-The Start-

In 2015 I was studying Theatre, Television and Performance at Glyndwr university and I was able to be present for a TEAM presentation by Devinda De Silva and Laura Thomas.

They discussed what the NTW Community was and how to get involved as an artist. I joined the Community and applied for a Stage management placement over the Summer which was a great experience especially as I was required to attain work experience as part of my course.

After spending the Summer working on a tremendous project '150 Patagonia' by Marc Rees (which I've also blogged about), I was able to gain sooo much experience whilst working as part of the production for a month during the rehearsal process, this with a professional Director, Stage-manager, Designers, Production manager and many more creative professionals.

-Middle-

National Theatre Wales TEAM then gave me the opportunity to use my newly acquired knowledge to then go on to stage manage a show myself, which became the December 2015 'TEAM Performance party' in Wrexham. This was a stand out moment for me as somebody with, at times, a lack of self confidence; it was surreal to have such a renowned company have so much confidence in me that I could manage this by myself.

By this I mean they never said "You cant..." They always were encouraging and built me up, which I think is so important for people aspiring to achieve something. Positivity was something that was apparent when working with the National Theatre Wales community and definitely a part of their ethos.
I remember having a conversation with TEAM Assistant at the time, Laura Thomas, in which I told her about my insecurities, and she was nothing but positive and gave me such reinforcement that I was doing a great job. This was refreshing and guest what...? The the show was a success!

-Then-

I joined National theatre Wales TEAM Panel in 2016. This was the best decision I'd make as I've grown so much, being able to build my confidence to be able to deliver a TEAM presentation in Swansea with Anna Poole, as well as to my previous course's new students at Glyndwr University this year alongside Tom Wentworth.

Again all these opportunities have built me as a person. Nevertheless, I may have weak points but this process has highlighted what I'm good at and what I can improve in a positive manner!

Since working on different projects with and outside NTW, I have witnessed different methods, and I am aware of which are most effective and which can be less productive and negative.

And that is what a journey is - there've been times when I've felt really low and overwhelmed, and times when I've felt elated. Throughout, National theatre Wales have inspired me to enjoy what I do, to travel, to be strong and to follow my passion, and not be swayed be anything!

I'd describe NTW Team as a friendship - this meaning they are people who you want to be around not have to be around!
I can't wait to see what is next on this never ending journey!

So!

Swarm is fast approaching and it's been a manic few weeks, with that a great learning curve for me as Emerging Director with Fio!

Between facilitating Youth workshops at both Wales Millennium Centre and Forsythia Youth project(in Merthyr), and contacting schools to deliver fun Fio taster workshops(takes a breath), I've had a hectic time meeting numerous amounts of people in aim of getting a large community cast involved in #Swarm (the more the merrier and all that!)

However next week rehearsals will officially be underway! which I'm really excited about, mainly because I will see the #Swarm Actors and Community Cast merge together to create one big unconventional site-specific experience for an audience!

But anyway I've stressed, I've achieved, I've laughed and I've created! I've also seen the evolution of the Swarm production team, we now have great artists, producers, directors, stage manager, sound and designer team which is really helping make our refugee themed project something Powerful that can hopefully challenge views and make our world a better place!

The best part of the process so far has been seeing the young people's response when engaging with theatre, proving theatre really does impact lives! I've also enjoyed working alongside Abdul(and the rest of the team) learning about the name Fio which means to Belong, Create and Grow I feel this process has helped me do just that ;-)

Hi all:-)

How do I begin...from becoming a permanent resident in Cardiff, this week has been manic as I have also been given the opportunity to join FIO theatre company on their project Swarm a piece of immersive theatre, this as Emerging Director. So I'm excited at the prospect of learning throughout this role and hope to gain as much knowledge as possible from it to further progress in my career in theatre.

My first experience of this process was on Tuesday when I was introduced to the cast, who were already a week into rehearsals working on the research stages of the piece, which has the complex theme of immigration. This theme for myself is intriguing and something that I personally would like to delve into and understand more throughout this journey which is what I appreciate most about political theatre as it has the power to educate in a creative way.

Already I have been able to assist in youth group workshops up in Merthyr Tydfil with a group of vibrant young people, who are engaged and really having fun in these early stages, therefore I'm also focussed on developing my workshops skills, in order to be able to facilitate my own.

Combined with this I am able to work alongside the Director of Swarm Abdul Shayek and Producer Alan Humphreys who are both supportive, encouraging and overall great professionals to be on this journey with.

It is great that FIO are able to provide opportunities for young aspiring artistic professionals like myself to develop in a specific role which can help better equipt and prepare an individual for a professional career . I have a feeling that Swarm is definitely going to be something ground-breaking, furthermore I will be documenting my experience throughout the upcoming weeks.

*MY STORY*

I think it was around the end of 2013, when I was doing a part-time evening course with one of my friends of over 15 years when I was let in that something was wrong.

She was always the enthusiastic person who wanted to go out and do things like meals and parties, and at the time she had a really good income for her age(22) and had just purchased a new limited edition car which she was always racing us around in(almost killing us most times).

Maybe a couple months later I started to realise a pattern, that after our classes she never wanted to go home and would always want to in some way prolong the night be it going for late meals or driving everyone home or staying at friends houses.

She lived with her grandparents and older brother, and occasionally saw her mother and father separately but I didn't understand the situation but I never really asked because since I'd known her from the aged of 10 that's how it had always been, and I related because my grandparents were like parents to me too.

Then one day she told me just what had been happening that her older brother had been abusing her and hitting her for no reason every now and again throughout her life, but lately it had been happening more frequently, she stressed that she'd always be on edge and never knew when he was going to come in angry and assault her.

She didn't feel safe in the one place she should and the only time she did was when she was out of the house. This started to affect her sleeping pattern and to my shock she was already very thin (size 8) but she was losing a lot of weight becoming really frail maybe reduced to a size 4-6, this I think through anxiety and depression as she wasn't eating.

I felt so sad to see my friend so down everyday it was like I was losing her bit by bit and after failed attempts of convincing her to get help, I felt like there was nothing that I could do about it other than be there for her when I could. I concentrated on cheering her up but even then I could see her losing so much hope and I didn’t know what to do, because at the time I had 2/3 jobs and was not always around.

Then one day she phoned me and she was really quiet on the phone whispering, and all I remember was that she sounded really scared and she said she needed help, so I got in my car and went to get her. She explained how she was sitting on the sofa and he had pulled the whole sofa backgrounds so she fell and started beating her. That’s when I knew I couldn’t let her go back to the house and I would do anything for her not to be there.

So we went to the police and she told them everything and they said he would be arrested. I’ll never forget when her uncle came and tried to convince her she was doing the wrong thing, I thought how would he feel if he was being abused.

The police said that she should take an over night bag and stay with somebody so I said she could stay with me. But the only problem was that she would have to go back to the house to get clothes. I went with her to get them and it was like something out of mission impossible because we had to do it not knowing if her brother would come back.

I remember being in her bathroom thinking this is like something out of a soap, this stuff really does happen. We were in her room packing all of her essentials when we heard the door bang downstairs she was so scared she thought it was him and it was. Somehow we managed to grab the stuff and walked out the house.

From that day on the police were able to help and get in touch with a social worker who arranged housing for my friend in an unknown area, where she was out of harm’s way and gave her a support.

However I think to myself what about those people who don’t have a friend or person they think can help, what about the people who feel they are voiceless and perhaps a lot younger and are too scared to contact the police and don’t know where to go or who to tell?

*MY AIM*

By doing interactive educational workshops in schools and for people in educational and community settings, I think many people can feel like they not only have a voice but can feel that they are important and have self-worth again. I watched my friend die.. not in the literal sense but as a person by having her true self erased and reduced to someone who was ready to give up and nobody should be made to feel like that.

With support from BAWSO group and other passionate individuals I’d really like to make these workshops a reality and help anyone who feels voiceless finally speak out, in terms of Violence against women.

After attending Bawso's 'Women's Inspirational Day' in Cardiff last week which consisted of women from a community particularly from BAME (Black Asian Minority Ethnicity)giving an account of their personal stories whereby they had been mistreated, I feel this was a great way of educating people on these issues and I'd like to further impact a movement by doing my own creative workshops.

Meanwhile I'll also be finishing university this year which is exciting but also scary!

I'm mainly looking forward to meeting everyone else and sharing our ideas. The project ideas I have for me are quite raw and mainly involve taking big issues within my community(Youth, Abandonment and Vulnerability within society) and exploring them using techniques/methods I'm currently researching and basically giving them a voice ideally on stage but other appropriate platforms too. With advice and guidance from Wrexham council and lecturers on the Glyndwr Theatre Television and Performance course I will be more informed on specific concerns and aims for the project.

Alongside this I'm currently working on a documentary style dissertation about 'The mobile phones impact on society and how it affects young peoples culture' and I think it would be a really great topic to explore and perhaps combine with the previous topic.

It's a working progress that I'm still establishing and would welcome ideas on....wishing everyone a Happy 'Creative' New Year!!

Natasha Simone

Xo
{150} experience in 150 words!tag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2015-07-01:3152760:BlogPost:2307122015-07-01T22:32:14.000ZNatasha Simonehttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/NatashaBigford

As well as this the company morale was high and rehearsals where again in full swing. My role today consisted of being on hand, I helped the dancers time a movement sequence and also observed Gareth and Dafydd tackle tricky Welsh tongue twisters which was definitely the highlight of my day and brought a smile to my face (they are such a pleasure to be around).
Hi All,

I am currently shadowing the Stage Manager position with National Theatre Wales who you probably already know are working alongside Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru on Marc Reess' production of '150 Patagonia'. Day 1 of my NTW placement was a joy as being a completely new face, I was a little anxious as well as excited to get started with rehearsals, however both Devinda, Fiona and other members of NTW made me feel at ease and extremely welcome!
Today we had the initial meet and greet where there were so many new people to get acquainted with, and as I found out a lot of people involved in the production behind scenes on what seems to be quite an intimate story-telling piece. Beginning with a formal meet& great, which consisted of both Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, NTW including myself introducing ourselves to everybody, this aspect was enlightening as it enabled everyone to familiarise themselves with who is doing what roles on the production as well as the Performers in the actual show.
Marc who's the Creator of the piece '150 Patagonia', then briefed the entire company on the back story of the play and his visions. I was then surprised at the pace in which the process moved when the company then split off into two sections and the rehearsal process got underway! Throughout the weeks I will be experiencing an array of duties that go into a production in particular the Stage Managerial role, which although daunting at first, I am extremely excited to be experiencing and hope to rise to the challenge!

See you all tomorrow!
