Day 133 - Tynllidiart Arms - Capel Bangor

Excellent service... shame about the vegetarian lasagne...

If you are vegetarian, which I am not, it can be very difficult to find a place that serves a vegetarian Sunday lunch. In and around Aberystwyth that is. Which for the vegetarians out there I imagine is a little bit annoying and indicates a lack of empathy on the part of the establishment that you are eating in. As far as I can tell, vegetarians have to choose variously between vegetarian lasagne, mushroom…

Day 132 - More Camping - Furnace

I have had quite enough of camping following my trip to Barmouth, so I am sure that you can imagine that Poppy's request to dig the tent out again so quickly is falling on somewhat deliberately deaf ears. It is my friends birthday and he is having a party in Furnace. Which, while not as far as Barmouth, currently feels like it is a very long, long way away. However, she did get an outstanding school report yesterday and she did go to karate for the second time, this morning, even though… Continue

Day 131 - Back to Aberystwyth by Train - Five minutes from Barmouth

When I arrived in Barmouth a number of people asked whether I would be walking back to Aberystwyth. 'Of course not' I thought, and said. It's not that I couldn't see the logic in this proposition, it was more that the thought of retracing my steps filled me with dread. That same journey that had been filled with so much adventure because of the motivation provided by the destination and the Barmouth show were gone. Places of concrete experience had been created, and that was of course… Continue

Romeo and Juliet- rehearsals in the forest in West Wales

Well, we have just finished our first 4 days of rehearsals in the woods down at The Stackpole Centre in Pembrokeshire. The cast assembled in Cardiff on Monday for some fantastic training with Maggie from Disability Arts Cymru (thank you so much, Maggie!)

Already, the performance is starting to take vague shape, and yesterday we "staggered through" Act I... amazing!! The cast are reaching new heights already and the music is sounding beautiful. There is something so much more moving…

The National Theatre of Ish!

As some of you know, I was in Kosovo recently at an event exploring theatre in places of conflict, and the role of National Theatres. I met some great people with exciting things to say, from all over the world. One of the presentations was by Alison Jeffers, a theatre academic originally from Belfast. She talked about what a National Theatre could mean when you are not quite from any one place - not quite British, not quite Irish. She compared her cultural experience with that of the 15… Continue

Bring on Barmouth Assembly

Bore da!

After a more than hearty breakfast overlooking the point where mountains meet sea, I'm ready for the busy run-up to the fourth assembly.

Rehearsals at the Bath House last night were simply amazing. I've heard rich soulful singing, listened to some incredible Barmouth-centric lyrics and seen the early stages of the video-game film. Can't wait for the discussions and guests, where the whole thing will come together... I'm fully confident that my first assembly will be a good… Continue

Casting for NTW05 The Beach

Last week we had three casting sessions to try and find two actors for our 5th production, THE BEACH.

We saw actors in separate sessions in Prestatyn, Cardiff and London. Leading the session were Bethan Marlow (one of the three artists who is making THE BEACH), Sam Jones (our casting director), Lucy Taylor (Sam's assistant) and me. We saw actors in small groups and asked each actor to bring a game with them to share.

By Friday I had pretended to…

My first ever blog!

Hello everyone.

I feel somewhat of a dinosaur given that this is my first ever blog. I'm not one for embracing technology too easily, always thinking it's beyond me and then once I try it, realizing its not so bad after all. So this is my try-out, but what to put in it?

There's been a lot to think about since meeting some of the artists involved in Soul Exchange on Saturday in Manchester. Lots of words and pictures in my head but how it will all…

Death and the Monster - Chapter Arts Centre 25th June 2010

For their eagerly awaited 2nd production "Inky Quill productions" found themselves in the impressive surroundings of the Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff.

Local comic Dan Mitchell set the tone with a short set which got a packed audience laughing constantly. Making it clear that he wasn't the play he won the crowd over with strong material from his life, " Specileptic" perfectly summing up his eye-sight and medical…
