Karen is a new work by Blast Theory, developed in partnership with National Theatre Wales. Co-commissioned by The Space and 539 Kickstarter backers, Karen has been developed with support from the Mixed Reality Lab at the University of Nottingham and in collaboration with Dr Kelly Page.

Back in 2013 I was given the opportunity to be part of National Theatre Wales and Watershed's Digital Producer's Lab, Wales. Myself and 11 other producers from across the creative industries in Wales were whisked away to Bristol for a week where the aim was to foster digital talent and catalyse production of creative technology projects in Wales. Since then, through the projects I have worked on with National Theatre Wales and the other wonderfully brilliant companies I've worked with I've live-streamed productions through live-streaming sites and social media platforms, I've created digital marketing plans, I've worked on productions involving projection and I've created and populated existing platforms as characters in order to create 'the world/reality' of a theatrical production but, until Karen, I've never worked on a live event/ production which has been lead by digital it's always been the other way round and I'm excited. I'm excited about how the gap will be bridged between the two realities creatively and how audiences will take the jump with us.

Karen started life as an app which has been downloaded more than 10,000 times since launching in April and played by audiences from all over the world including America, Australia and Germany. Now, Karen is planning a secret rendezvous with her biggest fans.

Karen is a one-off immersive live experience, its a cross between gaming and storytelling. It's Karen’s having a big bash for her 40th on 24 October, at a secret location near Cardiff. She’s booked the curry house, a DJ, a singer, the bar will be open and it’s going to be a right laugh. You'll get a three course meal and you'll even get introduced to some of Karen’s dearest friends as she decides about the next big step in her life.

I'm also excited about having the chance to work with Blast Theory. Blast Theory are leading the way for the digital arts. They are "one of the most adventurous artists’ groups using interactive media, creating groundbreaking new forms of performance and interactive art that mixes audiences across the internet, live performance and digital broadcasting." Click here for more information on them. I get up in the morning because of the artists I get to work with because they make me look at the world from a different perspective and Karen is no different. It explores the relationship we have with the digital world and how through our engagement with it and our need to be part of it the level of trust we invest in it.

Tickets are available until Wednesday (14th October 2015) evening and if you've played, you should book your tickets now here so as not to miss out on this exciting event which is crossing the boundaries between digital and theatrical realities. If you haven't but fancy playing the app, you can download it for FREE on the Apple App store and on Google Play Store.

During this June and July I am working with Mess Up The Mess to promote two exciting productions: ‘Walk in Our Shoes’ and ‘Humanequin’, which have been created by young people across South Wales in order to inspire and create change within their communities.

The first is ‘Walk in Our Shoes’. It is an immersive, intimate theatrical experience in which the audiences in Newport experience the daily life of a young carer. The performance is aimed at teachers and other professionals, who work with young carers in order to share with them the stress and anxiety a young carer feels every day and the impact this has on their school life and work.

This week online you can watch the digital stories of 3 young carers. Today, we heard from Lizzie who is 17 (click here to watch her story). Watching and listening to her story I couldn't get over how brave and strong she is, and I have so much admiration for her. At 17 I definitely wasn't as level headed as her! Follow Mess Up the Mess' twitter account so as not to miss out on tomorrow and Friday's digital stories.

Next week is Carer's Week and as part of this we will be Live-Tweeting the first public performance of 'Walk in Our Shoes' at 1:30pm on Monday (8th June) from the Mess Up the Mess' twitter account and using the hashtag: #Walkinourshoes

The young carers from Barnardo’s Cymru Young Carers project in Newport aged 11-18 plus young volunteers from Mess Up The Mess Theatre Company with support from, mental health charity, Mind want to make a difference. Through this project they want to create a lasting legacy in Newport by introducing a young carers card for schools that enables young people to share information about their situation without having to frequently retell their story, which can often lead to anxiety and stress. It will have the contact details for their support worker, who the teacher could then call to find out specific information. After seeing the performance they want schools to sign up to be part of the card scheme.

For me, this is where theatre is most powerful. It gives us a voice. I'm excited to hear the voice of the young carers through their performance and I'm excited to see the changes which come about through 'Walk in Our Shoes'.
The Good Earth - Motherlode - Casting Breakdown - Two highly dynamic actresses required - Paidtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2015-05-18:3152760:BlogPost:2271562015-05-18T14:30:00.000ZSarah Jane Leighhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/SarahJaneLeigh

Chapter II- THE TONGUE EVER TURNS TO THE ACHING TOOTH

by Sonia Antinori

Four elderly ladies living in South Wales, each awarded some kind of recognition of merit, are invited to a popular TV talk show on the day after the European elections. Their discussions on national, linguistic and territorial identity, on community and on the sense of belonging melt down amidst the hope-sapping yak of the television medium. A playlet about modernity’s contradictions.

Chapter VII - OF FAITH AND FAIRY DUST

by Heidrun Kaletsch

The Welsh miners’ strike and the tug-of-war between trade unions and the Thatcher government. A crisis of the productive system gives rise to an open struggle between workers and administrators, set against the question of the identity of UK minorities and of working rights. All this while the press and the other media cast their distorting shadow.

Chapter VIII - NO GUTS, NO GLORY

by Katja von der Ropp
A trade unionist of Irish descent looks for his homeland of choice, between an adventurous past in the merchant navy and fights for the independence of African populations. The moral bequest of a man scarred by a tragic experience of injustice, set in landscapes that betray residues of the British colonialist tradition.

Cardiff University and August 012 have been working with a group of over 65s to explore issues of identity, memory and civic and political engagement, providing the content for the 3 Welsh chapters of an epic, European 12-part play, written by writers from Germany, Poland and Italy. The play offers snapshots of European history from a uniquely personal perspective: Childhood in Nazi occupied Italy, solidarity in contemporary Berlin, dissent in East Germany, the fight against the Mafia, pride and community in the miners’ strikes in Wales, Welsh language activism and much more . . .

A rehearsed reading directed by August 012 Artistic Director, Mathilde López, and performed by actors, Robert Harper, Bethan Morgan and Tom Mumford will be followed by a roundtable discussion entitled “WISE Connections: fostering arts projects between Europe and Wales” and lead by Dr Cristina Marinetti (Lecturer in Translation at Cardiff University) with Dr Katja Krebs (Senior Lecturer in Theatre Studies at Bristol University) and Dr Márta Minier (Lecturer in Drama at the University of South Wales).

I'm sat in a cafe eating the healthiest breakfast I could find (a fry up) and I'm taking time to reflect before the madness of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

I heard about Buddug James Jones before I met her. She was a theatre designer, had finished University, done some successful fringe productions and had ended up back in Wales working for the government. From hearing this, I knew we were going to get on. My life was pretty similar only I was trying to form a career as a producer and I was working in a shop because the welsh government didn't want me as I don't siarad Cymraeg.

The first time I remember meeting her was at a TEAM evaluation party, we were in the same group and I remember us moaning about the same things. We were on the same page.

She told me about Hiraeth and from that initial conversation I wanted to help her make it happen. Her head was screwed on, she had a brilliant laugh and the show she was describing sounded exciting. She captivated me.

Hiraeth is a show created by Jesse Briton, Buddug and Max Mackintosh. It's the story of how she came to make the decision to not carry on her family farm. It's funny because it's from her perspective but it's also poignant because everything in it is true, albeit a little exaggerated.
They came to create the show because they were friends and they wanted to tell this story.

Hiraeth is a devised comedy theatre production which has been built through friendship and truth, and this is what makes it what it is and what has made it easy to produce because it's apparent to all who see it or have it pitched to them and last night is the first time I really realised this.

We are up in Edinburgh thanks to IdeasTap and the Underbelly. We were chosen as one of the four winners of their 2014 Edinburgh award, given a slot at the Underbelly and a little bit of dosh. It was one of the worst pitches I felt I had ever done, they picked apart my budget and we answered their question with awkward answers due to verbal diarrhoea brought on by nerves. We even admitted that a lot of the time we don't have a clue what we're doing. We bumped into one of the panelists last night and we let out how scared we had been at the pitch and how terrible we thought we'd done and to our surprise he said they were impressed with our honesty and how close we were as a team (I'm pretty sure it also had something to do with the welsh cakes we took with us).

I suppose I'm writing this blog post because I want to thank NTW TEAM for creating the opportunity for myself and Bud to meet and for all the support it has given to Hiraeth, and also to give a little hope to anyone reading this who is in the middle of a project and are at the point where they can't see where it's going or how it's going to happen. If it's true and your honest and you love it. It will happen because others will see this and want to be a part of it with you. Keep going and make the work you have to make.

Hiraeth is on at Underbelly Cowgate from now until the 24th of August (except the 13th), we would love to share it with you. We've seen 2 welsh companies already and will see more. If anyone is up there and needs to let off steam, let me know and we'll grab a cuppa.Only 2 more days left to see ROBERTO ZUCCOtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2014-07-18:3152760:BlogPost:2016152014-07-18T13:25:38.000ZSarah Jane Leighhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/SarahJaneLeigh

Mametz Call Out

Hello,

NTW are looking for a non-professional, ensemble cast for our next production Mametz by Owen Sheers, writer of The Passion.

We are looking for 10 male performers (8 who look late teens/early twenties and 2 who are older) and 10 female performers (all ages). Who are able to sing and move and appear in key crowd scenes as part of this unique, outdoors, site-specific production.

Here is some information from Mametz’s Director, Matthew Dunster:

“We have an opportunity for 20 people to get involved with NTW's next production.

Mametz is a large-scale, adventurous production performed in an ancient woodland near Usk, Monmouthshire, and will give audiences a vivid glimpse into life – and death – in the trenches and battlefields of the Somme.

Inspired by Welsh writer Owen Sheers’ poem Mametz Wood, it will draw on written material by the poets who fought in or witnessed one of the war’s bloodiest conflicts - the Battle of Mametz Wood, in which 4,000 of the the 38th (Welsh) Division were killed or wounded.

I want the help of 20 committed, talented members of the community to tell this story.

If you have a genuine interest in being part of this exciting process and like to get involved with acting, dancing or sport, then we'd love to receive an application from you.

You will be valued and welcomed and have the opportunity to go on a journey with, and learn from, a very strong group of professional performers and an outstanding creative team.

It's an important project. It's important to document and commemorate the battle and the losses Wales suffered. It's important to acknowledge the beautiful poetic voices that were found through experiencing this conflict. We'd appreciate your involvement.

Thank you

Matthew Dunster”

This opportunity is unpaid but the rewards of working with such a dynamic creative team are plenty. We will cover reasonable expenses.

The productions are happening in Usk, Monmouthshire and rehearsals will be taking place at a venue TBC in the surrounding area.
