TEAM's Year 2 of activity has now been running for the last 6 months in Pembrokeshire and what a 6 months it has been!

We have been been working with communities around the county supporting local groups and individuals with a variety of different events and activities.

We have held a workshop at the POINT youth centre in Fishguard, giving the children the chance to become creative and working with local artist Pip Lewis. There they made fish masks and held a procession through the streets of Fishguard ending at the cannons overlooking Lower Town. During the process we were able to generate conversations with the children about what their local environment meant to them.

During a National Trust event, Festival of the Sea, NTW TEAM provided a children's show telling the tale of Cantre Gwaelod, the story of the sea rising up and flooding a town because the villagers were too busy partying and having a good time to notice the oncoming storm; a story which in today's climate crisis is more relevant then ever. This was a collaborative piece which involved local artists from Pembrokeshire, TEAM Panel members Angharad Price, Tom Mallitte, local poet Kerry Steed and Naomi Chiffi. The piece used elements of clowning, storytelling, music and audience interaction from the children.

The third piece involved working with Pembroke based charity POD (Pembroke Open Doors) who support refugee families who have moved to the area. I got to meet and speak with these families, they were all so welcoming and together we came up with the idea of supporting them at an event which they were holding for National Refugee Week. Leading up to the event we recorded the stories of two of the volunteers of POD and one of the families who told us about the impact that the war has had on the environment & landscape of Syria and the journey which they took to Pembroke. At the event the families provided a delicious mix of Middle Eastern food and we provided a map of the of the world and asked the attendees to share their journey to Pembroke. This generated some great conversations with individuals about where they came from and their homelands. What amazed me most was the diverse community that was there who wanted to share their stories.

As part of the Fly the Flag initiative, celebrating the 70 years of the signing of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, TEAM Panel members created short films in collaboration with Donmar Warehouse, where they spoke about human rights and what this means to them. Film maker Jack Abbott worked with Year 7 at Greenhill School, Tenby, where the children wrote, directed and starred in their own film around the issues of human rights. In Manorbier the choir originally formed by NTW TEAM for our Tenby production, Tide Whisperer, created their own flag which was flown over the castle whilst the official flag designed by Ai WeiWei was flown over Pembroke Castle. Check out all of this activity on the NTW website.

On 4th July we had a brilliant night at The Druidstone Hotel for our NTW TEAM Open Mic night with Span Arts. Such a wide variety of super-talented acts, all in celebration of the environment & what a perfect sunset to top it all off too! Thank you so much to all involved.

So, what will be happening in the next half of the year?

We will continue to work with individuals and community groups within Pembrokeshire, around the themes of climate change, the environment and nature. We will explore the effect that the environment has on us, how we use it and what it means to us as a community, which, whilst disparate, is linked through our collective appreciation of the beauty of the environment around us. Pembrokeshire as a whole is intrinsically linked with care of and respect for the environment, which is why you have chosen next year's NTW TEAM show to be based around these themes, the beneficial effects the environment can have on our physical and mental health and how we must endeavour to protect it.

Throughout the year we will we will be holding more events and training in order to support the artistic community of Pembrokeshire and spread the word of TEAM creating a legacy of performance, theatre and the arts as a whole within the county.

ON Wednesday of this week, we worked in Fishguard in Pembrokeshire with The Point youth centre, delivering a workshop to the young people which got them thinking about their own well being and what it means to them to live in a small coastal town. The session was led by local artist Pip Lewis from Space to create who taught the children to create their own fish head masks.

To begin with we had a group of four boys come in, this is when we got a bit worried about our numbers and whether we would have enough to run a good workshop, but as the afternoon went on more and more started to show up until we had a room full all creating their own unique fish. Throughout this we were able to have conversation with the children about their local area and how the sea plays into their life. One of the Points aims is to support the children's emotional well being so we spoke about the concept of masks and what role they play in day to day lives. We then asked the children to write down any worries they may have inside the mask as a way to realise them and hopefully get them to open up and talk about them.

After a delicious lunch of spaghetti prepared by one of the children at the Point we took to the streets of Fishguard wearing our Fish heads. We walked through the town to an area know as the cannons, a site with two Napoleonic cannons overlooking the iconic fishing village of Lower Town where the original Under Milk Wood was filmed. Here we we photographed them with their fish heads and were even able to get some local teenagers involved who were just hanging around.

The final part of the day we recorded interviews with the children asking them all bout what the local issues were and how the sea played a part in their lives. This generated some really interesting conversations about social isolation and what its living right at the edge of the country in an area that is right on the forefront of climate change and environmental issues, as the whole culture of the town is tied up with the sea, tourism, ferry port, beaches and fishing.

A big thank you to everyone involved, in particular The Point, the staff who supported us and the children who were all fantastic. I look forward to working with them again in the future.
Pembrokeshire TEAM associatetag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2019-02-15:3152760:BlogPost:2822922019-02-15T09:52:50.000ZOwain Roachhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/OwainRoach

Pembs has a rich history performance and theatre and there is definitely an audience from all ages and backgrounds who want to be involved more. The problem we face is that as a rural county there is a big divide between the north and the south, divided by geography and language. My aim is to build links between these communities through creative opportunities, promoting bilingualism and seeing what one can learn from the other.

If anyone form Pembs would like to be involved please feel free to contact me.

Exciting times ahead!

The Eastend Flyover Company is delighted to announce that tickets are now on sale for their next production, ‘A Grimmer Tale’, based on the stories of the Brothers Grimm. The play is an original piece written by local storyteller Owain Roach, scriptwriter Naomi Chiffi and Flyover Chairperson Angharad Scourfield. Following on last year’s successful, sell-out production of Private Peaceful, the Flyover is very excited about working collaboratively with pupils and staff at Castle School, Cresselly, many of whom are contributing to the show both on and off stage.
With original music from local harpist Jess Ward and Welsh folk band Estron, the show looks to be an exciting event not only for theatre-goers but also for fans of Pembrokeshire's wonderful live music scene. The play will be staged at the magical Penquoit Centre in Lawrenny and audience members are invited to bring along a blanket and a bottle – this is not your average night at the theatre!
The play runs from Monday 6th July to Wednesday 8th July at 7:30 pm; tickets are now available at a cost of £7.50 or £5.00 concessions and can be purchased at Main Street Music, Pembroke, Cwtch Café, Pembroke Dock and Tenby Bookshop.West Wales TEAM eventtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2013-05-08:3152760:BlogPost:1560752013-05-08T19:30:59.000ZOwain Roachhttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/OwainRoach

As part of the TEAM events the evening saw a full host of acts from storytelling to clowning with some music thrown in for good measure. There was also work by local artist Sophie Wordsworth as part of the Spirit of enterprise gallery. The evening began with local storytellers telling tales about their childhood and classic stories. The stage was then overtaken by a clown who proceeded to attempt to impress the ladies in the audience, sadly to no avail. The remainder of the evening concluded with more stories, songs and poems, with local musician John Roach finishing off the night with some folk and blues numbers.

A big thank you to all those people who came along and supported. 'Home is.....' will continue into the New Year so hope to see you all there.
