, dance, sound and clowning, this piece combines Bethan's skills as a writer, performer and maker, and is a process of her bringing together some of the experiences which have impacted her the most in life, with a deep desire to connect with and support other people who have survived similar journeys or who are supporting those who have.

As a part of this project she is working in partnership with New Pathways, an organisation based across Wales who offer support to victims and survivors of rape, sexual assault, abuse and sexual violence. She has been working with a focus group of people who have received support from New Pathways to provide me with a space for continued dialogue during the create process. She will share work with them as it's in it's creation process and in turn they will give feedback and insights on how it resonates with them and the ways in which she could add/change/improve or expand it.
