"I have one more story from Paris. A fun one. About a Rose, an unsinkable ship, and a freezing Nazi warehouse.

During the second week of the climate talks, I met the dynamic performance art duo, Tom Payne and Tobias Alexander Edward Manderson-Galvin – i.e. DOPPELGANGSTER – and sassy, sacrilegious Irish artist Rachel Helena Walsh, their resident Doppel-co-conspirator. They are funny. They told me about their upcoming performance: a new interpretation of James Cameron’s TITANIC. Très intèressant. And with the group tagline “a cultural response to climate change, forced migration and globalization,” how could I stay away?"

Doppelgangster's TITANIC seeks to be politically and culturally responsive and uses an in ear listening/speaking technique that enables the performers to work with a new text each time the show is staged. The script is primarily constructed by drawing upon the screenplay for James Cameron's 1997 Hollywood tearjerker; as well as fragments from other contemporary and historical sources, including social media reporting of global events associated with climate change and migration, and historical accounts of the sinking of the Titanic as they featured in the national press in 1912.

Toby and I are interested in what happens when these various elements come together in front of an audience, and also what meanings are produced when TITANIC is performed in politically charged places where the spoken word and stage pictures take on added significance. This was very much the case when we performed the show recently in Paris as part of ArtCOP21. In that context, the story of the Titanic was not only a powerful metaphor for climate change and the hubris of the global north, but it also spoke to the recent tragic events in Paris, the state of national emergency in France and institutional undermining of freedom of speech during the COP.

Before going to Paris, Doppelgangster's TITANIC was commissioned for development by Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, and in November 2015 Doppelgangster presented a run of shows in a shipping container outside the venue as part EXPERIMENTICA15. This is when we first worked with the wonderful Rachel Helena Walsh who came with us to Paris in December to reprise the role of Rose! You can read about her experience on her NTW blog.

We are very grateful to the Chapter team for helping us to develop the performance technically; to the very talented Australian musician Jules 'Crazy Legs' Pascoe, who wrote an original score for the piece; and to Jorge Lizalde and Warren Orchard, for their photographic work.

Doppelgangster's TITANIC at Experimentica15. Image: Warren Orchard. Left Tom Payne, Right Tobias Manderson-Galvin

After working on the show in Cardiff, we were funded by Wales Arts International to take TITANIC to Paris, where we adapted it for presentation inside La Generale, an old power substation that was used as a Nazi boot factory during the Second World War. This unique arts space is located close to the sites of the recent "Terror Attacks" and not far from where climate protestors were clashing with police during the COP. Working in this environment was a challenging and sobering experience and one in which I was reminded of the potency and immediacy of live performance as a means to engage with difficult and sometimes very uncomfortable issues.

"It's a pensive time to be in Paris but it's evident that

Working collaboratively we plan to make what we are calling a 'Water Map' - a year of artistic activity exploring water in all its forms. This Water Map will be divided into four seasons: Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. It will take place between September 2015 and August 2016.

We are inviting artists to submit proposals for work that might take place during the year and this event hopefully gave them an idea of some of the things that might be possible.

The day was broken into four parts:

1) Introductions: A confluence of artists
2) Hydrocitizenship themes: Water, Participation, Citizenship
3) Cymerau: Creating a Water Map in Borth and Tal-y-bont
4) Group Work: Imagining creative responses

By the end of the day the gathered artists had generated some really interesting ideas and hopefully made connections with one another that they will follow up later. As a team, we made a lot of discoveries about the different ways that artists work with and approach 'participation'. I think it would be good to follow up this event with some one to one conversations with the artists involved in order to get a better sense of what they think about this term within the context of their work. It would be interesting to develop a shared local language.

Two questions occur to me:

1) In what ways are local artists working with 'participation'?
2) How are local artists working with water?

Later I will put up further posts about some of the conversations that we had during the day.

But for now, here are some pictures - taken by Sara Penrhyn Jones.

On 22nd March 2015, artists connected to Borth, Tal-y-bont and the surrounding area are invited to attend a one day event at the Centre for Alternative Technology. Places are limited to 40 and booking is essential.

The aims of this event are:

- to introduce Hydrocitizenship and the Cymerau project to artists living and working in and around Borth and Tal-y-bont.

- to provide artists with the opportunity to share their views on anything related to the project themes (eg. water, community, arts participation).

- to share some of the findings from our early conversations with local community members with the intention of generating ideas and identifying avenues of interest.

- to introduce artists to our planned year of activity - The Cymerau Water Map - and to provide them with necessary information to support any creative proposals that they may then choose to submit individually or collaboratively in order to access funds of between £250 and £6,000 per season (see our Water Map page for more details).

The deadline for stage one applications is midnight Monday April 13th. We recommend attending the day event at the Centre for Alternative Technology although this is not essential.
Do you have an interesting story about water?tag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2014-12-16:3152760:BlogPost:2123792014-12-16T21:06:44.000ZDr Tom Paynehttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/tompayne

Two places that you may have seen in the news a lot in recent years due to storms, floods and high tides. Other projects are taking place in the Lee Valley (London), Shipley (Yorkshire) and Bristol. In each instance there are unique water related issues that teams of artists and researchers are aiming to engage with. At the same time, each team is mindful that water means a lot of different things to different people. History, play, memory, family, community, industry, a sense of place and connectivity or separation are all associated with water. So while we are concerned with big themes like climate change, we are interested in the small issues too!

We're just beginning to undertake some creative cultural mapping in our area by engaging a small group of artists, performance makers, and storytellers - each of whom has expertise in working with individuals and community groups. Next week - 7pm 16th December - storyteller Peter Stephenson will be leading a water themed storytelling event at the Friendship (public house) in Borth. This will be streamed live on the internet. Links to follow. The visual artist Jude Macklin will be running a series of 'water walks' along the river Leri in January 2015 and performer Frances Stoakley will be gathering oral histories in March 2015 by employing an exciting photographic method. More details of all of these to follow in separate posts. Other exciting artists will feature too as the project begins to grow over the course of the next twelve months. We are currently working up towards a Cymerau launch event on World Water Day 22nd March 2015. Please get in touch if you would like to be involved.

We would really like to make connections with other artists that are involved in innovative creative practices to do with water - specifically ones that might be described in one way or another as participatory (although this covers pretty much all art if you think about it). We are interested in making connections, facilitating new work and collaborating.

One way that you can connect with us is by joining our group here on the NTW community. Click here. You can also participate or follow what is going on across the UK (in this project and many others to do with water) by joining Hydrocitizens. This is a new online community for artists, researchers and others interested in creative approaches to water and related issues. Its a small but very exciting community whose members include artists and researchers of all kinds from around the UK and internationally. I will write another blog about this another time. For now click here to take a look yourself. Alternatively you can email me at tsp06@aber.ac.uk.

At the recent 'relation and participation' symposium in Aberystwyth, NTW artistic director John McGrath spoke about a new paradigm through which to explore the opening year of National Theatre Wales. 'Commitment'.
Commitment rather than location? In addition to location? If we begin to think about theatre and the theatre of NTW specifically through this paradigm then what might that mean?
Commitment rather than location? In addition to location? If we begin to think about theatre and the theatre of NTW specifically through this paradigm then what might that mean?

It might refer to the commitment by NTW to be innovative, engaged and international. It may refer to the ongoing commitment to specific communities in which or out of which theatre is made; this raises questions about what this commitment might be and how it might be constituted and understood in practice.

In some ways this commitment might be a fitting subject for audience research particularly in light of community projects which have historically come and gone from communities never to return, this commitment might quite simply take the form of going back or, in the context of the symposiums themes, maintaining the relations with the participants. NTW are clear about this aim and perhaps it will be through dialogue with these communities in the coming months that NTW might begin to articulate, demonstrate and develop this commitment. Possibly through further projects or by developing stronger links with NTW team members. Commitment might be the paradigm through which we understand what is to come rather than what has been and gone.
It was somehow fitting that John's talk was preceded by a video of an interview with Jacob Gough in which he spoke about working as a production manager in Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank. He spoke of the murder of 'Freedom Theatre' director Juliano Mer Khamis who was murdered on Tuesday 4th April 2011. He talked about post-traumatic stress amongst many of the inhabitants of the refugee camp; the anger that young people feel at having witnessed family members and friends being murdered. He talked about the threat to his own life and the threat to the lives of his colleagues.

John's talk and the video of Jacob have stuck with me for the last week. Relation, participation, location and commitment... there is a conversation to be had...Jacob Gough and Freedom Theatretag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2011-05-09:3152760:BlogPost:552122011-05-09T09:59:08.000ZDr Tom Paynehttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/tompayne
