Dear Community

Following the outpouring of #MeToo stories from people who have experienced sexual harassment and abuses of power in the creative industries, Re-Live with support from Sherman Theatre will curate a bilingual event in which stories on this subject are heard for the first time in Wales.

The aim of the bilingual event is to provide an opportunity for these stories to be heard by an audience followed by a discussion on how we work together to bring about change in the creative industries in Wales.

The stories will have all names, sensitive information and identifying details redacted, ensuring confidentiality and removing legal risk. The stories will be read by actors to an audience in the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff.

To share your story anonymously with Re-Live:

If you work or study in the creative industries in Wales and have experienced sexual harassment or any abuse of power in your working life, you are invited to share your story. We welcome stories from anyone of any age, gender or sexuality.

We are aware this might be the first time you’ve considered sharing your story and we deeply appreciate the courage it takes.

We assure you that your story will be anonymous and treated with respect. We will not know your name, or your email or IP address. We will not be able to respond individually.

The stories will have all names, sensitive information and identifying details redacted, ensuring confidentiality and removing legal risk. The purpose of the event is not to ‘name and shame’ anyone, the aim is for the stories to be heard and to provide an opportunity for future change to be discussed.

Your story can be as long or as short as you want it to be. We cannot guarantee that every story will be shared live, but we do reassure you that every story will be read and will influence how this discussion moves forward in Wales. By submitting your story, you are giving your permission for your story to be read out at this event.

Re-Live has created an online form where you can anonymously share your story in English or Welsh here

2016, 100 years on from "the war to end all wars" and we still haven't found a way to live without war.

We believe that until we do, we need to create opportunities for people carrying the wounds of war (including the invisible, mental scars) to be supported. Research has shown that a lot of military veterans and their families feel isolated and don't connect with their community as much as they once did. The good news is that singing in a choir has been proven to boost mood, reduce loneliness and even reduce your risk of heart disease!

Re-Live have just launched the Coming Home Choir at Chapter on Friday mornings 11-1. We are looking for more members from the Cardiff community.

This is the starting point of a long term creative project with People Affected by Conflict. We are looking for community choir members who can be sensitive to the fact that some of the veterans are living with post-traumatic stress and are able to make a commitment to Friday mornings. No previous experience of singing required. Our choir lead Pauline Down has a wonderful ability to bring out the best in all voices!

The choir will form part of several performances including an R&D intimate performance end of May 2016 and a large scale theatre production exploring People Affected by Conflict in 2017.

We are holding an Open taster session on Friday March 18th at 12pm at Chapter, Market Rd, Canton.
We are exploring the possibilities of remembering, recovering and letting go.

We are looking for artists to contribute to this process as part of a development week, Jan 25-29 and potentially after this point as we work towards a performance for April 2016. The veterans we're working with talk about how difficult it is to express and contain "the unspeakable". They have also described feeling like "a shell of a man".We are interested in how a movement artist, puppeteer or perhaps someone we haven't thought of could work with us to explore this.

if you are interested please get in touch

Memoria is happening at Chapter this Thurs,Fri,Sat.Re-Live have spent the past few months with an amazing group of people exploring their reality of living with dementia. We've reflected together on memory, fear of change, fear of losing the ones we love, fear of losing ourselves. Two of our cast, Patrick and Karen are only 50 and are diagnosed with dementia. They know the road ahead, they know those precious memories and capacities will one day be gone. Their courage in wanting to share this stuff with an audience is inspiring.

In rehearsals we've heard stories of lost keys, lost cars, at times, lost hope. A need has been voiced. A need for guidance, strength and support from each other, from society, from the professionals and policy makers who shape our nation’s services. This voice is what you will hear in Memoria. You will also discover that dementia can be funny, awkwardly, inappropriately funny but funny all the same.

All 3 shows are being live streamed around the world which we're REALLY excited about it. It's still pretty rare for smaller companies like us to live stream and the Arts Council are looking at this as a case study. Come along to the live show, help us make it work, and be part of a global audience for the night.

A third of babies born in 2013 in the UK will live till 100. The "babyboomers" who are now reaching old age are living longer than any generation ever has. There is an island in Japan where life expectancy is 120. We were fascinated to discover that a lot of 65 year olds are now experiencing a mid life crisis. There is no roadmap for how anyone should behave now that 70 is no longer old and we may still have decades of living to do..

age will be performed by ten dynamic and daring older people who are creating that roadmap. They are the pioneers of aging, they are creating the art of growing old.

age is the result of a month long, sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking exploration of their thoughts, feelings and experiences of what it's like to grow old in 2013.

This show is giving us a chance to express that as you age all your emotions, desires, hopes stay with you. For me, life is getting better and better. I'm happier at 70 than I ever was at 30"

Gutsy, passionate, irreverent, this is a show that might just make you want to grow old! Our oldest performer is 86 and still flying around the world on a regular basis. To quote a line from Max, aged 70, "there are only 168 hours in a week and every one of them is precious". Use one of them next Fri or Sat and come and hang out with our elders. They are the future.

For us the process has been extraordinary and the moment of hearing those stories shared with an audience was really something. The group didn't want to take a bow at the end, but they stood there on that stage and had standing ovations 2 nights running. I stood on the side of the stage and watched, wondering what that truly felt like for them, after so many dark nights of feeling alone with their pain and thinking that society didn't care, to see this crowd of strangers applauding them on their feet and baring witness to their stories.

We're all now pretty exhausted but also excited by the response to the show. And wondering where we go from here...

We've got a week to go till Abandoned Brothers opens at Chapter. At the moment it feels about as scary as theatre can get. We're creating documentary theatre. There is no safety barrier of fiction. This is real-life and the emotions our performers are going through are raw and painful. Today one of our performers re-enacted the moment he pleaded with a psychiatrist to help him as he was scared of going home and what he might do. These men are haunted by post-traumatic stress disorder, haunted by the images and sounds and smells of war. And their wives and children and aunties and mothers are picking up the pieces. "He dies in my arms every night" one woman said to us this week of her husband who still has nightmares of fighting in Northern Ireland 30 years on.

So, the fear for us as directors. We have men onstage who are suffering from PTSD one of the symptoms of which is memory loss(!), we also have women onstage telling what it's like for them, we have high levels of emotion, we have no script as people are telling their own lives, we have a live musician, a film-maker, an audience...

would anyone be interested in reviewing this show? We've often shied away from reviews because our work is real-life and how do you review someone's life, but we'd be really interested in getting an outside view on this show.

We are creating a show with a group of war veterans and their family members. It's a roller coaster. The stories we are hearing range from the terrifying to the ridiculous. American and British commanders squabbling in the Gulf desert, fear and paranoia on the streets of Northern Ireland, Navy troops accidentally blowing up whales in the Falklands because they make the same sound as submarines...all true.

This show will be at Chapter 13th-15th June. Come and see it. You don't have to be pro-war (is anyone pro-war?), this is not a piece of patriotic propaganda but neither is it a group of artists saying war is bad. It' a story of how boys became men, went away to war and came home someone different.

And its a story of women. Their war is still raging.

No actors are used, real stories told in the theatre by the people who've lived therm.

We are entering into a collaborative process of shaping them, guiding them into one story which we will present to an audience....artists, military men and family members working together...

For the first time in Wales, at Chapter from 13th-15th June 2012, military veterans and their families will take to the stage to tell their own unique stories of life in the armed forces, and the struggle of coming home to Wales. They will express, from first-hand experience the invisible battle of post-traumatic stress disorder, and the effect this has on veterans and their families.

The audience will be invited to bear witness to a veteran’s daily struggle in adapting to a civilian way of life.

“Abandoned Brothers” will give a platform for veterans to speak out in a creative way about their inner battles. The transformative potential of the arts is beginning to be recognised within the military in some countries, and Re-Live are excited to be creating the first theatre event of its kind in Wales.

“I’ve got 30 years of pain to get out, the stories are bursting out of me”, William Field, Falklands Veteran. “This feels like a chance to turn things around”.

We hope we will create a unique theatre experience that brings together the voices of veterans from World War Two, Northern Ireland, The Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan in a powerful and timely performance.

This show is not about the historical facts of war, but the emotional and personal accounts of war told by those who've experienced it. They have a story they really want to tell.

Working with my Dad is profound and bloody frustrating! We are not the Redgrave’s, or the Fonda’s, we are the Diamond’s, rough and nearly

I’m directing my Dad!(Many swear words follow) It’s tough at times. I say “Dad, sorry Jeff, can you tone it down, and please don’t move your
head until the music comes in, thanks” He stares at me, but does what I ask.

As I direct him, I feel the power shift between us. He’s my Dad and I’m his daughter, and yet in the rehearsal room I feel the responsibility
of supporting him and making sure he’s the best he can be for the opening night.
The roles have truly reversed. And yet, when we break for lunch everything
changes. I tuck into a chocolate biscuit and my Dad says “ Karin, do you think you
should be having another biscuit?” I spit back “Dad, just let me eat what I want ok?”
and soon we’re back to being father and daughter again.

What makes this show unique is my Dad will be re-telling significant moments from his life on stage. He’s not hiding behind a character
or a song and dance number, but bravely sharing his life with an audience. He’s
had a colourful past, and I’ve listened to him in rehearsals share very painful memories
about his life, things I never knew, moments I might never have
known if I wasn’t directing this show. How many of us are curious about the
darker sides of our parents’ lives? Who dares ask the questions?

I’ve always had an emotionally charged relationship with my father; it’s always been a bit on the choppy side. But since rehearsing this show, I’ve
really got to know him as Jeff, and not just Dad, and started to forgive him
for all the parental crap I’ve carried with me all my life. Cathartic indeed.

If my Dad can get up on stage and be bold enough to share his life with an audience, then I must do my damndest to help him achieve it
with integrity, passion and strength.

This moment between us will never happen again, we will never be this close again. So while he berates me for having another chocolate
biscuit, I try very hard to calm the fat fury and remember we are family, but
god, they can bloody push those buttons!

We are in the midst of three people's lives - Terri, Marianne and Jeff .In our rehearsal room at Chapter, we are immersed in their memories, stories and time-lines. Time and again we listen to hilarious, painful, profound episodes from 70+ years of living, we are humbled and honoured by their openness and then one of us utters the words we've all come to dread "That's great...but I don't think we can fit it in the show"...Reality. We are creating some kind of performance (is it theatre, is it storytellling, is it catharsis?) from the life stories of three people. The show is not based on their lives, the show is their lives. Nothing is fictionalised, no names are changed. The responsibility is huge - we, as "directors" are constantly balancing the needs of the performers and the needs of an audience. We feel a protectiveness to our three, they have shared their lives with us and next week will share those lives with an audience. They do not cower, shy away from the mistakes, the shame, they face their memories squarely, look the past in the eye with a directness that is unnerving at times. Many times as I sit in rehearsals, I ask myself "Could I do this? Could I lay myself bare in this way?" And yet the pay off looks good. After a long day of reflecting and re-living, the three of them charge out of Chapter with the energy of 20 year olds, laughing their heads off and shouting "Tu-qwaaa".

We have a dilemna about getting the show reviewed. A fear of criticism? An urge to protect the three perfomers? They are not playing a role, they are playing themselves, being themselves..perhaps the most vulnerable you can be in the theatre. But we are choosing to put it out there in the world, we want to know how people feel about it, what they think about this kind of work so perhaps we should be encouraging people to review it?
Any thoughts gratefully received!
