A little more about me:
Mike is an award winning artist, director and designer, whose work has always bridged media. Known primarily for his intervention and performance works, and for his propositional practices within the form and function of located live art - his work has involved elements as diverse as painting, photography, audio sampling, large scale and multiple projection, short-range and satellite radio broadcast, mobile phones, helicopters, cars, caravans, trains, surveillance CCTV, ice sculpture and drawing.

He co-founded the performance collective Pearson/Brookes with Mike Pearson in 1997, their work together being generally perceived to have pioneered multi-site and located performance practices - most recently co-creating their award winning production of ‘The Persians’ for National Theatre Wales’ inaugural season of 2010, and their acclaimed large scale theatre work ‘Coriolan/us’ for National Theatre Wales in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company and London 2012.

He is currently developing a long term collaborative practice with Spanish artist Rosa Casado, producing live art and gallery works under the umbrella title ‘Some things happen all at once, some things happen more slowly’ - their work together having been widely commissioned and presented across Europe, Asia, Australasia, South America, and the USA.

Other ongoing collaborations include his work with Quarantine, with whom he has collaborated as an associate artist since 2003; Untitled Projects, most recently contributing to the award winning ‘Paul Bright’s Confessions of a Justified Sinner’ and ‘Slope’; and in 2007 he was appointed Research Fellow within Aberystwyth University.

Recent awards include: recipient of the Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales Award 2007; CCG Fellowship, Centro de Arte Torrente Ballester, Ferrol [Spain] 2008; MAPA Residency, Girona [Spain] 2008; Bilbao Eszena Residency, Bilbao [Spain], 2009 and 2010; PACT Zollverein residency award, Essen [Germany] 2012; Salina Art Center residency award, Kansas [USA] 2013; winner of the TMA Best Design Award [UK] 2010, winner of the Wales’ Critics Best Production Award [UK] 2012, and winner of the CATS Best Design Award [UK] 2014.

Projects I’m working on:
Most notably in this context, my long-standing collaboration with Mike Pearson continues…

Current personal projects include the intervention and live art works 'Just a little bit of history repeating', 'What if everything we know is wrong?' and 'Something happening / something happening nearby' - all being realised in collaboration with Rosa Casado.

With Quarantine - we are continuing the development of a quartet of new performance works titled 'Summer', 'Autumn', 'Winter' and 'Spring', which we hope to complete on 2016.

And with Untitled Projects - the recent award winning 'Paul Bright's Confessions of a Justified Sinner' is currently being restaged for this year's Edinburgh Festival...

Coriolan/us at World Stage Design 2013

..before it closes, I just thought I'd post a quick reminder that Simon Banham is currently exhibiting elements of our design work for last summer's Coriolan/us, in the World Stage Design 2013 exhibition, now open at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama - including a full interior model of hangar 858, and my video document combining the live screen and headphone mixes from a single performance...…

Coriolan/us stills

...a set of 50 rehearsal and performance stills from our Coriolan/us have finally been added to my web archive, mainly courtesy of the camera of Simon Banham - all accessible via the 'coriolan/us' text link of archive #2.

screens and headphones

Giving myself a little time and distance to reflect on the realities of our run of Coriolan/us last month, I have been spending some of my days slowly reviewing and combining the continuous camera and headphone feeds that we generated and broadcast live within the work – and which were captured and recorded on the evening of our penultimate performance.

Revisiting the details of these mixes, as they formed and unfolded in real time, I have been consciously avoiding the…

An emptied place

Before more detailed traces and remnants of our Coriolan/us project begin to gather, I thought that I would mark its completion with a quick camera phone image, snapped across that portion of hangar 858 temporarily designated 'rome', a few minutes after being vacated by the 350 of us who had populated it for the duration of our final performance last Saturday.
