It was, give or take a few weeks, three years ago I had my first TEAM experience, attending a Leadership training course. This morning I received a letter welcoming me as a National Theatre Wales Board Member as TEAM Representative. It’s been quite a journey!

My experience of attending that Leadership Training day in early 2014 explains a great deal about what TEAM is about, what it means to me & why I’m proud to have been able to represent TEAM for the last three years.

In early 2014 I’d recently moved back to Mid Wales after a decade as an increasingly frustrated London based Actor. While trying to get bookings for a one man show I’d been touring in England, a friend mentioned the NTW online community to me. Whilst having a look around the community I saw a blog post offering a one day course in “Leadership Training” at NTW’s Office. This was certainly something I’d be interested in. It’d be great to (literally) get my foot in the door of NTW HQ. But the cynic I had become said this could be yet another opportunity for starving Artists to be parted with their money in order to be patronised by self appointed experts.

So, when I read that, if I was a TEAM member, the course would not only be free to attend, but that they’d also pay my bus fare, I saw that things worked a little differently at NTW!

I’m pleased to report that the training was very good. Carys Shannon was knowledgeable, helpful & very much geared the training towards Creatives. I believe many of us attendees learnt useful lessons from the day’s training. I also made many invaluable contacts that day.

But, I’m not writing this just to tell you what a smashing time I had on a training course three years ago. I learnt a lot about TEAM from the whole experience that day.

The simple act of inviting people into the office gave me a taste of the open nature of NTW. Everyone is welcome to participate.

The fact that the training was free & expenses were covered showed a commitment to getting rid of financial & geographical barriers to participation. This also demonstrated a commitment to people, valuing TEAM members & their contribution to the the Arts & Community in Wales.

This set off a chain of events for me as I grew to realise that TEAM & NTW were unlike many other companies I had come across. Many pay lip service to “Community” & “Inclusiveness”, NTW thrives on it. TEAM is not a community outreach project, it’s at the heart of what NTW is - a theatre company for the Nation of Wales - everyone can get involved, regardless of whether you consider yourself a professional, keen amateur or just interested in the arts. It’s about taking ownership - whatever that means to you. Be that being part of an online community, or influencing the course of & participating in a major production, & all things in between.

Off the back of that first experience I started getting involved in a variety of events - first offering my existing skills at Performance Parties then as my confidence grew I joined TEAM Panel. This involved confronting one of my big fears - giving presentations, as well as representing TEAM at a variety of events across Wales, engaging with communities & facilitating projects. TEAM has helped me develop my leadership skills & supported me in exploring new ideas. One of these ideas was to put together & lead a TEAM Choir. A very rewarding experience.

My newly developed & proven skills led, last year, to two personal & professional highlights. The first was being taken on as Chorus Coordinator for the show “Before I Leave”. The second was being invited to be a part of the incredible TEAM project “I’ll Sing This Song”. You can read up on the project here:

http://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/group/before-i-leave?

You can also download the app from the App store by searching “I’ll Sing this Song”

Today I find myself in the position of being a Board Member for the next year representing TEAM. Something I would never have imagined three years ago. That Leadership Training appears to be working!
Community is not a Dirty Wordtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2016-06-20:3152760:BlogPost:2534912016-06-20T14:19:08.000ZBen Tinniswoodhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/BenTinniswood

“Community is not a dirty word”

I wrote those words in my notebook whilst en route to the Acta Community Theatre Festival in Bristol last week.

There can be connotations of the words “Community Theatre” that are less than helpful. As a working professional in Theatre I've frequently come across assumptions that Community work is somehow lesser than the “High Art” of Professionals putting plays on stages. Indeed, there's even talk of some organisations using “Community Engagement” just as a cynical ticking of a box in order to attract more funding.I'm very pleased to report that National Theatre Wales is not one of them. As a TEAM Panel Member I see first hand how central to NTW the Communities of Wales are.

It was both refreshing & encouraging to see the Community celebrated in style at the Acta festival. With workshops running throughout the day giving us a chance to connect with other practitioners, share ideas & expand our horizons.

One person in a discussion I participated in defined Community work as “Locally Sourced”. I quite like that. Theatre that gives the people of a specific community the opportunity to use their authentic voice authored by & performed by the people excites me. This is activism, empowering people to validate themselves, affirm their beliefs by speaking out, This in turn, if the beliefs are sound can help empower others. This can lead to change, away from a problem to a solution.

For this change to really happen requires more than patting each other on the back for a good show done. Change requires a commitment to the work, spreading the word, watching the ripples turn to waves.

Encouragingly enough, Acta's Festival was more than a local thing. Practitioners & performers had come from across Europe. The connections we made were the same: The desire to empower ourselves & others to make work affecting social change. The themes are universal, the practice excitingly different.

Attending “The People's Platform” in North Merthyr the next day reminded me that Community in action really is an empowering thing.

As we sat around our table at the Penydarren Social Club, debating the questions put to us by the cast I realised something… “People want places to gather, a chance to discuss, define & resolve issues concerning the Community. Everyone these days sits at home with their computer & TV on, front door locked, people don't talk to each other anymore”… As we sat in this packed out Social Club, strangers & neighbours chatting, debating, sharing ideas.

Events like “The People's Platform” are very inspiring & provide a vital spark of debate. It doesn't even have to be a large scale event like these that starts the fire, I'm sure there are smaller scale TEAM initiatives that could get people talking. I, for one, would love to hear about them. The trick is to keep going.

TEAM is National Theatre Wales' Community – Let's keep using it to make a difference.
Critical Chinwag Thoughts - “Tonight I'm going to be the new me”tag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2016-04-09:3152760:BlogPost:2490862016-04-09T10:09:41.000ZBen Tinniswoodhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/BenTinniswood

Of course, they are two different shows & I shouldn't hold them up against each other. But, some of the themes & ideas followed similar lines, so perhaps they do stand up to comparison.

Both shows set out to challenge, both the performer & the audience, they looked at endurance, brutal honesty, exposing the performer(s) & making the audience feel complicit in what was going on in front of us. “Gym Party” hit all of the above perfectly, leading even to me as an audience member staging a quiet rebellion in my seat, refusing to vote on which member of the cast should be saved, whilst the others die!

“Tonight...” though undoubtedly had some fantastic moments, for instance the end “Dance” which was so much a test of endurance for Jess, the performer & due to the lighting & set design becoming the same for the audience – How long can you stare at a strobe before having to avert your eyes? - I also agree with Jac's words on the story of Tim's demise. For me that section was a curious case of getting drawn into a story despite the clear evidence to the contrary- Tim, the deceased, was sat right behind us in the tech box, alive & well. Jess even self administered eyedrops as fake tears before starting the story. But still I was drawn right in. I did feel the emotion of Jess processing what it would be like if she were to lose the person she loved. That was beautiful & painful.

These moments aside, I missed the real passion of their previous work. Though the audience were used as a device in the show, I felt safe & comfortable throughout. When Jess & Tim argued it felt well rehearsed, amusing, but ultimately lacked a truth & immediacy.

One of my fellow Chinwaggers made a comment about the piece feeling like a Stand Up Comedy show at points. I'd concur. I came away feeling I'd had fun, I'd enjoyed the show, but ultimately when I walked back out into the Chapter car park nothing had changed for me in my world.
Critical Chinwag - Come & see "Tonight I'm going to be the new me" - For FREEtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2016-03-23:3152760:BlogPost:2488152016-03-23T15:34:00.000ZBen Tinniswoodhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/BenTinniswood

We’ll be going to the performance at 8pm on Friday 8th April at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff.

I’m really pleased to be hosting this Chinwag. Made in China are such a bold, fearless & exciting collective & their work & collaborators never cease to challenge our expectations of performance.

“A woman takes to the stage. A man watches from the wings. They both wonder if their love will survive what’s about to happen.

Tonight I’m Gonna Be The New Me is an arresting physical endurance act that crashes headfirst into an impossibly true love story - and out the other side. It exposes how we perform our relationships amidst a reality that just won’t live up to what the movies promised.

Disarmingly honest and comically imagined, Tonight I’m Gonna Be The New Me pierces the bloody heart of our obsession with outlasting hardship. Intimate and startlingly immediate, it defies you to watch, in spite of yourself.”

There’s more info on the creative team etc here: http://ow.ly/ZID8z

In return for a FREE ticket and a post show drink, Critical Chinwag participants agree to meet in the Chapter bar after the performance and have an informal chinwag about the production. After that we ask that you tweet and/or blog about the experience and continue the discussion here on the NTW Community website page no later than two days after the performance. Always good to get your thoughts down while they’re fresh, I find. I’m sure everyone will be good for that!

You need to be an ntwTEAM member to apply for a ticket, so if you haven’t already done so set up a profile on NTW Community here: http://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/ and email:team@nationaltheatrewales.org to book a seat. We only have a small number of tickets for this show so it’s first-come, first-served. The deadline is Monday 4th April.

If you’ve been to a Critical Chinwag recently, perhaps you’d like to encourage a friend or two who haven’t been along before to apply for tickets? It’s relaxed, informal & a great way to see some theatre for FREE!

I look forward to meeting some new faces on 8th

Hello again everybody,

We're very pleased to report that the Before I Leave Chorus is sounding really rather good & we are all very much looking forward to taking the stage at the Sherman Theatre in May. Our Men are doing a valiant job, but they need help & as wonderful as our Ladies are sounding, they can't quite hit those Bass & Baritone notes!

In short, we have room for a few more Male Singers.

If you are Male, aged 65+, enjoy a good sing & are interested in being part of what promises to be a rather special production then please read on...

“Before I Leave” is a funny, moving & uplifting production written by Tredegar-born poet and playwright Patrick Jones featuring versions of songs made famous by the likes of Tom Jones, Johnny Cash, Gerry & the Pacemakers and more. The play will also feature brand new songs written for the show by internationally famous Blackwood band, Manic Street Preachers.

The play is a joint production between National Theatre Wales and Wales Millennium Centre, presented as part of the Festival of the Voice and will play at The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff.

Directed by Matthew Dunster, Before I Leave tells the story of a choir of Men and Women living with dementia and the incredible bonding power of music. It will feature a Chorus of singers on stage performing key songs alongside our cast of professional actors.

You don’t need to have acting experience to be part of our Chorus, just a love of singing, a good voice and the ability to learn harmonies. If you can read music too, that would be great, but not essential.

If you have a curiosity to try new things, meet new people, sing some wonderful songs and have fun as part of the creative team bringing a brand new piece of life affirming Theatre to life, then we’d love to hear from you.

The commitment will include these key dates:

Get in touch. Initial meeting taking place Monday 14th March

Highlights, you ask?

Well, they include my first visit to Wrexham for TEAM Performance Party, meeting lots of very talented folk, swapping ideas & introducing them to the many ways they can get involved with us.

Stories of the Streets gave me the opportunity to see my Scriptwriting skills put to the test by a fantastic creative team.

TEAM Choir also enjoyed our first performance at the beautiful Penarth Pier Pavillion.

Helping put together the Mid Wales Rethinking Education meeting in Brecon & representing TEAM at the Big Democracy Project in Llandrindod Wells were both great opportunities to establish new contacts & spark new ideas & debate.

Getting involved in putting together NTW's Strategic plan & being invited to report at Board Meetings has confirmed to me that TEAM really is at the heart of NTW & is an essential part of what National Theatre Wales is. It's refreshing to know that Community is not a box to tick for NTW, it's a cornerstone of the company.

In the coming year I'm really looking forward to continuing to extend the community into Mid Wales, I've started some great conversations with many people up & down the A470 & am excited about what we can achieve...

I’ve just checked the dates & it was exactly 9 months ago to the day (Correct at time of writing!) that I first heard of TEAM. In that short time I’ve attended & been involved in many events & found many new talented collaborators, colleagues & friends. TEAM has had a big effect on me & the work I do, even leading to me now setting up my own TEAM Group – TEAM Choir. “Come & have a sing if you think you’re loud enough!”

I’m really excited that now, as a Panel member I’ll be able to listen to & support others in finding out how TEAM can help them, whatever their endeavours. Also being able to feed back to the wider community that is National Theatre Wales, maintaining & developing NTW's work for & by the people of Wales.

As a part time Brecon Boy, I’m particularly keen in seeing how we can encourage & celebrate the often overlooked or missed artistic delights that go on in the Beacons & Mid Wales in general. If you’re a Mid -Walean do get in touch with me. I’d love to hear more of what’s going on… & what could go on!

Thank you for having me TEAM. Here’s to a smashing year!

Right, I'm off to get the obligatory TEAM Logo tattoo now on my neck. Lilac or Orange though... not sure, maybe lilac will work better with my skin tone...

Greetings from the rehearsal room of "What's the Time, Mr. Wolf?" (Ahem, quick plug - Porter's Bar, Cardiff, 14/15&17th July, 7pm ;)

This has been a whole new adventure for me. I've performed this show MANY times over the last couple of years, getting ever more comfortable with his ways & motivations etc. So it has been fascinating to get into a rehearsal room to re-rehearse for this year's shows with a totally new Director.

Working with Lisa Wells-Turner is proving to be even more fruitful than I anticipated. There's nothing like a fresh pair of eyes & ears to question the, let's face it,routines of interpretations that one can get into when performing the same piece over a long period of time. Lisa has been fantastic at challenging my assumptions about the character, helping me to dig deeper into who he is & spending time working with me on the aspects of him where maybe I hadn't explored all the options.

We're heading for an end result where somethings have altered, others remain, but with a greater understanding & confidence in the descisions taken.

I could've re-rehearsed this piece on my own & put on a good show. I'm very glad I've chosen to work with Lisa instead. We've got a show that's refreshed, more alive than ever &, if I was excited about showing this work to Cardiff before, now I really can't wait to share it.

Prompted by a conversation with Simon Coates whilst hiding out in the trenches in Usk last friday (As an aside, if you're thinking of going to see Mametz, go. You won't regret it) I'm now writing my first ever blog.

There is an angle to this, of course, I'm promoting a show. But, within that, I'm liking the idea of doing so less formally & I feel I can skirt around the subject too this way (Or do I mean ramble?).

The show in question is "What's the Time, Mr Wolf?". By the time you get to the bottom of the page I will have worked out how to attach the flyer for it. I've taken this show out on the road the last two summers. We've taken in the delights of London, Brighton & Bristol to name but three places. This year I'm very excited as I've recently made Wales my permanent home & will be performing the show as part of the Cardiff Comedy Festival.

I'm looking at this set of shows as my Hello to Cardiff, a kind of setting out my stall & showing people what I do.

In the six months since I first knocked on NTW's door, I've made more connections, started more projects & received more help & encouragement than I had in ten years of living in London. On top of all the projects so far, I'm delighted to have been chosen to attend Summercamp too.

There's great work going on in Wales & I'm very happy to be part of it.

So, allow me to show you what I do, I'm looking forward to seeing other people's work this summer too. Who knows who'll meet & what ideas will come to frutition.

Thanks for reading,

I’m looking for a Director to help me rehearse a one man show I’m performing at this year’s Cardiff Comedy Festival.

The Show
“Conrad Kordover is a man with strange habits; a loner, living by his own unconventional beliefs. When a murder is committed, it isn’t long before the Police come knocking.”
“What’s the Time, Mr Wolf?” by Vincent Cassar. A darkly comic one man play exploring a society where justice must be done, whatever the price. A piece that is more relevant than ever in our current climate. How much is “Trial by Media” affecting the decisions of our Justice system?

Key Dates
The show is currently booked for 3 nights at Porter’s, Cardiff as part of the Cardiff Comedy Festival. The dates are 14th, 15th & 17th July.
I’m looking to rehearse in the two weeks preceding the 14th, probably in Cardiff, exact dates, times venue to be worked out once Director on board. There’s some flexibility on this, depending on the route taken with Director.

You
The show is an intimate, Character driven piece; perfect for small spaces (plays50 seat venues) It’s both comedic & disturbing with a strong message about prejudice, media & Justice. A Director with a passion & experience of this kind of work & who enjoys working with Writers would be most welcome. Although this is an existing production, we are happy & keen to keep developing the piece & are open to new ideas.

Us
I’ve taken the show on two tours in the last couple of years, garnering great feedback & reviews. The show was previously Directed & Designed with Festivals in mind. In fact, the current set/props & costume all fit into a medium sized suitcase! The future direction of the show is up for discussion. The Writer is actively involved & we’re also looking at options for filming the piece in the near future.

Cold hard cash
I’ve got to get straight in there & say there’s no guaranteed fee. This production currently has no budget. On the plus side that means the money made on tickets will be all profit, which will be shared between us.

Further info
There’s a Facebook page for the show which includes reviews etc:

Intrigued? Send me an email expressing your interest & feel free to ask questions. I’ll send you the script then we can chat in more detail about the project.
