‘The Immateriality of Things’ finds its inspiration from a geological discovery made by Charles Darwin in 1831 in north Wales. As Darwin walked through the mountains of Eryri on a solo field trip he discovered an unusual group of boulders in the glaciated cirque of Cwm Idwal. Darwin concluded that the boulders, called Erratics had migrated on the ice flow some 12,000 years ago. The boulders take their name from the Latin ‘Errare’ meaning to ‘Wander’ and are defined as having a lithology that is different to that which it sits on. Resting in the temporality of a landscape, the Erratics become an archive, a trace of complex imbrications of different time frames. Banal in their appearance, the spectral qualities of the boulders remain free to roam in an inscribed past which returns to haunt the present, anticipating what is yet to come. Jacque Derrida writes of photography’s spectral relation to time as a kind of ghost writing; to take into account the mediums relation to the past as to what haunts and at the same time, the returning revenant or spectre points towards a future. The material element, the photograph, stands in for another material element and it is in this sense the photograph through representation, becomes the object that stands in for something that is not there.
