To be a Trustee of an organisation is an exciting and fulfilling role. The most effective Boards are ones, which benefit from individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets. The Board of Trustees of Fio seeks to draw upon the skills and expertise most relevant to the challenges faced by a small producing theatre company with a dynamic, ambitious and socially engaged vision for the future. Therefore we are looking to add to our board of trustees, we currently looking for individuals with backgrounds in the legal and financial sector.

Remuneration: The role of Trustee is not accompanied by any financial remuneration. Travel or any reasonable out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Location: Cardiff

Time commitment: The Board has 4 scheduled meetings per year including an annual board away day. However, due to significant organisational development taking place with an aim to becoming an Arts Portfolio organisation in Wales and opportunities to work in other UK cities, alongside a range of exciting projects in the pipeline, we envisage a busy 2020-21. In addition to the Board meetings it is envisaged that trustees will attend performances and events and represent Fio at local, regional, national or international events as required. Time commitments will therefore vary and a flexible approach is essential.

Swydd Ymddiriedolwr:

Mae bod yn Ymddiriedolwr ar gyfer cyfungorff yn swydd gyffrous a boddhaus. Y Byrddau mwyaf effeithiol yw’r rheiny sy’n cael budd gan unigolion o ystod o gefndiroedd, profiadau a sgiliau amrywiaethol. Mae Bwrdd Ymddiriedolwyr Fio yn ceisio tynnu ar y sgiliau a’r arbennigedd mwyaf perthnasol i’r sialensau a wynebir gan gwmni theatr cynhyrchiol bach gyda gweledigaeth deinamig, uchelgeisiol a chymdeithasol gysylltiedig ar gyfer y dyfodol. Rydyn ni felly’n dymuno i ychwanegu at ein bwrdd o ymddiriedolwyr, ar hyn o bryd yn chwilio am unigolion gyda chefndiroedd o fewn y sector gyfreithiol a chyllidol.

Tâl: Nid oes tâl ynghlwm â swydd Ymddiriedolwr. Bydd unrhyw gostau teithio neu dreuliau personol rhesymol yn cael eu had-dalu.

Lleoliad: Caerdydd

Ymrwymiad Amser: Mae gan y Bwrdd 4 cyfarfod trefnedig bob blwyddyn gan gynnwys diwrnod cymdeithasol blynyddol i’r bwrdd. Serch hynny, oherwydd datblygiad cyfundrefnol sylweddol sy’n digwydd gyda’r bwriad o ddod yn gyfundref Portffolio Celfyddydol yng Nghymru a chyfleoedd i weithio mewn dinasoedd eraill ar draws y DU, ynghyd ag ystod o brosiectau cyffrous ar y gweill, rydyn ni’n rhagweld y bydd 2020-21 yn brysur. Yn ogystal â’r cyfarfodydd Bwrdd rydyn ni’n rhagweld y bydd ymddiriedolwyr yn mynychu perfformiadau a digwyddiadau ac yn cynrychioli Fio mewn digwyddiadau lleol, rhanbarthol, cenedlaethol neu ryngwladol fel y bo’r galw. Bydd ymrwymiadau amser yn amrywio felly ac mae ymagwedd hyblyg yn hanfodol.

We now have a great show which needs to be seen by as many people as possible across Wales and beyond. Our opening night had a powerful response in rural Mid Wales and our sellout show in Newport needed extra seats. The show left people speechless and in tears on both occasions. Friends in Wales, Manchester and further afield, come and see The Island and help us spread the word on social media #Fiotheisland, original cast members have been! A powerful show performed by 2 amazing actors, Wela Mbusi and Joe Shire. Supported by a selfless producing and production team led by Shane Nickels. Trust me you will not be disappointed!

A show about colonial subjugation in a country (Wales) which is both a victim and also a beneficiary of the wider colonial project, means we in Wales can really empathise with the issues of Apartheid South Africa and its lasting legacy. Here are a few comments from audience members:

“…a hugely powerful and moving piece of theatre, so impressively delivered by Joe and Wela as ‘John’ and ‘Winston’; they were giants on the stage that night. It was a privilege to be there; to be made to confront the uncomfortable truth of a tragic human injustice, yet see the courage of the human spirit prevail despite that injustice and all conveyed so movingly by Joe and Wela is an experience that will stay with me for a very, very long time.” Jennifer Owen-Adams, Chair of Powys Dance

"I went to see the opening of The Island @DawnsPowysDance by @wearefio, I saw an absolutely captivating play that kicks you in your solar plexus, makes you laugh & empathic towards characters, Winston played by @WMbusi & John @JosephShire it was brilliant! @abdul_shayek has Vision." Shirley May, Director of Young Identity

Whilst inevitably there is the first day feelings of nervousness- I am also extremely excited. We have an outstanding team of people from our 2 performers, to our creative team and producers, to all of the supportive staff at The Other Room, to the education and engagement team, who will work tirelessly over the next 5 weeks to bring this show to fruition.

We are aware that our show is coinciding with The Young Vic and the JMK winner Roy Alexander Weise putting on this production. This feels me with even more joy and certainty that this was the right show to be staging at this point in time. The relevance and themes explored in the play are just as important today as they were when the play was written in 2009. However this also fills me with sadness and frustration as it clearly shows that progress is slow and some of the issues addressed should not be issues in 2016, yet they still are!

It is important that we use the arts to instigate and engage in conversations about the issues which are prevalent in our local and global communities and this show certainly allows us to do that. However more importantly the art we make needs to instigate some change, however small it may be!

So whether you see it here in Cardiff or you see it in London - please come and see the show!

So since I finished with NTW a few months back I have been busy quietly thinking about how I takeover the world.....................

Only playing, I have been busy working on various projects and thinking of how my career unfolds over the coming few years. There is much to ponder and many opportunities that have arisen and many that have sailed by. However I am keen to understand and investigate my role and place within Arts and Cultural sector. I see myself as a future cultural leader and I have been asking myself many questions as to whether I have the ability and presence to be able to achieve that.

So what have I been up to?

Well I want to tell you about 'Project Fio' being delivered by my company YOCA. ‘Fio’ is latin to belong and is a pilot project that is looking to engage young people from various communities but specifically targeting young people from Black Minority Ethnic backgrounds and also disadvantaged young people in Cardiff. The idea is to demystify what Theatre is and show young people the plethora of opportunities available within the sector. At a time when cuts are being made left, right and centre, the hope is ‘Project Fio’ will engage and enable young people facing ever-increasing barriers in accessing the arts.

Why should these opportunities be more readily available to young people?

As a young person from an underprevliged background I was lucky enough to engage with Theatre through Theatre Royal Stratford East. Coming from a Muslim background didn't make it any easier with family members questioning my decision and not quite understanding what Theatre was providing me. It has taken some time to get my family and friends to understand that through my involvement in Theatre and the Arts, I have gained invaluable transferable skills and confidence. Only recently they have started to appreciate and value my work and the work that theatres do within society. Slowly but surely they have started to come around to the notion and have become more supportive.

Recently a good friend Matthew Xia won the Genesis Foundation theatre award. He said that had he not been involved in theatre he may well have been in prison. Personally a similar statement would be appropriate and although feels a little cliché, theatre certainly provided me with the way out and an alternative option.

Now I find myself in a position where I have great networks and access to some of the leading practitioners and organisations. It feels only right to try and enable others who can relate to my story to get involved and see if theatre can provide them with the opportunities and escape that they need.

A safe place to come and be expressive, a platform where they can find their voice and a stage where they can share their story. ‘Project Fio’ is trying to engage with young people from all walks of life but placing an emphasis on young people from backgrounds not well versed in the world of theatre and those who haven’t the means to access it.

We have identified as many barriers as possible and tried to find solutions in order to be make the project more accessible. Identifying Ramadan starting mid-July has meant that the ‘Project Fio’s’ summer school has moved to the final 3 weeks of the holidays. We are providing travel bursaries and food for the summer school as well as the workshops. Finally we are also keen to speak to parents and guardians to explain the project and enable them to understand what is being provided other then just an opportunity to be a performer. Apparently Islam says that drama is haram, can telling a story be haram?

Wow what a week it has been.

So not sure where I left it all last time round.

Let me start by telling you about the weekend and my trip to the newly refurbished Kubukiza National Theatre to watch some Kabuki. After a 2 hour wait we managed to get some highly sought after tickets and more importantly some seats, to watch 1 Act of some Kabuki. It was an interesting spectacle aesthetically, the crowd reaction was interesting as it did feel similar to that of a pantomime, with the crowd getting excited when favourite characters or actors took the stage.

Monday was the start of rehearsals for Assembly and all was well until I was told one of our actors had to drop out due to damaging his leg and requiring a operation on the Tuesday. So there was a quick scramble to find a replacement. We were fortunate and found a new team member who joined us late Monday afternoon.

It has been interesting as a process and one that has needed quite some thinking through. Many questions and thoughts have arisen and the notion of narratives within Assemblies has been a very interesting idea to work without having a writer to work with. Currently the story for this Assembly event is:

Setting: Research Lab in Tokyo.

Performers: Experts/ Leading Scientists within their field of Economy, Energy, Environment and Efficiency.

Story: A new habitable planet has been discovered. With Earth at tipping point this could prove to be our salvation. However we need to learn from the mistakes we have made on Earth. The experts want to know to set up life on this new planet but in order to do this we need to know where things went wrong here on Earth.

This research is to engage the people of Tokyo about global, national and local issues around the themes.

What problems are there with current economic structures - in this new place what kind of an Economy should we have?

How should energy be generated?

How are we treating our environment? What have we learnt from this?

How should the towns and cities of this place be designed to provide efficient living?

Should be interesting to see what thoughts and ideas come out and how people react. There will be origami, hiaku writing and most importantly debate and discussions.

Get involved and tweet #ntwjapan or message me back about your thoughts on the following questions:

Energy - should we keep using nuclear energy? Why?

Efficiency - one thing big cities can do to be more efficient?

Environment - If the UK suddenly became a tropical island - one positive and one negative.

Economy - Should we have a single global currency?

Wednesday:

British Council Presentation: I met lots of great theatre producers and enthusiasts who came along for a presentation at the British Council offices in Idabashi. This was great as people got an overview of NTW and Assembly and were intrigued with NTW”s ethos and structure. John arrived half way through and helped with the Q&A.

Thursday:

Had a great meeting at NNTT where Assembly was discussed in lot's of detail and I met the designer and stage manager, which was great. After which went for some dinner with my assistant and translator.

Friday:

Went to check out the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. Huge place!!!!

Came across a demonstration against Nuclear Arms outside Parliament buildings as I was a spot of sightseeing. I found myself slap bang in the middle of it!

Saturday:

Got to see a run through of the show and really enjoyed it. Although work to be done it was in a good place. John and the team have done a great job. Then spent the night waiting with Sam Scott from Massive Theatre (who happened to be in Tokyo) for John. His meeting unfortunately didn’t finish till 11:30pm. Sam and me on the other hand had a great night in a lovely Japanese restaurant, writing, drawing and pointing out food to order.

Sunday was quite full on – I went to a fringe theatre show at Komaba Agora theater. Met with producer, Yoko Nishiyama and Kunihiko Tano who delivers workshops and community projects. I also had a quick conversation with the director and one of the actors, which was nice. Coincidentally ran into one of the Assembly performers, she took me to lunch. Although her English wasn’t great and my Japanese still has a way to go, we managed to chat! I then went to Yoyogi park where I saw some interesting but quite random things that they call ‘Costume Play’. A ritual that happens on Sundays, where some people don interesting outfits and come out to play!

These Elvis dudes really having a good time:

I then went with the translator of ‘Opportunity of Efficiency’, Kaku, to East Tokyo (downtown) to a great little paper shop,

Douchi Dou, where they use recycled material to make all of their products. We also went to a community space,

Kosumi Tosho. I also learnt that this was the lower part of Tokyo and man-made, 300-400 years ago.

Monday:

I met with various people and groups including:

A professional facilitator who works for Fujitsu and leads on various businesses in community initiatives – Harada Hirokazu.

Satoko Fujisawa who works for Asahi Beer who have a community garden/ space in Osaka.

Kenta Fujiwara, Satoshi Kawaguchi and Aya Ito who run Next Nevula Extra Support, interesting arts development and business company. They are helping me to make some videos on Thursday around Tokyo.

I spent a lovely Monday evening with some guys who run a community arts project called Arts Link in the North-East of Tokyo. They have some great projects running including looking after and delivering workshops in this amazing old house:

So day three in Tokyo and what a great day it was with John doing a press conference alongside the other international partners/ collaborators making up New National Theatre’s international season - "With – Connecting with World Theatre". The National Theatre of Korea and german playwright, Roland Schimmelpfennig alongside Opportunity of Efficiency, NTW make up the season which sounds exciting and very interesting. I was amazed to hear how old some of the actors were, they really do not look their age- there must be something in the water!

After the press conference I decided to explore a little more and went to search out some cherry blossom which I was assured were amazing. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Finding myself at the Imperial Palace and the National Gardens I wondered around and as all good tourists took a huge number of photos - here is the link to Facebook where I posted them all - Tokyo.

On my way back I met a Japanese woman on the train who was back in Japan after 20 years abroad. Had a great conversation with her about Assembly and am hoping she will come along to the event.

I then went on the hunt for a phone as there has been some difficulty trying to find a sim card for my Iphone, so the recommendation was to rent the whole phone. However I found myself in the international embassy district of town and quickly was quite lost. After meandering around for an hour or so I gave up on this task and decided I would return to it another day. But I did find a really cool shrine in the middle of all the sky scrapers.

I got back on the metro and headed back to the New National Theatre just in time to watch the National Ballet of Japan perform some new contemporary dance alongside an award winning piece. All of the pieces were gorgeous and beautiful. Although I had to fight jet lag throughout, I enjoyed the pieces thoroughly, so a massive thank you to Amy for arranging the tickets. A huge well done to all the dancers and choreographers, Kanamori Jo, Nakamura Megumi and violinist Watanabe Reiko.

After all of that, the evening wasn’t over as I met with John and he took me to a small local Sushi bar where I had my first ever proper Sushi- loved it! We then returned to the apartments I crashed as I had hoped, to wake up revitalized and ready to take on day four! Also I will find a phone today maybe????

So I am writing this blog after realising that no matter how much I toss and turn to get back to sleep, jet lag has got me and my body clock isn't willing to let me be- think tomorrow will be difficult, bring on the coffee!

I arrived on Sunday having left a snowy London Heathrow. It wasn't as warm as I had hoped, didn't have much joy with sim card at the airport and then thought I had taken the wrong train from the airport to the apartments. But actually the train was right and I managed to get to the apartments but this was due to some amazing assistance from a guy I asked for directions from. He not only advised me that I was on the right train, he brought me all the way to where we are staying and wanted to pay for the cab. How often would that happen in the UK?

So although Sunday was officially recovery day, I started doing some detective work. After crashing for a while I decided to have a wonder around the local vicinity to figure out where, what and how.

So far I have seen signs for a community centre, visited local cafes and found a panda chilling in the local restaurant. I also accidentally found the New National Theatre and was very pleased with the fruits of my exploration.

Monday was taken up mainly with meeting the Producing team at New National Theatre and also my assistant, Nobuo and his wife, my translator, Akiko. It was a great meeting and there was much discussed including the familiar Assembly questions of:

What is the space/ world?

Who are the audience?

The rules of this world?

How do we bring a diverse group of people to the theatre show and enable a real sense of discourse?

But some slightly more bespoke questions were posed:

Is the formality and submissive nature that is predominant amongst people here, just a top layer of something more interesting?

Can we be political or create dialogue which may veer into politics? How far can this be pushed?

Will be adding more thoughts as I go about my business and research some of these things and just ponder, question and try to engage people in my research over the coming few days. Also want to get see some cherry blossom – saw John’s pics and they look amazing!

I went to the famous Heichiko dog statue to meet an old friend who has been living in Japan for the last 8/9 years. It was great to see Ade and also that he hadn't changed much, other then just being a fluent Japanese speaker! We went to a Izakaya bar to grab some food. However I think the day and jet lag caught up with me and I felt my bed calling. The upcoming day will be an interesting, as I start to really get about and figure out what this Assembly will become!

Shibuya and it's lights - this picture doesn't do it justice - quite something else!

Two years ago I embarked on a journey from London to be interviewed for the role of Creative Associate at NTW. I returned to the big smoke thinking that I had failed miserably as my interview went quite bad. The 'Wales' section in my future autobiography was to remain a figment of my imagination. However surprisingly I was given a reprieve, which I grabbed with both hands. I arrived at the second interview prepped and ready to give an account of myself which was a proper reflection of me. Finding out that I had been successful sent me over the moon. Couple of firsts for me, joining NTW would be my first full time role within the arts- scary, this was the first time I was living away from East London- kinda scary (home since I was 3) and first time I was more then 3 miles away from daughter for longer then a few weeks- really scary!

My first weekend at work was the 'Passion' in Port Talbot, and what a weekend it was. From sitting in on the rehearsals to making fish finger sandwiches - it was at this point that I realised this wasn't a normal set of people I was going to be working with. So once the dust had settled and I started to get my feet under the table many questions were posed and I needed to get my thinking cap on. Developing what had already been a very successful strand of the company in its inaugural year, 'Assembly' needed some changes but what were these changes? What was the social landscape of Wales? What was NTW’s reach outside of the communities it directly worked within? Clearly one way to find out - a bike ride across Wales to get to know the landscape and indulge in some much needed research. What started as a bit of joke quite rapidly became a reality. The day drew nearer, my nerves started to frail a bit, could I pull out? I thought of excuses and reasons why this wasn’t a good idea. However the adventurer in me knew this would be an amazing experience and I would cycle away better for it. So I went for it! Two weeks of peddle power in order to understand the geography, people and really get a sense of Wales.

Bike Ride Wales

So after an amazing two weeks of learning, meeting and cycling - my brain was full to the rafters with ideas and possibilities of what Assembly could become and how the current model could be developed further, more importantly I realised what it shouldn't become. So with further research and thoughts, the decision was taken to launch the new look 'Assembly'. An 'Assembly' event, which would be democratically elected, suggested by individuals, companies or groups, from four regions across Wales and picked by you the general public and delivered by a team of trained practitioners. I now needed a team - the 'A-Team' (Assembly Team).

Workshops for Assembly Team and the Residency week - Blog & Photos

After this the job of getting the message out for proposals got underway:

Assembly Video

We received a great deal of interest and the voting certainly caught the public imagination and after quite a hectic last few hours, a proposal from Splott & Adamsdown emerged victors for the first democratically elected NTW Assembly.

Assembly 01 - Splott & Adamsdown

The second in West Wales took place in Carmarthen-

Assembly 02 - Carmarthen

The third in Mid Wales in Machynlleth -

Assembly 03 - Machynlleth

The fourth in North Wales in Glynllifon -

Assembly 04 - Parc Glynllifon

Each Assembly dealt with issues ranging from young people and their role within their community to NHS provisions and planned cuts, multi-national companies moving into town to access of local parks and public spaces. We worked with a range of people from across Wales and empowered communities to speak up about pertinent local issues.

After the first four we evaluated and thought about what the next stage might be:

Assembly mid stage evaluation

Out of this evaluation came a sense that we needed to spend longer and provide more resources and really take the debate to the next level - a decision was made to launch the first NTW Super Assembly.

Ideas and proposals came in from all corners of Wales, the public voted their preferred proposals and the winners came in the form of Bangor Youth Group (BYGS) and their proposal to engage in 'why there was such a lack of opportunities for young people in Bangor'. The final event utilised local politicians, social experiments and young people to create the premise of our 'Super Assembly'.

Super Assembly - Video & Photos

So after all that excitement one might wonder what could possibly be next. Well fear not, we have an idea, let's take Assembly on to the international stage - test it out somewhere different, why not Japan?

So here I am feeling ready but quite nervous and extremely excited to export this model, which has been developed through various stages to a point where we are quietly confident that it will cause a stir in the 'land of the rising sun'.

What’s it going to be? Well a performance debate event of course! We want it to take place during our residency in Tokyo at the New National Theatre. Using some of the themes from the play 'Opportunity of Efficiency' - Energy, Efficiency, Economy and Environment, we are aiming to create an event, which creates debate and discourse. We will involve the Welsh public and their views and opinions through short videos created in Wales and have their Japanese counterparts share views also through videos. So keep you eyes and ears locked in and listening as ‘Assembly’ goes global.

Finally that brings me to the fact that this is my final ‘Assembly’ project as Creative Associate and boy has it been 2 years to remember. From a train from Paddington to biking over the 'mountains' in Wales to the streets of Tokyo - can't complain but can certainly say that there is a twinge of sadness. As I pass this on to my successor there is certainly a sense of passing on a project, which has caught the imagination, enabled and empowered all those involved. What will the next stage be? Where will it go next? Watch this space!

But before that keep watching to find out how I get on in Japan - feed me your thoughts about the themes of Energy, Efficiency, Environment and Economy or just see how I get on.

It has ceased to amaze me how close and quickly the voting on our Assembly projects seem to change. However once again it went down to the wire and within the last few days and then hours the winning project changed hands a few times. However we have now got a winner and I want to say a huge well done to proposal 3 and Elen Clampitt who is responsible for it. Huge commiserations to the other 2 proposals especially proposal 5 and crew up in Wrexham - well done on the effort.

Wednesday 14th Nov 10am-8pm (mini-DRIFT day one, including internal sharing)

mini-DRIFT

Participants are encouraged to collaborate with each other, without the goal or pressure of a performance product, but with an open environment for work to be shared. It is a model of process and community building that will provoke and inspire different ways of thinking about your practice and different contexts through which ideas are exchanged – that will include training, performing, nightly sharings of process, feedback, one-one-one sessions and insight into your own practice.

mini-Drift Residency Leaders

Jorge Lopes Ramos is joint artistic director of Zecora Ura (Brazil/UK) and the Hotel Medea trilogy, lecturer at University of East London and has recently completed the cultural leadership program run by Battersea Arts Centre. Jorge develops playful theatrical structures which allow for a participatory, immersive and interactive perspective of the theatrical event. His work with audiences includes performative documentation, artist-led curatorship and Dramaturgy of Participation which is often site-specific, time-specific and audience-specific. As joint leader of the Cardiff mini-DRIFT will be mentoring artists through performance and coaching methods in the fields of audience participation, artistic vision and project management.

As Zecora Ura's joint director and solo artist, Persis-Jade Maravala is committed to an ongoing actor training. She directs, writes and performs in interactive performances, exhibitions and performance lectures that explore the role of the outsider and examine conflict in an intercultural society. Her work provokes meetings of active culture, transcending commonplace social behaviours and liberating the actor from accepted traditions of actor training and theatrical acts by encouraging direct and unpredictable communication between actors, audiences and participants. Her approach as joint leader of the mini-DRIFT in Cardiff will focus on physical and vocal exercises that aim to reconnect the artist to his individual inner life and discover it as a source of creativity. The training is driven by the research of Jerzy Grotowski, and has developed from Asian and Eastern European roots. She leads an intercultural training that does not aim to produce a style, but a continuous process of encounters, transformations and discovery of theatrical dynamics.

Informal Meeting (Tuesday)

5-7 Informal gathering of participants and mini-DRIFT leaders

Participants are invited to articulate their practice, interests and their 'idea/project' which will be used during the mini-DRIFT. This is an opportunity to engage in dynamic dialogue with a number of other artists and their practices, as well as a chance for new collaborations to emerge in preparation for the following day.

Please get in touch with Abdul Shayek for more details and to enquire about booking a place for these workshops/ opportunities. Please note the Drift participants will selected through a shortlisting process.

John Fox and Sue Gill founded and directed the legendary celebratory arts company WELFARE STATE INTERNATIONAL ( 1968-2006 )

www.welfare-state.org Over the decades they invented prototypes of socially engaged theatre such as lantern parades, site specific fire shows and community carnival operas, many of which have infiltrated mainstream culture. Since archiving WSI on April Fools Day 2006, with their new company DEAD GOOD GUIDES www.deadgoodguides.com their work has gone in new directions. From their Beach House a wooden self built home on stilts on the west shore of Morecambe Bay they have worked with marine biologists and botanists to research the ecology of their immediate environment. In their "Weather Station" project they have explored perception and performance, ceremonies for rites of passage and the nature of art and its connection to everyday living. In their workshop THE NATURE OF CELEBRATION Sue and John will expand on their radical philosophy and with participants facilitate celebratory models of engaged practice. This will be a simple and direct hands on antidote to the excesses of commodity culture and spectacle.

The Assembly in its second year, became a series of bespoke, democratically-elected events which took in four areas of Wales (north, south, west and mid). Proposals for Assembles were invited from all communities and groups who had a local issue they wanted to explore, with the winning proposals chosen through online voting by the general public. Examples of themes in recent Assemblies include the use of a local park, the proposed opening of a new supermarket, and cuts to local NHS mental health provision.

As the company prepares to launch its third year of work, it is inviting proposals for the first ever national SuperAssembly. Applications from companies, individuals, organisations, charities, campaigns, or anyone with an idea for a one-off Assembly they’d like to create, anywhere in Wales, are invited by Monday 29th October 2012. Proposals must be relevant to the applicants’ local community, but could have a national, or international, resonance.

This October, National Theatre Wales and the Dutch rural theatre company PeerGrouP are returning to Rhayader for the third stage of their research and development project, Rrrrriot.

This will be lead artist Henry J. Alles’ second visit to Rhayader. Last autumn, he stayed in the village for the second phase of the project and became a big fan of the town. You may have seen him playing drums and guitar in one of the town’s pubs, climbing mountains, working in the Lion Royal Hotel and enjoying a Sunday roast on the corner of Rhayader's cross roads. Henry spent his time investigating how he could become part of the local community.

Summing up his last, month-long, visit to Rhayader, Henry writes; “Here it is about water, flowing water and power - electricity and political power, rules and overregulation, local strengths and local powerlessness, the extremely friendly character of the people, loads of energy to play games, check on each other and the graving to act crazily on Saturday night. This is where I would love to make a play. It will be about the people, the water and some health and safety regulations. Because that last one really has gone to far. Somebody has to say something about it.”

Henry’s last visit finished with his organising a performance event for 30 people in the old school community centre, which he called a Shimli. The Shimli consisted of lots of food and drink plus sharings of his and other people’s talents.

This year, Henry and his team will be staying in Rhayader from the 7th of October. Their visit will culminate in two performances (Rrrrriot) on the 19th and 20th of October and an after-show event (Rrrrroast) on the 21st of October. Tickets for the performances will cost £3 and will be on sale through Carad. All money raised will be donated to local causes.

Rrrriot will be about a man in a woman’s dress in rural Wales at a festive event that turns into quite a riot. The man tells everybody what they really need to do; grow pigs, go to London and bring in new blood, eat porridge, dress up every Saturday night, steal the electric power from the water, even poach. He rides the wooden horse down to the river and makes the big jump into it. The river where kids are the keys of paradise (according to the inscription in the park). Paradise Rhayader, Paradise Waterfall.

The show is being created through collaborations between both locals and professionals. Quite a few people in Rhayader are already involved in the production, showing their talents as part of the band, as actors, cooks, stagehands, and in many more roles. If you’d like to part of the project, please join our Facebook group or get in contact with Alan or Kate Samuel.

If you see Henry or any other Rioters around Rhayader, please feel free to say hello to them and tell them a story or two about the town. We hope you will join us at one of the performances and the after-show event.

Rehearsals are underway in west Wales for Assembly 02 on the 4th of May 2012 and now Assembly 03, mid Wales, requires your online votes to decide how we proceed. We also need fresh proposals from you for Assembly 04 taking place in North Wales, so get thinking and bring us to your town to get that conversation going.

As with the previous three, we’re asking local people, companies and groups to suggest project ideas, from which three will be shortlisted. The shortlisted ideas will then go through a two-week online public voting period, and the idea that receives the most votes will then be delivered. Abdul Shayek, National Theatre Wales’ Creative Associate, will then start the month-long development process, with three of the six Assembly performers and three production staff, culminating in a five-day intensive rehearsal period leading to a one-day event.

National Theatre Wales can offer great support to help you realize your idea, including:

a one-week intensive rehearsal period leading to the event;

three trained performers/artists (Assembly Performers Team);

a director;

a production team consisting of a Production Manager, Stage Manager and a technician; and

a small production budget

We want you to send in ideas for a project you have in mind, that highlights local issues and aims to create some debate. We are looking for ideas could take place in unexpected local spaces. Below is a mock-application to get you thinking:

Mock proposal:

Local hotel/pub is keen to preserve local wildlife and natural beauty surrounding it. However, there is an oil refinery nearby, and there are concerns around the impact it is having on the local environment.

The hotel/pub wants the Assembly to create an event that will highlight the issues and facilitate a conversation on how both can co-exist.

Local resources they can offer include a lighthouse, their hotel, access to the open fields surrounding the area and a local group who deliver ghost tours.

The proposal for ideas needs to take place in North Wales.

Assembly 03 needs your votes - we are now into voting for Assembly 03 - Mid Wales & we want your votes to tell us which project we should deliver. Currently it is a close one to call as Proposal 6 & 7 go head to head and have a only a few votes separating the two - get online and get your vote registered.
