Where: Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff: Media Point Room

I've been at NTW for 2 years now, and have become increasingly involved in the access performances we plan and programme, out of personal interest as well as being part of communications with our audience.

Our Christmas show, The Insatiable, Inflatable Candylion is the most recent show we programmed, offering captioning, audio description and our first ever Relaxed Performance. These all went really well, and were used by more people than we expected, but we want to do more.

We took a trip to Birmingham Hippodrome to get some ideas for Candylion, following their brilliant work on relaxed performances. Spending the day with them, we learnt how their approach to access is not only organisation wide, but also community wide, and they reach out to so many different people, professionals, organisations and groups in order to make their programme of work accessible to as many people as possible.

So, to try and do things better and talk to more people, Jacob Gough (Production Manager), Fiona Curtis (Production Co-Ordinator) and I are setting up an Access Forum - a quarterly meet up for anyone with an interest in making the arts in general more accessible to more people.

An Access Forum is something the Hippodrome do on a quarterly basis, and it draws in many arts and non-arts based professional, freelancers, audience members and organisations. They had some lovely families on their Forum who came from a perspective of someone who doesn't work in the arts or have arts knowledge in particular, and they found that really helpful when programming their access performances. They also had someone from the Guide dog Association, who was really interesting and helpful, and could contribute ideas none of us arts professionals would even think of.

We're really keen to get some joined up thinking in the arts in Wales about access, share best practise and help each other to develop much better programmes of work for everyone, as well as finding ways to reach more people. This isn't an NTW led thing necessarily, NTW are supporting and facilitating and offering the framework, but we want this to be considered like a What Next? sort of event, and hopefully get them going all over Wales - This is just a starting point.

It's something we're personally really interested in, and are sure there are plenty of people who would like to come along and talk about access and what we can all do.

It is open to anyone, and we welcome as many people from as many different walks of life as possible. We'll pull together an agenda and share nearer the time.

“A little boy from Merthyr always, always” is a phrase well known to many a person from that town that sits at the top of the Taff valley which people sometimes refer to as the capital of The Valleys. The phrase comes from a famous son of the town Dr Joseph Parry, composer of one of the greatest love songs the world has ever known, Myfanwy.
Parry like myself left the town as a teenager but as his famous phrase so succinctly sums up once you have the town in your heart and in your veins it stays with you always, no matter where you travel far and wide.

To some the town has less than a glamorous reputation, often exacerbated by negative media representations. Because of these negative images some might think that eternally carrying the town around with you in your bones might seem like some sort of proverbial ancient mariner’s albatross permanently weighing you down around your neck. Nothing could be further from the truth. I look at it as a resource that I always have with me that I can always reach for in my pocket if and when I need it, it is like the Swiss army knife of identities. Why?? Because it always offers you a grounding on what is important in life. I remember another local bard Idris Davies in his poem “The Day We Walked to Merthyr Tydfil” describing coming over the mountain from Rhymney on a cold winter’s night and looking down spellbound on the shimmering, twinkling facets of the house lights of that jewel of a town that is Merthyr. I know that view well and it is one that comes to mind when remembering the natural beauty that surrounds this town.

Another resource that always stays with you when you are from the town is the wit and wisdom of its people, which will always bring you back to the importance of family, community and friends. That spirit of the local people is steeped and is moulded by the proud history of this unique town. From the Martyring of Tydfil through the kindling of the nascent industrial revolution to that hell on earth that were the local iron works that led to the internationally renowned Merthyr Risings, the boxing, boozing and brawling all associated with the town in the 19th and 20th Century reflect the strife and struggle that gives Merthyr people resilience, resolve and mettle that they use to rise to the challenges that life throws at us all.

So there we have it, what Merthyr means to this little boy who will be forever from the town, the people and the panache of the place is in my bones and in my blood and in my heart and soul. Sometimes those who have seen media representations of the town, such as those recently presented by “Skint”, say to me “Well you’ve done well considering you come from such a deprived background” I tell them I don’t feel I had a deprived upbringing at all and quite the opposite but the town gave me a particular resilience and bolshiness that I have always found has served me well to make my way in the world and proud of it I am.

That all changed when I went to Edinburgh for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and it was worth every minute and every hour of sleep lost!

Coming from a dance background, I feel like I'm always catching up with the world of theatre and sometimes one or two steps behind what's being created. After seeing 16 shows in under 3 days, I have definitely caught up and had my eyes opened to the incredible work that is out there being made by incredibly talented people.

So, I just wanted to share with you a couple of my highlights from the few days I spent up there and some top tips if you're heading there for the last week

First up, my number one show was definitely Last Christmas by Dirty Protest, written by Matthew Bulgo and performed by Sion Pritchard. I am always wary of one man shows and whether they will keep my attention for the duration, but I honestly couldn't drag my eyes away and I thought of nothing else the entire time. The beautiful story was perfectly paced, and I felt as though I was experiencing every emotion with him. I started thinking of how his situation would affect me, and how i felt about my family and that was it - I was an emotional wreck. This is a must see.

Not just for fans of dance, Wonders of the Universe was fantastic. Highly skilled contemporary dance set the perfect sounds of Professor Brian Cox - you cannot go wrong. It made me laugh and smile, while keeping me interested and transfixed by the technique of the three male dancers. I really hope this tours Wales at least because it really was beautiful and fun at the same time.

Another beautiful Welsh piece was Hiraeth. Buddug James Jones, you are hysterical and your story is beautiful. As an acute sufferer of Hiraeth, i could completely relate to the emotions and thoughts associated with having to leave home to pursue your dreams, but judging by the laughter and applause from the packed audience, you didn't have to be Welsh to get it. Max Mackintosh is also brilliant at playing his array of characters, and piece makes you leave with a giant smile on your face. Another must see for me!

This may not be for everyone, but Trainspotting by In Yer Face Theatre was an intense, shocking experience that really got to me. Think the film, but in a really small room and you are in it with a big group of strangers. It's dark. It smells. There are really angry young men and women screaming in your face off their heads on drugs. It felt so real and like I was stuck in this angry world full of drug abuse and filth. It was simply brilliant.

A final top tip, and one that creeped up on me, is The Future for Beginners from LiveArtShow. I don't feel my words would do it justice, but it was beautiful. From the performances to the breathtaking singing, this is a show that just blows you away. You really need to see it to understand what I mean by it's an opera-theatre piece that you fall i love with, and coming from someone who isn't really up on opera as an art form, it really was a surprise.

All in all, my trip to Edinburgh was incredible, and I am so proud of all the Welsh theatre I saw and all the theatre I experienced. If any of the work I saw tours in the coming year, I will definitely be going along to see it again.

Head to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe website to find more details on all of the above plus booking details: https://www.edfringe.com/

We want to encourage a response from our audiences about their points of view on how arts and culture impacts on individuals and society. This could be in a multitude of different ways including health, wellbeing, education, social mobility, citizenship, economic development, town centre regeneration, community cohesion and inclusion.

There's no right or wrong answer, we'd just like to get your views.

Ahmed Hassan
Arts is a part of everyday life, everybody does art in one form or another, the only difference is some do it consciously and others do it unconsciously. If I speak about how it has affected my community, it has opened the eyes of the youth and adults in my community. Coming from Somaliland/Somalia where art is loved, cherished and it's a major part if our culture.

As a whole people didn't think we could continue it here in the UK, so by us being supported by NTW and doing a national show, it has shown our community that we can continue doing art any where we are in the world and express our feelings through art. Adding to my earlier point the youth believed subjects like drama and poetry are for privileged people, most of the youth in Butetown who are British born Somali/Yemeni,Jamaican. Their parents have a culture that's different to the child's, the child has a mixture of cultures such as youth culture, hip hop culture, but not so much the culture of their parents or their place of birth.

They need to be supported with their ways, but also guided with how their parents lived and about youth like them that have become successful in Britain. Role models is definitely a key factor. But since De Gabay a lot of teenagers are choosing subjects such as drama and creative writing. How it has affected me as an individual is it's put me in contact with people I'd never speak to and I'm sure they'd never speak to me. So through art it's breaking barriers and widening the community from local to the wider community.

As a youngster I saw drama as a free lesson understanding arts has shown me how ignorant I was. We are doing a lot if artistic development throughout the community such as schools, youth clubs and community centres.

Arts is a form of expression, it inspires, empowers and connects individuals. Everyone has a light shining bright within them, people from every nation in the world, it's through arts and culture that we as individuals get to understand and appreciate people from all backgrounds. As we all shine as individuals within the arts and world we collectively make an impact within the communities and the people around us.

Hassan Panero

There are many ways arts & culture can relate to influence the population and vice versa. Personalities are built on a set of blocks that we all pickup whilst we travel along the routes of life. Creativity is finding innovative ways of using trash/treasures and amongst all the items people would normally walk past, it is the misunderstood among us that makes outcasts, but art bridges that gap that makes it special if the right attention is directed towards them, we all have unique ways of thinking, so it is the expression that we value as individual's.To create a platform for people to join is the commonalities we require as artists

John Williams

I think arts and culture are such an integral part of a society because it's a foremost of identity. Each different culture has a different form of expression which distinguishes them from everyone else, makes them individual from other societies, which in turn makes them a part of a wider group.

As odd as it sounds it creates individuality for a society, it's what can make them different to everyone else and can also make people feel like they are included as part of a group. Nobody ever has to feel alone in the arts because there will always be someone else out there who might just like the same weird things. The arts is also vital in respect to expression. This may seem like an obvious answer but if you look closely the arts is a form of expression for people who would never associate themselves with the arts. Protest I feel is a good example, a form of expression which can take a variety of forms but each has a link to the arts and performance.

Each in there own way is trying to make a difference, trying to bring about a change and simply through people expressing themselves and their views. Again we can go back to the inclusion I previously mentioned via protesting you immediately include yourself into a group of individuals you may never have spoken to before or even considered yourselves similar.

Via the arts you have expressed yourself for change and helped create and be involved with a new society and this is just the beginning there are endless other possibilities that the arts have, you just have to study it deep enough.

Terry Chinn

I grew up in a small town in South Wales that never had a professional theatre culture (or a cinema for many years,) but sustained an opera company, three talented musical theatre groups and two little theatres .

People LOVED working on performances, LOVED the rehearsing, LOVED the socialising , without this participation in the town it is almost unimaginable to think how miserable the town would be .

I don't think there is a quick fix if you want to build a creative and social economy in the remoter parts of Wales. Creative apprenticeships may be part of the answer, more artist led spaces in the empty shop units would help, raising our game by working with visiting artists, and having the open door of NTW TEAM is all going to build up our networks all over Wales.

Kelly Jones

The arts are incredibly important in helping society develop easily transferable interpersonal skills. The arts communicates with a wide range of ethnicities and diverse communities and often tackles the taboo. It helps give people a voice and often the most inspirational Art we see has come from working with a community and finding our their story, it is only then we see the true impact Art has on a society. It brings a togetherness, a buzz and a new found motivation to explore.

Laura Thomas

I believe that arts and culture has the potential to have very positive impacts on individuals and communities. If arts companies/artists make a conscious decision to make a difference to society and create opportunities for them to get involved then there are endless results as to how this can benefit people. On the other hand, if companies/artists are making work for people who are already involved in such activity then how will their work ever be able to grow and gain new ideas?

I currently work with a dance and drama company who make it their number one aim to involve communities and build on their talents. The effects I have seen on the people I teach are proof that arts and culture can have a positive impact on people. I have witnessed improved confidence, self-belief and a new awareness of personal achievements amongst the attendants of the company’s classes. Many of the classes also focus on social, mental and physical wellbeing and I feel that some people benefit from learning this through arts, in a creative and fun sense, rather than traditional teaching/schooling etc. I think that arts projects can be moulded to suit any type of social group/person and encourage healthy and positive actions.

Christina Handke

"You can't just give someone a creativity injection. You have to create an environment for curiosity and a way to encourage people and get the best out of them" - Ken Robinson

What is art? What is culture? These questions have been lingering around dinner tables, university halls, coffee shops, books and centuries of people creating, making and sharing.

Whereas it is safe to say that, as relevant as these questions are, the ultimate and absolute answers to these questions will probably not be found today, not in this message, there is something else that can be done: Let us remember the last time art, whatever this means to us, moved us, changed us, challenged us. Let us remember how art, whatever this means to us, can bring together communities and strangers like it did at the last street festival around the corner of your house.

Let us remember the last time reading a book, a poem, a story allowed you to escape, to recharge your battery. Remember how looking at a painting, how drawing, how watching children draw has made you feel. How a film moved you and made you want to become a better person, a different person. How a song made you dance and forget the world around you. How a stand-up comedian made you laugh until your stomach hurt and a spoken word poet made you cry. How a piece of theatre made you angry and how listening to the first essay your daughter ever wrote at school made you feel filled with love.

Today, let us not try and define art, culture, creativity, let us rather think about how it has made our lives a little better, how it brought you together with strangers, what it can do for your health, your community, how it can make you curious, educate you, heal you, your children, your friends and think about how, right now, for yourself and everyone around you, for everyone who needs it, you could create an environment that will allow art and culture and creativity to help you and them lead the best lives you all could possibly lead.

Buddug James Jones

The arts have a vital role to play within society. Growing up in a rural community in West Wales, the arts was what tied the whole community and what sculpted the town's calendar. Be it the town's 'eisteddfod' or Christmas celebrations, we always had something to look forward to and it would tie all the generations together. It's clear that Wales's rural areas use the arts as a way to tie communities together and improve individuals wellbeing and to keep the town 'alive'. This is something I see many theatre companies aim to achieve through their community engagement work.

Whilst I don't think he fought at Mametz Wood, my Great Grandfather Stephen Jones fought in WWI at Gallipoli and was taken prisoner at some point. We know that he fought with the South Wales Borderers, who did feature at the Battle of Mametz Wood.

Unfortunately, we don't have his records, as it is believed they were destroyed during the Blitz when an enormous amount of WWI records were lost. I would love to know more about him, as sadly he died when my grandmother was very young and she doesn't remember much about his service history.

All we have is a letter that was sent from the King thanking him for his service and his medals. Things we are very grateful for. Both the Imperial War Museum in London and Brecon War Museum have been very helpful in finding out information about our family, and I'm hoping to go and read the regiment’s diary soon in Brecon just to get a better understanding of where they went and what he went through.

Since hearing about Mametz and starting work on the project, I have been both nervous and excited about the production. Excited because the entire thing sounds incredible and the writing by Owen Sheers is just beautiful, but nervous because I feel as though I am going to find out exactly what my Grandfather experienced as a young man in the trenches.

However it is important to know, important to remember, and important to acknowledge the great sacrifices made by so many during the Great War.

I'm proud to say Stephen Jones fought for his country and even prouder to say he was my Great Grandfather.

'National Theatre Wales’ mission could be seen as to make theatre in non-conventional spaces. The driving force behind this is to take theatre to places where people do not have ready access to theatre.

Underlying this is an ambition to make low impact theatre – our impact should be on people memories , not on their environment. We sometimes liken our visits to a footprint in the grass; the grass will recover quickly but the footprint lingers in the memory.'

Starting a new job (and moving house in the same week (just in case I haven't drummed it into you enough) can be intimidating, especially for a drama queen such as me... but I have survived it and i am actually smiling at the end!

What has made this week so exciting and made the new job shock manageable is hearing from the NTW team about the productions I am going to get to be a part of. From RAW Material to Mametz and onwards, honestly, this is going to be such a good year for me and for National Theatre Wales.

For starters, RAW MATERIAL will be the first production i experience as a staff member. I've never been to Laugharne, and from what my Grampa has just told me about the place, it is somewhere you just have to experience.

Mametz chimes with me on a personal level, having recently discovered that my Great Grandfather fought in WWI as a very young man in some of the most brutal battles, including the blood bath at Gallipoli. Reading the Mametz Wood poem, hearing the production plans, and brushing up on my history - both family and general- this evening with my grandfather has really made me think that there must be so many other people out there with similar family history and stories to share. I'll be blogging about my family soon, and i hope some of you out there will share your stories too.

There is definitely a lot to learn over the coming months, and it's going to be quite a while before I feel fully comfortable given the huge life changes I've made, but I am on the right track and working with a fantastic bunch of people for sure.

So here's to the beginning of something amazing!
