My TEAM Journey

One of the problems (and also the joys) of being a TEAM member is that the concept of TEAM is very hard to 'pitch' or describe to another person. TEAM is a fantastic thing - and as many readers will know I can enthuse at length - but a strangers next question will often be: 'So, what is TEAM?' And then I'm stumped. It is so many different things to so many different and diverse people - and as Chair of TEAM Panel, I feel that it is my job to champion and celebrate this. But in…
My TEAM Journey

One of the problems (and also the joys) of being a TEAM member is that the concept of TEAM is very hard to 'pitch' or describe to another person. TEAM is a fantastic thing - and as many readers will know I can enthuse at length - but a strangers next question will often be: 'So, what is TEAM?' And then I'm stumped. It is so many different things to so many different and diverse people - and as Chair of TEAM Panel, I feel that it is my job to champion and celebrate this. But in the spirit of answering, 'So what is TEAM'? I wanted to add my TEAM journey to this series of blog posts.

My first connection will TEAM was online through the group on Community. There was listed a whole host of exciting events - all of which I wanted to go along to. I remember attending Word4Word, a performance poetry event and sitting in the audience itching to do my thing. A little while later I was asked to contribute a short play to Kelly Jones' new writing event Stories of the Streets. From that moment I was hooked and continued to attend events, talks and training.

This went on for quite a number of years until in 2015 Kelly invited me to co-produce Stories of the Streets with her. This brought my focus firmly back to TEAM and after producing a successful event and feeling the enjoyment of being 'active' again rather than an audience, I began to participate more - blogging for the NTW site, running the Twitter account for a day and generally making a (nice) nuisance of myself.

Then the opportunity came to apply to be on TEAM Panel. I wanted to be part of this very much. It felt like a chance to help shape TEAM for myself and help to keep it in good health. I was delighted to be asked to be on the Panel and spent a very happy heart getting to grips with TEAM from the inside and learning how much Devinda and Rhoda do to keep the show on the road. TEAM has so many tributaries and branches - it can often be really difficult to keep track!

But still I wanted more. When the role of Chair of TEAM Panel was created I thought hard about whether I wanted to apply. What would I be able to bring to the role? I decided that TEAM had given me so much - opportunities, confidence, friendships and creative collaborators. It had had - and continues to have - both a direct and somewhat separate influence on my professional practice. I was very pleased to be offered the role as Chair as it have given me a valuable opportunity to give something back.

So far this year has shown me the true diversity and breadth of TEAM. I'm no nearer to answering the question of what TEAM is and can only share my personal story. However, I hope that seen in the context of all the other posts it illuminates a little of what TEAM could be for you...Critical Chinwag Review - Light Waves Dark Skiestag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2016-12-08:3152760:BlogPost:2607362016-12-08T10:13:24.000ZTom Wentworthhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/TomWentworth
The play is centred around the idea of light. Light in the extreme (such as the stars), light in the everyday (such a torch or lights in the home) and light in the minutiae (light from screens such as the iPad that I'm using to write this.) Told through the eyes of one family, who have lost a child it examines grief in a poignant and dramatic way.

Light Waves Dark Skies has a non-linear narrative which at first I found highly unsettling. I was unsure where we were in time as we jumped to different characters perspectives and settings at a quick pace. Even as a self professed hardened theatre nut I found this hard to follow but then once I became invested in the emotional narrative the piece settled down, appeared to find its feet and, as a consequence, so did I.

This has much to do with the skill of the cast - Morgan Thomas plays a father on the very edges of life (and reality). Again, he very much settled into the this role and became more subtle, nuanced and emotionally powerful throughout, with an excellent childlike quality, whilst Catherine Dyson played a lecturer struggling to find meaning her old life, softening the character throughout. This meant that both became extremely well rounded towards the end. Gwawr Loader played a journalist who was both inside and outside the family with a great sense of warmth but also 'otherness', added to by being the only Welsh speaking character in the play who develops a special bond with the boy who's voice we hear throughout.

Special mention must go to Paul Burgess who designed the set and created the wonderful animations which are a true highlight in the production. They wash over you and bring the boy - and therefore the acute loss - totally to life and into the present which adds enormous power to the production. The set itself is highly adaptable, at times looking almost like beach driftwood, at others a contemporary home environment where light comes from unexpected places.

One of the other main attractions of the play is that it expects the audience to do some work. We are by no means given all the answers through the production which made for some lively discussion afterwards at our Critical Chinwag. I do hope that the piece is given chance to have a further life - it's full of interesting thoughts, ideas and questions which I know will continue to fascinate and entertain audiences.Hello from the Chair of TEAM Paneltag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2016-11-07:3152760:BlogPost:2595262016-11-07T13:10:38.000ZTom Wentworthhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/TomWentworth

Hello!

Welcome to my first blog (of many, I hope!) as Chair of TEAM Panel.

TEAM Panel is a group of TEAM members - from all sorts of artistic disciplines and a diverse range of backgrounds - who together help to shape the way that TEAM is run and how it plays its part within National Theatre Wales. It's very exciting to be part of such an energetic and enthusiastic group of individuals who all very much enjoy being part of TEAM.

I am a playwright and have been a TEAM member since the beginning and have loved all the interesting people and fascinating events that I've attended because of it. For TEAM I also co-produce (with my fellow TEAM Panel member playwright Kelly Jones) Stories of the Streets. I have sat on TEAM Panel for the last year and have loved the experience. Therefore, it is a huge privilege for me to be the inaugural Chair of TEAM Panel.

Through this exciting new role I hope to help to strengthen the links between TEAM and National Theatre Wales as a company, but for the most part my role will be to ensure that Panel approaches its very important tasks - including how TEAM finances are spent; what the objectives for the next year should be and how we increase diversity - in the most professional and efficient way possible.

On top of all that, we as Panel members are guaranteed to have a really fun and exciting year with lots of events and exciting opportunities for TEAM members. Perhaps you have an event that you'd like to let Panel know about then contact the really brilliant TEAM Assistant Rhoda Lane at rhodalane@nationaltheatrewales.org

If you do attend a TEAM event - I really hope to see you there!

Also, if you're a TEAM member and want to play a bigger part in the community then do look out for your chance to join TEAM Panel. They'll be posted on the TEAM page so keep your eyes peeled and do apply to join us - it's lots of fun and very rewarding.

Light Waves Dark Skies is a new work by We Made This, exploring the beauty and power of light and water, and our place in the universe amongst the stars.

Two parents pack up their lives and drive away from the roaring sea that stole their child. To escape the memories that water stirs, they flee inland and look to the night sky, seeking solace in the darkness. But with every salty tear they shed, the sea calls them back. They can’t escape.

Two parents trying to cope by starting again; but as memories come flooding back, emotions swell and relationships get caught in the undertow.

Doesn't that sound intriguing? I'm really excited to see the work and discuss it with a few likeminded souls.

There's more on the show here: www.wemadethis.org.uk

We’ll be going to the performance at Chapter Arts Centre on 30th November 2016 at 8pm.

I’m really pleased to be hosting this Chinwag - it's my first as host so please be gentle with me! (I'll be wearing my TEAM hoodie so I'll be easy to spot after the performance.)

So... What's the deal?

In return for a FREE ticket and a post show drink, Critical Chinwag participants agree to meet in the Chapter bar after the performance and have an informal chinwag about the production. After that we ask that you tweet and/or blog about the experience and continue the discussion here on the NTW Community website page no later than two days after the performance.

You need to be a TEAM member to apply for a ticket, so if you haven’t already done so set up a profile on NTW Community here: http://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/

To book your seat email: team@nationaltheatrewales.org

We only have a small number of tickets for this show so it’s first-come, first-served. The deadline is Friday 28th November 2016.

If you’ve been to a Critical Chinwag recently, perhaps you’d like to encourage a friend or two who haven’t been along before to apply for tickets? It’s relaxed, informal & a great way to see some theatre for FREE!

Hope to see you there!
I was delighted to co-produce my second Stories of the Streets event for TEAM at the Angel Hotel on 28th January 2016. Here's five of the lessons that I personally learned during the process in no particular order.

I was delighted to co-produce my second Stories of the Streets event for TEAM at the Angel Hotel on 28th January 2016. Here's five of the lessons that I personally learned during the process in no particular order.

1. NEW WRITING IS NOT DEAD - Over 100 people attended the event on a wet Thursday in January to see five new short plays by emerging (and in some cases totally new) playwrights. It was brilliant to see how audiences responded to the different worlds presented to them in our quick fire format and this reminded me that story and narrative are truly king. A good story and engaging characters will trump an innovate staging but a bit of 'razzle dazzle' at a Scratch night (thank you to our director Catherine!) doesn't half help...

2. TIME FLIES WHEN YOU'RE HAVING FUN - With only two hours to rehearse each piece we were under serious pressure. Again huge thanks must go Catherine, the director and also Emily the stage manager who kept us on schedule as much as possible whilst creating a comfortable atmosphere in which people felt free to try things out. The actors of course were marvellous and adaptable, constantly changing they way they worked. It is truly amazing that so much can be achieved in such a short amount of time.

3. TEA (AND COFFEE) KEEP YOUR PRODUCTION ON TRACK - Always have a steady supply of hot beverages in the rehearsal room, they oil the wheels of production (along with biscuits and chocolate of course but I'm keep quiet about those.) Seriously though, giving actors sufficient break, especially when moving between scripts, roles and sometimes whole different worlds requires sustenance.

4. THE BUDGET WILL WORK OUT (JUST!) - Sometimes this can seem like the world's most impossible task. How an earth will it stretch but somehow by calling in favours, promising to do good turns for others or simply being upfront with people, in general you can often secure what you need even on the tightest of budgets.

5. ACCESSIBLE PERFORMANCES ARE EASIER THAN YOU THINK - Making an accessible piece might seem like the world's biggest challenge but in actual fact it just takes a bit of organisation and forethought. OK so for this Stories of the Streets we went a bit mad and made it a key element of the evening which proved itself to be a very exciting experiment, but you don't have to; captioning, for example just requires a projector and slides. It can be as simple and cost effective as you want it to be but it does give you a USP and opens your event up to a whole new audience who otherwise might not have access

I really enjoyed creating the event and can't wait (fingers crossed!) to do more!CALL OUT - STORIES OF THE STREETS - BLOGGER - PAIDtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2016-01-05:3152760:BlogPost:2417632016-01-05T16:00:00.000ZTom Wentworthhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/TomWentworth
To kick start Stories of the Streets for 2016, we are proud to have partnered with Disability Arts Cymru.
To accompany the plays and production process we would like to commission a blogger to write a series of blog posts, which will appear on National Theatre Wales community and, where appropriate, #atDAC - the Disability Arts Cymru. The posts will cover the creation of the event, as well as interacting on official channels of social media and the National Theatre Wales community. This is an exciting opportunity to gain blogging skills and will act as a valuable showcase for any artist looking for experience of working online.

The fee for this role will be £150. The successful applicant will need to be available for 2 days of rehearsals (26th and 27th January) for 4 hours per day and the day of the performance (28th January).
We would like to actively encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds.
