Read the open letter in full below | Testun llawn y llythyr isod:

This is a letter to self-employed and freelance theatre and performance makers in the UK. To the actors, playwrights, directors, choreographers, stage managers, designers, stage crews and set-builders to name just a few.

We really miss being with you during this period of lockdown. Making theatre and performance is a collaborative endeavour, so we are particularly affected by having to be apart from one another right now. We're not able to come together, in the same space, to share the experience of a live performance. We're not able to practise and enjoy our artform in its most basic form.

It's now looking increasingly likely that won't be possible for months to come, and we recognise that many freelancers face real uncertainty about if and how they will be able to continue to work in theatre. 70% of people who work in theatre and performance in the UK are freelance or self-employed, and it's for this workforce, in all its diversity and complexity, that the impact of the current situation is most acute.

During these past weeks we have had conversations with many of you to understand your needs and the ways you have been affected. We are writing to express our support for you, and to lay out some practical steps we are taking to improve the situation based on these conversations.

As well as exploring ways of producing work with freelancers during lockdown, and using this time to develop new projects with freelancers for the future, we are also are working together to coordinate our response to the government, to articulate clearly what we can offer and what we need.

Most urgently, we are calling for the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme to be extended in line with furloughing, for all self-employed workers, and in the specific case of theatre and performance workers, until theatres are able to safely reopen. We also want to see criteria removed from the scheme which are stopping legitimate and much-needed claims.

Some of you are already involved in these conversations. We welcome your voices and need to hear from more of you in the conversations to come. Your unique networks, skillsets, perspectives, and ideas are vital to the entire sector, and we need to work with you in our response to this crisis.

Each of the organisations who've signed this letter are committed to reaching out to their family of self-employed and freelance theatre makers; listening to how this is affecting your work and lives, and to your needs and ideas for the future.

More than that, we want to facilitate the establishment of a national task force of self-employed theatre and performance makers. The purpose of the task force is to strengthen the influence of the self-employed theatre and performance community. It would create ongoing points of connection between freelancers and organisations, and amplify the voice of the self-employed in the conversations to come. To help establish the task force, each of the organisations signing this letter will support a freelancer to join the group, ensuring they are paid for their time.

We want to offer a message of hope and solidarity. Our well-practised ability to work together, to form connections, and build relationships will help us through this. One day, hopefully soon, we will all be able to meet together, as people have done for centuries, in a shared space, for a shared experience. In the meantime, we remain committed to working for you and with you towards a sustainable future for theatre and performance.
[Closed | Wedi cau] Network FAQs: New Digital Commissions | Comisiynau Digidol Newyddtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2020-04-07:3152760:BlogPost:2889172020-04-07T14:00:00.000ZDylan Huwhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/ntw_dylan

What support will be provided by National Theatre Wales and/or Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru?

NTW and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru staff are currently working remotely and will support each digital commission. This will include producing, production, marketing and artist development support. The budget, of up to £5,000, will be allocated in discussion between the lead artists and either NTW or Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, and the rates for all collaborators is £585 per week / £100 per day. The budget is also intended to cover production costs and any team members with very specific technical skills that can’t be covered by NTW and Theatr Gen's in-house production teams. The intention is that these projects will be delivered relatively quickly and artists working on them will only be doing so for a limited time. Production costs are likely to include design costs and specific equipment costs if this equipment cannot be supplied by NTW/Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru.

How does the rolling application process work?

Applications open initially on Monday 6th April. The first decision date will be in April, with a second decision date in early May and a third decision date in late May. On each decision date three commissions will be awarded. This means we are currently looking at nine commissions in total. Applications received earlier in the process may still be considered throughout the length of the project. We will be updating our social media pages continuously with all the relevant dates.

Will I be working with NTW or Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru?

NTW and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are working closely on the delivery of the digital commissions, in response to the needs of each individual selected project. The applications are being read by a spread of staff from across both Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and National Theatre Wales regardless of their linguistic medium. Selection is based on the quality of the applications alone and will not be informed by the intended language of the projects. Applications for bilingual projects are not being treated more favourably.

Can I apply with the same project more than once?

Because applications may be taken forwards from previous rounds there is no need to submit the same project more than once.

Can I still apply if I don’t know exactly what kind of digital platform I would want to use?

Yes. NTW’s production and producing teams are here to provide help and expertise. They will work with you to find the best form and platform for your idea. However, we ask that your project should be specifically designed with a digital platform and audience in mind.

I’ve never made a professional theatrical production before. Can I still apply?

We invite applications from everyone who is interested in creating a new live project in a digital space. The projects will be selected based on the individual submissions’ merits. Our aim is to create a programme of high-quality work that lives up to the best of NTW and Theatr Gen.

Is this open call only for people born or living in Wales?

We invite applications from those who were born, trained and/or currently reside in Wales. If you’re applying as a group, this criteria should apply to the majority of the group.

I have a great idea for a project but don’t know who my collaborators are.

That’s fine. We work with you to develop all aspects of the project using NTW’s networks and resources, including finding the right creative team.

I’m already developing a project idea elsewhere that I think would work well as a Network digital commission. Can I still apply?

We don’t want to limit your ideas. If you think a Network digital commission with National Theatre Wales and/or Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru is the right home for your project, then it is.

Pa gefnogaeth bydd ar gael gan National Theatre Wales a/neu Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru?

Mae staff NTW a Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru yn gweithio o adref, a byddwn yn cefnogi pob comisiwn digidol. Bydd hyn yn cynnwys cefnogaeth technegol, cynhyrchu, marchnata a Datblygu Creadigol. Bydd y cyllid, o hyd at £5,000, yn cael ei wario o ganlyniad i drafodaeth rhwng y prif artist a naill ai NTW neu Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, a'r ffioedd i holl artistiaid ar y prosiect yw £585 yr wythnos / £100 y diwrnod. I’w cynnwys yn y ffigwr hwn hefyd bydd ffioedd y tim cynhyrchu ac unrhyw aelodau o’r tim creadigol ag arbenigeddau sydd tu hwnt i dimoedd cynhyrchu mewnol NTW a Theatr Gen. Y bwriad ydy cael y prosiectau allan yn weddol sydyn, gyda’r artistiaid yn gweithio arnynt am gyfnod cyfyngedig. Mae costau cynhyrchu yn debygol i gynnwys costau dylunio a chostau deunyddiau penodol na all NTW na Theatr Gen eu darparu.

Sut bydd amserlen y broses geisiadau yn gweithio?

Mae ceisiadau yn agor ar Ddydd Llun y 6ed o Ebrill. Mae’r dyddiad dethol cyntaf ym mis Ebrill, yr ail ym mis Mai, a’r trydydd ym mis Mehefin. Ar bob dyddiad dethol bydd tri prosiect yn cael eu dewis. Rydym yn bwriadu felly comisiynu naw prosiect i gyd. (Mae posibilrwydd y byddwn yn ymestyn y cyfnod a’r nifer.) Bydd ceisiadau a dderbynir yn gynt yn y broses dal i gael eu cysidro trwy gydol hyd y prosiect. Byddwn yn rhoi’r dyddiadau perthnasol diweddaraf ar ein cyfryngau cymdeithasol yn rheolaidd.

A fydda i’n gweithio gyda NTW neu Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru?

Bydd NTW a Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru yn gweithio’n agos i gyflwyno’r comisiynau digidol, gan ymateb i anghenion penodol pob prosiect a ddewisir.

Ydw i’n cael gwneud cais gyda’r un syniad mwy nag unwaith?

Gan fod ceisiadau’n cael eu cymryd ymlaen o rowndiau cynharach, does dim angen i chi wneud mwy nag un cais.

Ydw i’n cael gwneud cais os nad ydw i’n gwybod yn union pa blatfform digidol dwi eisiau defnyddio?

Wyt. Bydd gwahoddiad agored i chi gymryd mantais o holl gymorth ac arbenigedd timoedd cynhyrchu NTW a Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. Byddwn yn gweithio gyda chi i ddarganfod ffurf a platfform eich syniad. Serch hynny, gofynwn bod eich prosiect yn cael ei ddylunio gyda ffurf a chynulleidfa ddigidol mewn golwg.

Dwi heb greu cynhyrchiad theatr proffesiynol cyn hyn. Ydw i dal yn cael gwneud cais?

Rydym yn croesawu ceisiadau gan unrhywun sydd â diddordeb creu prosiect byw newydd mewn gofod digidol. Bydd y prosiectau’n cael eu dethol yn seiliedig ar eu cryfderau unigol fel ceisiadau. Ein bwriad yw creu rhaglen o waith o safon sy’n deilwng o’r gorau o NTW.

Ydy’r alwad yma ar gyfer trigolion o Gymru yn unig?

Rydym yn croesawu ceisiadau gan rheiny a gafodd eu geni, hyfforddi neu sydd ‘nawr yn byw yng Nghymru. Os ydych yn ymgeisio fel grwp, dylai’r criteria yma berthnasu i fwyafrif y grwp.

Mae gen i syniad gwych am brosiect ond nid wyf yn gwybod pwy dylai fy nghyd-artistiaid fod.

Dim problem. Byddwn yn gweithio gyda chi i ddatblygu holl elfennau’r prosiect, gan ddefnyddio holl ryngweithiau ac adnoddau NTW, gan gynnwys ffurfio’r tim creadigol perffaith.

Dwi’n datblygu syniad ar gyfer y prosiect hwn gyda rhywun arall yn barod, ond gall weithio’n dda fel rhan o rhaglen Network. Ydw i dal yn cael gwneud cais?

Nid oes diddordeb gennym gyfyngu eich syniadau. Chi sydd yn gwybod os mai comisiwn digidol fel rhan o Network yw’r cartref iawn ar gyfer eich syniad.
FFOLIO (BBC/Ffilm Cymru) - Opportunity for emerging creatives | Cyfle i artistiaid datblygoltag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2020-01-06:3152760:BlogPost:2877452020-01-06T10:54:46.000ZDylan Huwhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/ntw_dylan

Emerging Producers Cynhyrchwyr Datblygol

We are looking for two Emerging Producers to join the Creative Development team, to support the development of new work through our Located Residencies programme, supported by the Creative Development team. This is an opportunity for producers with limited professional experience to develop their skills in producing, whilst growing their professional networks and helping artists to create brand new work.

The Emerging Producers will be supported to increase their knowledge and understanding of the role of the producer, build their practical skills, contacts and experience on-the-job, while establishing enduring links with a pool of independent artists. They will also be instrumental in ensuring the work of those artists is seen by local communities and helping to conceive of practical next steps to support the development of the work. We will also look to find opportunities for the Emerging Producers to work on NTW’s own research and development projects, dependent on timelines and availability.

Applicants should have some producing experience already (either for other artists/companies or self-produced work), have a passion for new work and work in development and a commitment to the development of the role of the producer in Wales. Each Emerging Producer will receive a bursary of £5,000 to cover their involvement (approx. total of 10 weeks work) plus up to £1,000 to spend on training and ‘Go and See’ opportunities to see important work and meet other producers. Travel and accommodation in Wales will also be covered by NTW.

To apply, submit an up-to-date CV and a Cover Letter to submissions@nationaltheatrewales.org that includes:

a statement about why you think this is the right opportunity to support your development at this stage of your career;

a statement about your understanding of the role of the Emerging Producer;

details of your producing experience;

a statement about your connection to the development of performance work in Wales;

a statement about what you see as the biggest challenge to overcome when producing new work in Wales; and

the contact details of two referees who know your work.

Located Residencies Cyfnodau Preswyl ar Leoliad

Located Residencies are unique opportunities to spend research and development time looking at new performance ideas, that are embedded in a location or community. This is an opportunity to conceive and shape your own residency – experimenting, taking creative risks and exploring your practice within a specific context that you identify. These residencies will offer a first stage of research and development (R&D). They may be the starting points for future projects and productions that have a deep and meaningful connection with notions of ‘people’ and ‘place’.

This year has seen National Theatre Wales undertake Egin, our curated residency on one of the most urgent issues of our time: climate breakdown and our relationship to ourselves and the planet. In response to the many ideas and conversations that were prompted by this work, we want to continue to support the development of new projects that embrace the most pertinent issues of today. We hope that these Located Residencies are a period of reflection and dialogue that explore these issues in relation to the people and place of Wales. In your submission, we will be looking for examples of how you think this residency will push the boundaries of your practice and/or have the potential to create change (for you, your practice, or anyone else you may be working with). Your submission will also clearly articulate how the project addresses local and global concerns, whilst physically needing to be undertaken within Wales.

We expect that most residencies will last for around a week and that there will be an important moment to share your ideas and process with others. We will expect to work with the selected artists to support the design of their residency and however they chose to share their results with a wider group of people.

Located Residencies are open to all artists who are interested in making performance – writers, directors, choreographers, designers, movers, makers, digitals creatives - at any stage in their careers. We particularly welcome submissions from artists who come from underrepresented groups (specifically artists of colour, or artists with additional needs).
