RIP Roger Wooster

Very sad to learn that Roger Wooster, has died.Roger was a great contributor to the arts in mid Wales for many years, working tirelessly in Theatre in Education and Community Touring Theatre, including with Theatr Powys and as a CARAD Trustee. Roger was very proud to have set up the Performing Arts Course at Coleg Powys in Newtown, and of his subsequent role as Senior Lecturer at University of Wales, Newport. His published work on TIE, access and inclusion and modern acting are highly regarded…See More

Profile Information

What I do:
Playwright: Screenwriter: Creative Producer: Arts Advocate.

My teachers despaired of me at school. Trying to get me to write more than five (and even then pretty illegible!) lines on any subject was like pulling a Doberman's teeth. Strange but true I then went on write for a living which I've done ever since!

I began my writing career at the Royal Court Theatre where winning the George Devine Award for most promising new playwright changed my life. Since then my stage plays have been performed throughout Britain - from the Royal National Theatre and Belfast Opera House to miner's welfare halls. (The latter during a stint with 7:84 Theatre Company (England).)

Over the years I've also written and developed film and television drama for the BBC and BBC Wales as well as various independent companies. My radio drama has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 & 4 and BBC Radio Wales. A huge chunk of my career was spent writing 227 episodes (I know!) of the Channel 4 drama serial, Brookside, between 1986 and 2003. (It was my drug of choice!) During that time I was a member of the writers' 'team' that created multiple-strand stories for more than 2,400 episodes!! As you might guess I love story and the power of story metaphor in people's lives.

Living in Rhayader in Mid Powys for over twenty years has enabled me to learn how to wield a mean chainsaw as well as giving me the opportunity to help to found the Community Arts and Heritage organisation based there - CARAD - on the back of a large-scale community play in 1994.

Classy actor dies

Actor Herbert Lom, best known for playing Charles Dreyfus in the Pink Panther films, has died aged 95.

Great Comedy Actor and Writer dies

The great Eric Sykes has just passed away.

Stop the clocks, dodge that pane of glass, duck under that plank.

Heaven just got funnier!

Playwright Shelagh Delaney dies

Sad news coming out that one of Britain's most influential women playwrights of the past sixty years has died.

Her well known play A Taste of Honey played on Broadway and in the West End before being made into an award winning film directed by Tony Richardson with wonderful performances from Dora Bryan, Rita Tushingham and Murray Melvin.

The play and film had a tremendous impact and resonance at the time- a beautiful tender story featuring a young woman falling pregnant, being…

Hi Peter,

Since we last met back in November, I've been involved in a research project on performance responding or relating to flooding, which involves a compilation of performance case-studies as well as oral history interviews with people affected by extreme weather.

I'm keen to reference your the play that you wrote on the flooding of the Elan valley as a case study in the write up and wondered whether you have any documentation of the show that you would be willing to share?

In other news, I've been involved in a performance project with women's stories from the CAT oral history archive, and a community playback theatre group, as well as a bit of dance with Mags Ames from Aber uni. All good fun!

I hope you and Cath are well,

Warm wishes,

Rosie

Parklife was the extension of quite a rollercoster summer for me, so the crash landing back to the real world is rather depressing! Back to bills and job hunting! I came across your notes for the Pontardawe show. It's interesting to see the journey Parklife took. Here's to it's next incarnation!
