Made In China

We tell stories to make sense of our lives. We fictionalise our experiences, package them and present them to others as our truth, all without thinking. Our relationships come with their own origin myths and cautionary tales.

Truth and fiction, like lovers, intertwine in Made In China’s latest production. Presented somewhere in between the worlds of play and live-art, styles clash for control of the narrative between Latowicki’s performance and Cowbury’s text.

Those with experience of creating as a couple will find their own stories within the production’s layers, but this does always feels like a fictionalised version of their relationship. We never truly feel like we’re peering voyeuristically in to their lives; this argument has been on tour for a while now.

Why do we care about this couple then? Latowicki struggles in her acts of physical endurance, her “dances”, but we never actually fear for her safety. Cowbury too is safe. He has written his own heroic death scene, but we know that it’s a fiction. He watches it performed every night. The piece moves from one narrative voice to another constantly shifting and searching for it’s authenticity.

Conversely, the production finds its truth in the fiction. As Latowicki movingly delivers her partner’s eulogy; the eulogy for the man sitting in the tech box, we finally see her truth. Her true pain, her true fear of the mortality of the man she loves.

In Made In China’s interesting experiment on authorship, we’re affirmed that sometimes, stories can be a lot more true than real life.
The Drowned Girl, Critical Chinwagtag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2015-10-15:3152760:BlogPost:2370462015-10-15T14:29:28.000ZJac Ifan Moorehttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/JacIfanMoore

There is a universality in The Drowned Girl, Kelly Jones' personal tribute to her grandmother. The hour long monolog, seemingly written from her younger self, is peppered with pop culture references, supermarket isle clashes and cornflakes. One of Jones' strengths as a playwright is tapping in to these cultural memories, using these shared experiences as anchors for audience members; dead end jobs, gossiping neighbours et al.

Presented simply, this was storytelling theatre, with the focus very much on telling the audience over showing us. For my own tastes, some visual distinctions between sequences would have aided me in illustrating the narrative. There is further work too to be explored with the inclusion of the technician on stage as an interactive party. Though this is an interesting idea, I was unable to find justification for his presence.

That being said, the piece is distinctive in it's voice, and Jones weaves a story that connects to us all.
New North Stars WalesLab: Day 10tag:community.nationaltheatrewales.org,2015-07-30:3152760:BlogPost:2317772015-07-30T13:19:59.000ZJac Ifan Moorehttps://community.nationaltheatrewales.org/profile/JacIfanMoore

And we successfully erected a bell-tent!

Yet to be tested in great Welsh weather.

A daunting journey, fraught with dangers, failures, and guanacos. Our one-and-a-bit weeks in 2015 Splott hardly compare.

They worked for survival. We work to remember. Their tools were clever women with irrigation systems, and a generous native people. Ours are performance, music, and a great big warehouse in Abercwmboi.

But we’ve made strides of our own, as we try to make sense of this remarkable story of pipe-dreams, struggles, conflicts and kindness. As we hit the half way mark of rehearsals - which have thankfully been more fertile than our subject matter once was - I find myself exited by the scale of the thing.

Doing ‘whatever it takes to support your art’ is a great way to end an ideastap blog but when you’re working six or seven nights a week to support a few hours’ rehearsal towards no gig in particular, you can start to forget. Your head is down, grinding, and you rarely get the chance to look up; to do the thing your supposedly supporting and take stock.

Summercamp can do stock-takes.

Did the weather help? Hell yes.
