Dylan Moore on A Good Night Out

The choice of first show for a brand new national theatre company is necessarily a political one. For a non-building based company like National Theatre Wales, the venue also assumes extra

significance. With an opening performance called A Good Night Out In The

Valleys touring miners’ institutes and workmens’ halls, Artistic Director John

E McGrath has very deliberately planted the National Theatre flag in…

Olivier Award Winning Iwan Rheon comes to NTW

How excited we are at NTW this morning - Iwan Rheon won an Olivier Award last night for his brilliance in the musical Spring Awakening (well done to Aneurin too). Next Monday he starts rehearsals with us playing Huw in our production of John Osborne's THE DEVIL INSIDE HIM. The rest of the cast are Jamie Ballard, John Cording, Stephen Elliott, Helen Griffin, Derek Hutchinson, Rachel Lumberg and Catrin Stewart. It runs at the New Theatre in Cardiff from May 6-15th.… Continue

Day 21 - Lethargy and Lists - On a Treadmill Aberystwyth

A weird kind of lethargy has been overtaking me recently. These last two days at least. Something to do with nights becoming confused with days and the lots and lots of travelling during the last two weeks. There is more to come next week. I will be going to Gregynog near Newtown for a University conference. I am going to speak for 5 minutes about the project. What to say?!?! And on Thurday Carl and I are going to go the…

Day 20 - Frog Day Afternoon - On the Roads of Mid Wales

Poppy and I swam again today. We accidentally crashed a children's birthday party in the pool. I think we both realised after about half an hour and chose not to share the information with one another for fear that one or the other might make us leave and swim in the colder water of the Plas Crug main pool. We bought chocolate chip muffins and made a mushroom soup. The days are now much brighter and sharper and the…

Another tidy night in Ponty

It was great to go and see 'A Good Night Out' last night in Pontardawe. Having been involved in the rehearsal process, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the end product in all its warm & tender glory, - it brought a tear to my eye and gave me belly laughs by turn. I was very impressed by the extra dimensions brought by the superb audio visuals, Mike Beers sound design, the great band (see you in the Uplands boys), and by Boyds beige budgie smugglers... Nice to see some of my own bits and bobs…

Day 19 - Poppy - My House

Sometimes it's important to remember why we do the things we do. All the miles that we travel. All the people we meet and all the tricky situations that we negotiate. Sometimes it's important to stop and think about these things because there is a very real chance that tomorrow, these things won't be there and we will have missed something important. I am humbled by this thought and realise, at the end of this week of searching, that sometimes what you are looking for is right there.… Continue

First Choice Dewis Cyntaf New Project

While all you clever National Theatre people have been slogging to get your first production out (what a night!) and others on the way, we've been racing insanely round Swansea to set up a new project for young people.

We're busy recruiting staff to start working with us in April, to bring together different ways of working with drama and theatre, with young people aged 16 in Swansea.

We start rolling out workshops in June on the Swansea University campus - and…

Day 18 - My Eyebrows? - The Oriel Davies Gallery Newtown

It turns out that the reason that we didn't meet up with Karl yesterday was because he fell down the side of the Wawel and got run over by a passing car. He is ok...

pontardawe - home of satan

We have now done three of the eight shows and are in Pontardawe for number four. A woman just invited me back to her house to 'worship the dark lord'. I declined. John threw a wobbly this morning when I said that his aftershave smelled like a cheap tart's perfume. He's so sensitive. Alan the writer and John had a bitter set to over the reviews. Alan told John that it's his writing that makes the show and that a monkey could direct it. John called Alan a 'deluded slap head' and they had a brief… Continue

Day 17 - Losing Karl - Home at last

We lost Karl at the Wawel. He ran ahead to set up the crowning shot of his film and we didn't see him again. We were only moments behind him. We searched the Wawel and in the end we had to jump in a taxi and head to the airport. Hopefully he didn't wait too long. It feels like the fitting end to a film. A metaphor for his struggle to save Krakow.…
