About the show

National Theatre Wales and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru in association with S4C
Creator & Director Marc Rees
Royal Opera House Stores, Abercwmboi, Aberdare

Wales' two national theatre companies - National Theatre Wales and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru - team up for the very first time, with one of the country's leading artists, Marc Rees, and broadcaster S4C to create a visual and storytelling feast.

Performed in English, Welsh and Spanish, {150} will bring to life key moments in the story of the 150 Welsh men, women and children who settled in Patagonia in 1865, and the lives of their descendants today.

This multi-platform production, combining live performance in Wales with a specially commissioned film from Patagonia, will be staged in the Royal Opera House stores near Aberdare - a vast building not normally open to the public, close to the homes of many of the original settlers.

A little about the production;

Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage is a new, touring, verbatim play that tells the story of two Welsh names bruised, but not beaten, by media speculation; Gareth “Alfie” Thomas, 100 caps for Wales, once its captain, now the world’s most prominent gay sportsman; and his hometown, Bridgend.

Working with Alfie himself, and young people in Bridgend, two of the UK’s most exciting theatre companies - National Theatre Wales and Out of Joint - have teamed up to tell a great Welsh story about sport, politics, secrets, life and learning to be yourself.

I am thrilled to be back in Cardiff and promoting such an exciting and important piece of theatre!

Among the soldiers who took part were several key Welsh and English war poets, including Robert Graves, David Jones, Siegfried Sassoon and Llewelyn Wyn Griffith, and Sheers’ own great, great uncle, William Gwyn Davies.

About Silly Kings...

Once upon a time in a kingdom far, far away lived a princess, four crazy knights, an angry fairy, a dragon (of sorts) and a very Silly King. The award-winning National Theatre Wales roll into the magical grounds of Cardiff Castle for a Christmas feast of family fun, adapted from the Fairy Tales of Monty Python’s Terry Jones.

Fly away with a cast of extraordinary characters and madcap musicians, telling tall tales from a kingdom east of the moon and west of the sun.

Last week, I was lucky enough to be sent off to Berlin to meet documentary theatre Director Hans-Werner Kroesinger, and watch his new play, Failed States One: Somalia. This is the first in the series of Failed States with Hebbel Am Ufer.

I met Hans-Werner in the café of HAU1 after a mad dash from the airport and an extremely expensive taxi ride; it was safe to say I stuck to the tube after this. It was really interesting to find out more about his work on Somalia in caparison to NTW’s work on De Gabay. He tackles political issues on the history and journey of Somalia, mainly focusing on its capital, Mogadishu.

The piece began with the audience all together staring at a projection of the ocean on a corrugated large metal fence. We are then split into three groups, taken to different parts of the theatre and treated in a specific way. My group was treated like tourists; we were taken to the highest circle, looking down at the projection and told about Italian Somalia, pirates and the exportation of bananas. Sounds of typical holiday music accompanied this. We were finally brought together on stage, behind the corrugated fence.

The third section was much more theatrical and physical than the other two. On arrival there were sounds of symbols creating a very subdued atmosphere. The outline of Somalia had been created on a fence hanging from the rigs. Again there was a projection of the sea to the left of the stage; this would later project a live drawing of a scene from the invasion of US troops in Mogadishu, 1994. A round ‘news’ table sat underneath the projection as the actors transformed from politicians, to newsreaders, to Somalian pirates, to American soldiers. The corrugated fence is finally lifted to reveal a catwalk over the seats we originally sat in. The actors sway droning a pirate song combined with sounds of the automated symbols as the lights go down.

Hans-Werner Kroesinger’s work;

He undergoes an extensive yearlong research process where he reads hundreds and hundreds of documents

His actors will spend 4 weeks dissecting the selected documents

He often splits his audiences into three groups who will undergo three different experiences. They will then come together at the end for the final section of the performance. The theory behind this is for the audience to perceive this last part in different ways depending on the journey they had just been on

His work contains heavy factual text throughout, so make sure you are ready to work

He is one of the leading directors in Documentary Theatre

It was a real pleasure to meet Hans-Werner Kroesinger and I hope he is able to see De Gabay in March. If you ever get the opportunity to see his work, I highly recommend it.

My highlights

I ate cake and celebrated with the hilariously brilliant The Harri-Parris - The Leaving Do which I sadly missed when it was in Cardiff and am so glad I got to see it in Edinburgh.

On Tuesday morning I had sophisticated intentions to see Shakespeare For Breakfast. Unfortunately I chose the only day they were having a break and so ended up going to a PEEP show from Natural Shocks. I saw the first of three 20 minute performances entitled Sexlife with Welsh actor Ifan Meredith. The piece was fantastic, it was sensitive and touching with a hint of humour, I recommend anyone going to the fringe this year to have a peep.

Gary Owen's Cancer Time was done brilliantly by TEAM member Emily Rees and Alex Bull who make up the company Instant Reaction. The Stage deemed it a must see and I totally agree.

Tucked In's production of The Golden Cowpat was a fun relief. If your going to the fringe with children then this is definitely well worth a visit, or even if you just want an easy fun and high energy performance with a bit of a sing song make your way to the Pleasance Courtyard to hang out with Farmer Hector.

The gem for me has to be Razing Eddie from Horizon Arts. Brilliantly acted by such a young cast, especially Aiden Rose who plays 'Billy big balls', it had me laughing one second and on the verge of tears the next.

...and of course Dating George Orwell with Kelly Jones in her beautiful metallic pink dress and sports bra.

Thats it from me but make sure you follow Sarah Leigh and Kelly Jones throughout the festival.

So this is not only my first day at Edinburgh fringe this year but my first time ever and I am very excited to be here. After a long journey sat too close to the toilet I finally arrived into the city at 4.30pm pumped and ready to see some theatre. All my belongings got thrown into my room and I fled to The White Horse to find Kelly Jones in her pink metallic dress, clutching a cardboard cut out of George Orwell.

We caught up on her show Dating George Orwell and made an impulse ticket purchase for The Lonely One by Dotted Line Theatre. Entering the theatre space we were welcomed by four actors beside four miniature white houses. The piece tells a story based on an extract from Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury through narration, fantastic lighting and puppetry. The performances where superb and I was truly inspired to experiment more with lighting and shadows. The only criticism I have is that I didn’t feel the puppetry always added to the story line and at times felt a little disjointed.

After this we felt a Nando’s was totally necessary followed by a Ukulele showdown – I wish Mondays were always like this.

Approaching 10.30pm we still wanted more and so headed over to The Space to see an 11pm showing of Daughters Of Lot by Brain Melt Consortium an American company founded in 2010. If you are male and go to see this show you may feel a little hard done by. Made up of five actresses the piece looks at how women are taught to be women. If you blush easily then this performance is probably not for you.

Now it’s off to bed ready to hit the theatre scene hard tomorrow and see what wonderful things Wales has brought to the fringe this year.

I wanna prove that I can be insightful, but I don't know where to start,
I've got this new urge to be responsive, take in the times, create its art
I was writing all night, I tried, but my words kept sketching a tart.
What a bloody laugh, I already knew this world had no heart...

The past is the past and it douses the landfill,
But they are messages unmasked, by antique oak table and candle.
The actor is only as good as his sequel...
Till he proves himself, trust me there are equals,
Our statuses defined by the wealth of our people,
And right now we are at the beginning,
This is the prequel
There is more to be done, this land still holds evil,
This voice is just my own, and on its own it is feeble.
We are nothing but what we are trying to be...

In dark times growing old is seeming less and less appealing,
A new world encompassing all the lovely hate we are feeling.
Oh the feeling, feels like we're healing, knowledge is an assuring doctor,
But it’s like we muster the talk, then trip on the walk,
Get embarrassed, slip away fast and flustered.
Leaving dust over this picture, a cape for captain mistrust
Whose in a rush to make unjust fears, blunt,
But even the sun has to rise from its slum
Like the meeting of two lakes, two lakes into a river one.
Our worlds are separate...
But neither ones in front

Is it right because half the world appears to be doing it,
Or is half the world doing it because it is right?
What a gift to hold no regret, so in death peace is found in perfect plight,
It seems we have to sacrifice ourselves these days, to feel any sort of right,
All the good men have done it, Ghandi...Socrates...even Jesus Christ
We fight too...well I do
Usually laced with frustration drenched over booze
I think I'm going to...I’m going to spew...
Sacrifice my kebab, my soul, my chips for a gin or two.
I wouldn't victimise my body for you,
That must be where this so called ‘enlightenment’ could come in use
Living under concrete slabs, the heaviness should be something we've grown used to...

Yesterday was my first day in my new role as The Promoter for National Theatre Wales’ 17th production: A Provincial Life. What a way to start a new job. A 5am rise, gallons of coffee and a trip to London to see the dynamic set design lay out and meet the wonderful cast for their first read through together.

Beginning with an inviting presentation from Alison Chitty we saw all of her inspiring, elegant set designs and research into the fascinating world of Chekhov 1890’s. Full of earthy, deep colours and a simplistically stunning backdrop the piece is set to be visually beautiful.

We were then invited to listen in on the cast’s first read through. I was amazed that this was their first time with their scripts as a full cast. For a simple read through it was full of energy and emotion, you could feel the anticipation in the room as the cast were gripping their seats to keep themselves down, dying to get up and get their teeth stuck into such amazing characters.

Brimming with political issues relevant to today, along side a poignant heart felt story line, A Provincial Life is not to be missed and I can’t wait to see it come to life!

Keep up to date #ntw17
Word4Wordtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2011-09-18:3152760:BlogPost:852162011-09-18T11:36:54.000ZAnna Poolehttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/AnnaLouisePoole

Thursday 15th of September saw the second Word4Word event and the first to be held by NTWteam. A night devoted to celebrating the importance of words and the variety of forms in which they are delivered. Originally to be held at CAI a whirlwind of panic set in when their refurbishment was put forward and we only had two days to find a new venue. Thankfully Milgi’s stepped in and the yurt was ours for the night.

After comically carrying heavy benches in non-manual labour tiny dresses down a flight of stairs, Natalie and I finally settled and looked on at our venue with its twinkling lights and laid back atmosphere. Eagar poets, spoken word artists and writer/actors filled up Milgi’s yurt thick and fast ready to get up on the mic. Everyone was sat in the yurt raring to go, but there was one person missing, our fantastic headline act Patrick Jones. Panic once again set in and Natalie ran around Milgi’s searching high and low. Thankfully his smiley face peaks round the door right on time and we are ready to proceed with the night. It all runs smoothly thanks to our fantastic MC, Brent Morgan and his perfectly placed plugs.

Scratch That Itch, 28th September, Monkey Bar, Swansea!!!

We saw so many fantastic interpretations to the theme flight, plus additional pieces equally as inspiring and entertaining. The audience spilled out the door, with people huddling together to listen in around the yurt’s shell, me being one of them. After the interval we had a great performance from our guest musicians Boo and Buster followed by the next 8 word artists. Next came the judging. Our three judges gathered secretly behind the yurt and had the difficult task of only choosing three prize-winners and our next headline act. Natalie and I of course listened in, merrily sipping on mojito’s.

After much deliberation the decision was made and the three were chosen, congratulations to Clayton Emmanuel for his creative use of language, Maeve Scullion for her entertaining performance and an extra congratulation to Betty Lane for her imaginative response to the theme and being our next headline act.

To end the night we listened to the highly anticipated words of published poet Patrick Jones. If you haven't read anything by him before I highly recommend you do.

We had such a fantastic night and were over the moon to see so many people there. Keep your eyes peeled for the next event set to be held in Novemeber. We look forward to seeing Betty Lane’s readings and hope to see familiar faces and even more.

It is from these difficulties that I have come to see the most interesting of sequences. The original script for A Sunday Roast wouldn't even recognize what it has become. With more added movement than I had originally planned the creation of A Sunday Roast has become quite the learning curve in terms of experimentation. With my associate Natalie Stone's Hello Mrs Silverstone in the final stages of development as well we are excited for Saturday 2nd July to come around.
