What will be different now?

I wrote a blog post for the EFA Festival Bytes blog about my Atelier experience, asking myself (and others) 23 key questions that we've explored. http://www.festivalbytes.eu/what-will-be-different-now/

I can't recommend the week-long residential enough - if you work on/ in/ for festivals, do seek out the next editions and ask ACW or your employer to give you some training monies to attend! Next one is at…

WalesLab Day Five

Anticipation, excitement, fear.

The taste of sea salt on my lips as I speak. Sand beneath my toes grounding me to this place, this moment.

And John McGrath tap dancing with my daughter in my mum's living…

WalesLab Day Four

And with Louise comes a renewed sense of agency, energy and motivation. An outside eye bringing supportive, loving critical criticism.

I am in awe of the way that she she is able to take my ramblings and turn them into concrete, tangible objects. To hear my vague words and offer up sound, lighting, action, set design.

And I am chuffed to bits when she tells me she likes my writing.…

The Woman in the Wall

Recife is full of Stories. Walking around the city with any of the locals and you're absorbed by them, attracted to their charm and their sense of place.

Most of the stories are located in a place within the city, for example there's this plaque (pictured above) which tells the story of an old beggar woman who died recently, they say that she was secretly…

WalesLab Day Three

I wish I could bottle this feeling. I wish that I could articulate the fragility of this moment. Spending time with you is exhausting, baffling, frustrating. But so, so exhilarating. I see the world through your eyes and drop my inhibitions - become a seahorse, a kite, a jellyfish. You have a freedom that I lost long ago. I wish that I…

WalesLab Day Two

in this dying town

where are the dead kept?

Today I have had an overwhelming sense of history smothering the present. Of recriminations and accusations holding back the young. Of long held grudges being clung to as the barnacle clings to the hull of a boat.

People here remember. The past is a living, breathing animal, snarling in…

Festival Atelier Edinburgh - "architects of impact"

We have had some incredible moments of dialogue and debate, with some wonderful mentors, most notably Heiner Goebbels about Ruhrtrienniale and Mark Ball about LIFT. I guess when there are 52 participants from 28 countries all talking festivals festivals festivals, then basically anything can happen and it has. We've also done some amazing site…

My new job with NTW.

Almost exactly a year ago I started falling in love with National Theatre Wales when I began working as Emerging Director on Praxis Makes Perfect. The project was innovative and ambitious; the process was hard work, sometimes a little chaotic but illuminating, inspiring and so much fun.…  my experience on Praxis characterises NTW, for me, and in the last year I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with the company in a few different capacities; from Summercamp on sunny Anglesey, to…
