Young Critic's Review - A Provincial Life

A Provincial Life

National Theatre Wales

Sherman Cymru

Stars ***

National Theatre Wales have once again worked their magic to bring legendary director Peter Gill back to his home city of Cardiff to direct for the very first time. This re-working of Gill’s 1966 adaptation of Chekov’s short story gently tells the tale of Misail (Nicholas Shaw), a bourgeois young man, who wants to labour for his bread despite his…

Young Critics Review - A Provincial Life

A PROVINCIAL LIFE

Written and Directed by: Peter Gill

Sherman Cymru - Thu 01 Mar 2012 - Sat 17 Mar 2012

A blue light shining on a solitary figure, against a back drop of 40ft high pine sections gave us the first glimpse of the blank platform from which NTW would tell the long, slightly erratic story of a young, wealthy man in 1890s Russia. Against his father's wishes, Misail (Nicholas Shaw) decides to pursue happiness and worth by living the Provincial Life of a manual… Continue

Fusion Inspire & International Women's Day

Am off to New Quay Beach West Wales this afternoon to watch the full moon rise with a gathering of kindreds around a camp fire;  the tide will rush in to join our celebrations for International Women's Day, the wind will carry our song into the night and thank those who have come before us for making us strong enough to continue to make in-roads for those ahead of us ...

I'm going to film the moon rising, the tide and the bonfire to use as part of the projection visuals for…

Trip up to Birmingham (thought I had put this up but obviously hadn't so its a bit late)

Last month with the support of national theatre Wales I was able to travel up to Birmingham to be able to perform at “Speak Up” an event run by Jodi Ann Bickley. A person who it would be pretty safe to say is one of the reasons I got into writing and performing spoken word.

So I set off looking forward to a long day of trains, but all the time I thought I would use to practise my poems seemed to fade fast as all I could think about is how much of a step up this would be for me as a…

A literary gathering in an informal setting, the Uplands Literary Salon sees top writers read or perform their work, and discuss their practice with 'notable bohemian' Susie Wild. Questions are then opened up to the audience for discussion and good conversation. After the talk the revellers can enjoy the relaxed, informed but informal environment to meet with publishers, writers, agents and fellow book lovers to discuss writing, culture and ideas. The Village Social review

You may wonder how the advertised raffle, clairvoyant and ‘orgy of blood’ would come together in National Theatre Wales’s first musical. I must say I was apprehensive to see how these seemingly haphazard activities would complement each other harmoniously.

But harmony is what I got. Every cast member sung with such preciseness, yet succeeded in preserving a roughness in the finished product. This complimented the performance of ostensibly innocent, ‘normal’ residents of Cae…

'A Provincial Life' is well underway... and I am just having the time of my life :)

Hello there! Haven't blogged in a while; I apologise!

Since my last blog, we have rehearsed as an ensemble, taken trips up to London for costume fittings, arrived at the Sherman Theatre, entered a rehearsal room full of so many props that I had to blink a few times, got on stage for the longest tech run ever and opened the show!

Rehearsals have been a-maz-ing. Extremely long, but extremely worth it! As the youngest in the cast I suddenly feel so new to this, but I am genuinely… Continue

To create a one man show about a politician who has been dead for 67 years that is still relevant to a modern audience would be a challenge to any writer or director. Thankfully D.J. Britton took David Lloyd George as his inspiration; the only Welsh speaking prime minister (although he was born in Manchester)…

A provicial life

Wow do I feel like the country cousin now! I've been living in the sticks too long--how else do you explain why I was counting the number of people on stage on Friday night at the marvelous production of "A provincial life" at the Sherman-- I'm used to touring theatre where the actors  / scenery shifters/ technicians are one and the same & all have to fit in a single transit van with the props-- It took a while to realise that Friday nights production was not going to up sticks and…
