Profile Information

What I do:
Phillip Zarrilli is Artistic Director of THE LLANARTH GROUP. He works internationally as a director, performer, actor trainer, and performance maker. Most recent productions by THE LLANARTH GROUP include PLAYING THE MAIDS (co-created with Gaitkrash [Ireland], Theatre P’yut [Korea], 2015; TOLD BY THE WIND on tour to Tokyo Theatre Babylon (2013); THE BECKETT PROJECT with performances of HAPPY DAYS and four Beckett shorts on invitation to the Malta Arts Festival (July 2012); THE ECHO CHAMBER (co-created with Kaite O’Reilly, Ian Morgan and Peader Kirk and with performances by Ian Morgan and Phillip Zarrilli (2012). TOLD BY THE WIND (previewed in 2009 at the Evora, Portugal festival, premiered at Chapter Arts Centre 2010, and has toured to Berlin, Chicago, Poland, and other locations in the UK. Zarrilli has developed a unique, internationally recognized approach to training actors/performers in pre-performative psychophysical processes which he regularly teaches in intensive training sessions at the Tyn y parc Studio in West Wales and internationally, such as the Norwegian Theatre Academy and ITI (Singapore). [See his award-winning book, PSYCHOPHYSICAL ACTING, published by Routledge in 2009,winner of the 2010 ATHE Outstanding Book of the Year Award, with DVD ROM by Peter Hulton.] As a director in 2016 he will be directing the world premiere of Kaite O’Reilly’s COSY with performances at the Wales Millennium Centre and on tour. He will also direct Beckett’s FOOTFALLS and PLAY at the National Theatre, Costa Rica. In 2015 he is directing THE WATER STATION at Norland Teatr (Norway). Other recent productions he has directed include: PLAY with Gaitkrash at the Cork Opera House and National Sculpture Factory (Cork, Ireland, 2010, 2012); the critically acclaimed production of Kaite O’Reilly’s THE ALMOND AND THE SEAHORSE (for Sherman Cymru, 2008), a new translation of Sarah Kane's 4:48 PSYCHOSIS (KNUA, Seoul, Korea, 2008), and the Singapore premiere of ATTEMPTS ON HER LIFE (a TTRP production at Esplanade Theatre Studio, 2007).
A little more about me:
Before moving to Wales in 1999, Zarrilli was Director of the Asian-Experimental Theatre Program in Madison, Wisconsin. He lived/trained in South India for seven years in indigenous forms of psychophysical training. He also trained extensively with AC Scott.
Location:
Tyn y parc Studio is located just outside Llanarth near New Quay, in West Wales. This is the home of THE LLANARTH GROUP where small-cale performance are rehearsed, and work-in-progress is shared with the local community.
Projects I’m working on:
Collaboration/exchange with Okamura Yojiro, Artistic Director, AMI Theatre, Tokyo: with support from Wales Arts International, Phillip Zarrilli will travel to Tokyo in November, 2013 for an exchange with Okamura Yojiro. He will be joined by Kaite O'Reilly and Jo Shapland as they share their performance of the co-created work, TOLD BY THE WIND.

A new theatre development collaboration is in planning between THE LLANARTH GROUP, GAITKRASH (Cork, Ireland), and THEATRE P'YUT (Seoul, Korea).
