There are three residencies in the mix this year; building on existing relationships and creating new partnerships that will nurture and support artists in their exploration of creating new work for and with children and young people. The emphasis this year is on making work with and for families and…drum roll please.. We’re thrilled that Gavin Porter a filmmaker and theatre maker will be resident at The Riverfront, Newport. Gavin worked for National Theatre Wales leading on the Big Democracy Project and he has also worked in various freelance roles, including as an engagement artist and theatre director.

In what will be The Welfare, Ystradgynlais’ third year as a Platfform venue partner we are thrilled to announce that The Jones Collective will be taking up residence. The company is made up of designer Buddug James Jones and writer/director Jesse Briton. The collective work across art forms using real life stories, events and people to explore contemporary social issues. Their work draws inspiration from people and communities they meet, with a particular interest in working rurally to draw inspiration from the landscape and it's people.

Brand new for year three is the exciting addition of Pontio, Bangor to the Platfform family. This new partnership has been designed specifically to support artists who are interested in making Welsh language or bilingual work with and for families. This residency is well under way with artist Elgan Rhys exploring the importance play has in the lives of children and adults alike, celebrating the complexities of the how, where, why, with who and what of play in our ever-busy world. Elgan is a bilingual performer, writer and creator and in his work with children he hopes to inspire fun and play, to build confidence and to ignite children's imaginations in a collaborative process as he develops original theatre for a family audience.

From Theatr Iolo’s Chair Rebecca Gould:

“Platfform has over the past two years offered audiences, artists and communities a wealth of incredibly creative activity to engage with. We’ve had walking tours featuring champion Unicorns, pieces on health and safety obsessed party planners, the phenomenon of teenage diaries explored and brought to life, the establishment of a whole new live art ensemble of young people experimenting with theatrical form, a brilliant new piece of spoken word theatre for teenagers and a unique exploration of how theatre can create spaces for children to navigate feelings of loss. Year three promises to be just as exhilarating as we welcome Elgan, Gavin and The Jones Collective into this collaborative programme. We’re partnering once again with The Riverfront, Newport, The welfare Ystradgynlais; venues that have supported this ambitious and playful programme fantastically and we’re thrilled to be working with Pontio, Bangor for the first time to develop fresh, new welsh language work for families.”

Also new to the Platfform team is Theatr Iolo’s Artist Development Producer Megan Childs who will be working with all of these amazing artists and venues who share Theatr Iolo’s passion for the creation of new work rooted in the communities from where current and new young audience members come from.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mae'n bleser i allu rhannu manylion yr artistiaid a fydd yn cydweithio gyda Theatr Iolo a'r canolfannau-bartneriaid yn nhrydedd flwyddyn rhaglen datblygu artistiaid Theatr Iolo, Platfform.

Mae tri cyfnod preswyl yn rhan o'r arlwy eleni yn adeiladu ar, a chreu, partneriaethau a fydd yn annog a chefnogi artistiaid wrth iddynt greu gwaith newydd i blant a phobol ifanc. Bydd y pwyslais eleni ar greu gwaith i deuluoedd a....gyda bonllef fyddarol.....rydym wrth ein bodd yn datgelu y bydd y gwneuthurwr ffilm a theatr Gavin Jones yn treulio cyfnod preswyl yn Theatr Glan-yr-Afon, Casnewydd. Mae Gavin wedi gweithio gyda National Theatre Wales yn arwain ar eu prosiect Big Democracy yn ogystal a sawl rôl llawrydd gan gynnwys cyfarwyddwr theatr ac artist ymgysylltiol.

Hon yw trydedd blwyddyn Neuadd Lês, Ystradgynlais fel canolfan-bartner i Platfform ac mae'n bleser datgan y bydd The Jones Collective yn cychwyn ar gyfnod preswyl yno - cwmni y cynllunydd Buddug James Jones a'r ysgrifennwraig/cyfarwyddwraig Jesse Briton. Mae'r cwmni yn defnyddio sawl ffurf ar gelfyddyd, yn defnyddio straeon gwir, digwyddiadau a phobol, i drafod materion cymdeithasol cyfoes. Daw eu hysbrydoliaeth o'r cymunedau a'r bobl y maent yn eu cyfarfod; yn arbennig yng nghefn gwlad lle mae'r tirwedd a'r boblogaeth yn sbarduno y creu.

Ychwanegiad cyffrous i drydedd blwyddyn Platfform yw croesawu Pontio, Bangor i'r teulu. Datblygwyd y bartneriaeth newydd hon yn arbennig i gefnogi artistiaid oedd â diddordeb mewn creu gwaith Cymraeg neu ddwyieithog ar gyfer teuluoedd. Eisoes mae'r artist Elgan Rhys wedi bod ar gyfnod preswyl yno ers rhai wythnosau, yn darganfod pwysigrwydd chwarae i fywyd plant ac oedolion a dathlu cymhlethodadau cynyddol ein byd prysur wrth edrych ar sut, lle, pam, be a gyda phwy y mae pawb yn chwarae. Mae Elgan yn berfformiwr, ysgrifennwr a chrëwr dwyieithog a thrwy ei waith gyda phlant ei obaith yw i ysbrydoli hwyl, chwarae, hyder a dychymyg wrth gydweithio gyda hwy wrth iddo greu theatr wreiddiol i gynulleidfa deuluol.

Dywedod Rebecca Gould, Cadeirydd Theatr Iolo:

“Dros y ddwy flynedd ddiwethaf mae Platfform wedi cynnig cyfoeth o weithgareddau creadigol i gynulleidfaoedd, artistiaid a chymunedau. Cawsom deithiau cerdded gydag uncyrn arbennig, darnau am gynllunwyr parti ag obsesiwn â iechyd a diogelwch, archwiliad o ddyddiaduron pobl ifanc, ensemble celfyddyd fyw newydd o bobl ifanc yn arbrofi gyda ffurfiau theatrig, darn newydd gwych o theatr lafar i bobl ifanc, ac archwiliad unigryw o'r modd y gall theatr greu gofod i blant ystyried syniadau am golled. Mae Blwyddyn Tri yn addo bod mor gyffrous bob tamaid wrth i ni groesawu Elgan, Gavin a Grŵp Jones i'r rhaglen gydweithredol hon. Rydym yn gweithio unwaith eto gyda Theatr Glan-yr-afon, Casnewydd, a'r Neuadd Les yn Ystradgynlais; mae'r rhain yn lleoliadau a gefnogodd raglen uchelgeisiol a chwareus Platfform i'r carn ac rydym yn falch iawn o allu gweithio am y tro cyntaf gyda Chanolfan Pontio, Bangor, wrth i ni ddatblygu gwaith Cymraeg newydd i deuluoedd.”

Yn newydd hefyd i dîm Platfform mae Cynhyrchydd Datblygiad Artistiaid Theatr Iolo, Megan Childs. Bydd Megan yn cydweithio â'r holl artistiaid a chanolfannau uchod sydd yn rhannu y weledigaeth; i greu gwaith artistig newydd wedi ei wreiddio yn y gymuned - cartref cynulleidfa ifanc y theatr yn y dyddiau yma a'r dyddiau i ddod.....

Artistic Director, Kevin Lewis, is stepping down from his role at the Cardiff based theatre company after 27 years. He is leaving Theatr Iolo at the end of March 2018 to pursue new opportunities after nearly three decades creating award-winning theatre productions for children and young people.

During his time at Theatr Iolo he has created over 70 productions and toured work developed in Wales across the UK and the world.

Highlights during his tenure include being the first Welsh theatre company to perform at Sydney Opera House, developing a series of world renowned projects for the very young with Sarah Argent, and winning several awards including a Beacon of Excellence Award by Arts Council of Wales, a Tron Award for Best Play for Young People for ‘Bison and Sons’ and a Theatre Critics of Wales Award for Best Play for Children for ‘Grimm Tales’.

Of his time at the company, he said: “I have been so lucky and privileged to have been Artistic Director of Theatr Iolo for the last 27 years and, in the company’s 30th birthday year, I feel it is now time for me to move on.

“I am indebted to the hundreds of talented and passionate colleagues with whom I’ve worked over the years to create and present and sometimes perform theatre that has delighted, stimulated, and transported tens of thousands of children and young people and their teachers and families.

“I am also hugely grateful to the colleagues across the globe (many of whom have become dear friends, one of whom became my wife!) with whom I have collaborated and talked into the night about our shared passion for the most important of audiences.

“I am particularly indebted to the children, young people, and teachers we have worked with whose thoughts, ideas and experiences have inspired and shaped the work we do. I would also like to thank the Theatr Iolo board for their support over the years, Cardiff Council and Arts Council of Wales whose funding has enabled the work to happen.

“It is time for a new Artistic Director to lead the company and I am most excited to see how the company will develop under their leadership.”

As Theatr Iolo embarks on its 30th anniversary, the charity is now seeking to recruit a new Artistic Director to develop the artistic direction of the company for the next 30 years, while continuing to deliver artistic experiences of the highest quality for children and young people across Wales.

Rebecca Gould, Chair of the board of Theatr Iolo, said: “After 27 years with the company, we are naturally sad to see Kevin leave Theatr Iolo.

“Under his artistic direction, the company has gone from strength to strength and he has played a hugely important role in the development of children’s theatre in Wales and beyond.

“We are very grateful for all that he has brought to the company and wish him well for the future.

“While he is leaving us in his current role, we look forward to continuing our association with Kevin.

“As we celebrate Theatr Iolo’s 30th anniversary it is an exciting time for someone new to come in and lead and shape the next chapter of our story.”

Theatr Iolo will be recruiting during April and information will be available at www.theatriolo.com

What’s the value of revisiting the past through a performed re-enactment? Can we ever get it right, or is it more valuable to get it wrong and to rewrite history? Greg Wohead’s Comeback Special is (sort of) a re-enactment of Elvis Presley’s 1968 Comeback Special. In this practical workshop he will share his strategies for the slippery process of re-enactment, and we will explore what it can mean to haunt a performance with ghosts of the past. We will find ways of generating material and shaping performances out of the ruins of political and personal histories, and we will mischievously insert ourselves into situations where we have no business being.

This workshop is directly linked to Greg’s latest show Comeback Special, which he is performing at Chapter on Monday 31st October and Tuesday 1st November. We are delighted to be able to offer a workshop alongside this but there are just 10 spaces available so if you would like to be considered, don’t delay! Please contact Olivia Harris at olivia@theatriolo.com no later than Monday 24th October expressing your interest. Please include a couple of sentences about why you would like to be attend and what you’d like to get out of the workshop in your email.
Ymddiriedolwyr Theatr Iolotag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2016-09-13:3152760:BlogPost:2565692016-09-13T14:14:10.000ZTheatr Iolohttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/TheatrIolo

Theatr Iolo is an equal opportunities organisation and especially welcomes people with disabilities or with a BAME background. The board has recently adopted a new Equalities and Diversity Action Plan which actively promotes a greater understanding of diversity within the organisation and is committed to changing its operations to be at the forefront of best practice.

The company

Theatr Iolo is an award-winning theatre company based in Cardiff which specialises in creating work for children, young people and families.

It was formed in 1987 by a group of theatre practitioners. Over the past 29 years Theatr Iolo has created over 80 productions and played to over 350,000 children and young people throughout Wales, the UK and internationally. The company’s core work is producing work for young audiences, defined as aged under 26. It is particularly known and respected for its work for early years (babies to under 5s) but has recently received acclaim for its work for young adults.

There are three strands of activity throughout the year:

Create - We create work for babies, toddlers, children and young people and regularly tour Wales, the UK and internationally with our productions. We also co-produce and co-create work with other companies. Recent partners include: Battersea Arts Centre, the Unicorn, the egg Theatre Royal Bath, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Bristol Old Vic and Ovalhouse.

Cultivate: We support artists and smaller theatre and dance companies through a variety of ways, either through giving them rehearsal space or producing, mentoring and marketing support or through our emerging artist programme, Platfform. This strand also seed-funds new ideas by artists including Christopher Brett Bailey, Caroline Horton and Polar Bear.

Curate - We aim to bring the best of theatre for young audiences and families to Wales, work we see and believe audiences in Wales should have the opportunity to see. We present this in partner venues through the country.

As an example of a year’s activity, in 2013/14, we toured eight productions which played to c.18,600 people in 307 performances, including representing Wales in the Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow in 2014. In 2015 the company presented Dylan Thomas’ Adventures in the Skin Trade at Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne in Australia, becoming the first Welsh theatre company to do so. The company currently has co-productions in development with Battersea Arts Centre and Consol Theatre Germany and commissions for new works from Caroline Horton, Seiriol Davies and Christopher Brett Bailey.

The operations

The company is based in Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, and currently has a rehearsal room provided as in-kind support from Cardiff Council. It is also currently part of a capital feasibility study to build a permanent home for the company. The company is a revenue funded client of Arts Council of Wales, currently receiving c.£250,000 per annum. This is in addition to our three-year artist and audience development programme called Platfform, jointly funded by ACW through the National Lottery and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

The joint CEOs are supported by a Marketing Officer, Finance Officer, Associate Producer for Artist Development and an Administrator.

The board

The board currently comprises six members, with expertise from the arts, the legal profession, broadcasting, marketing, business and digital. The board meets a minimum of four times a year. Laura H Drane is the chair, and Mark Rhys Jones is the vice chair; current trustees include Rebecca Gould, Paul Scudamore, Elwyn Davies and Aled Rowlands.

The process

After this call out, we hope to speak and meet with as many candidates as possible during August/ September. We then hope to invite interested new board members to observe the next board meeting in October 2016, with a view to them potentially joining at the following meeting in January 2017.

If you would like to be considered as a trustee, please contact Laura Drane (details below) with a CV and short letter/ email, and to arrange a phone call/ short face to face meeting with her and one of the CEOs.

PLATFFORM – Artist Development Opportunity

Open call for artists and organisations for Platfform (year one)…

I joined Theatr Iolo in March to design and launch Platfform, a brand new three-year artist development programme. It’s designed to support emerging artists and organisations from across the performing arts interested in making theatre for and with babies, children, young people and / or families. After two full-on and fun months of planning, researching and copious tea-drinking I am over-the-moon to announce the programme is now open for applications from artists and organisations for year one.

Emerging devisers, directors, writers, choreographers, dancers, musicians, poets, spoken word artists, comedians, game-makers, puppeteers, partnerships, live artists - you name it. Each year we will pair 3 artists or organisations working across these art forms with one of three partner venues across Wales for residencies taking place over 7 months (September 2015 – March 2016). Raring to go for year one are Parc & Dare in Treorchy, Cardiff’s Chapter Arts and The Welfare in Ystradgynlais.

The 3 artists / companies selected for year one will receive:

Space and support from their partner venue over the 7 month residency to develop, explore and deliver their ideas and programme of activity

Support from the Associate Producer to realise their ideas and make links with the community, aswell as administrative and marketing support

Access to a bespoke package of R&D and training to be agreed with the Associate Producer

Mentor support from within the company and industry practitioners

A daily rate adhering to industry standards

A project budget of £12,000 to be managed with the Associate Producer.

Platfform is open to emerging artists and companies. If you’re at the beginning of your career (with a couple of projects under your belts) or further into your career but emerging into young people’s theatre for the first time, you are eligible. We’re looking for original, bold and exciting ideas from artists and companies passionate about sharing those ideas with a network of artists, venues and communities.

So, if you fit into one of the descriptions of above, and are interested in finding out more – we’d love to hear from you!

We are now inviting submissions from artists and organisations interested in being part of year one. Online applications should be open from Monday 18th May until the deadline of Wednesday June 24th at 5pm. We'll announce when the applications are open via twitter @iolo_platfform and the Theatr Iolo Facebook account so keep your eyes peeled!

Your first step should be to check out the website and acquaint yourself with the programme and the application process. You can do that here: http://bit.ly/1cpEPBI

Your next step should be to follow us on twitter so you can keep up to date with developments and news, which you can do @iolo_platfform

I’ll be spending some time at venues across Wales over the next few weeks talking to artists and companies about the programme, what it can offer and how you can be a part of it. If you’d like a chat about Platfform, check out the ‘Key Dates’ tab on the website for where I’ll be and when, and then drop me a line to book your slot at olivia@theatriolo.com

I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Cheers

Olivia
