on writing, on performance

I've begin to blog about process, theatre and performance... The next 12 months promise to be pretty wild, with 4 productions of my work, all very different in style, aesthetic, context and content, so I've set myself the task to reflect on this experience - what I think, what I learn, what I question...

Cilgwyn Production Interns

Cilgwyn are looking for 2 production interns to work with us on our new project The Belly of the Whale.

About the project: Taking inspiration from recent events in Chile and New Zealand and from the Gresford mining disaster of 1934 The Belly of the Whale will explore what happens when the human mind is left to ponder its last moments. Do you replay the best moment of your life over and over? Do you look for forgiveness? Do you seek justice? Do you try to find hope in the…

Another 5* review for The Dark Philosophers

"This whole production by Told By An Idiot and National Theatre Wales is a triumph," says Fest magazine, the latest to give the production a 5* rating.

"From its magical stage design to the giddy use of absurd theatrical techniques, everything is in harmony with Thomas' world-view."

You can see some audience members' reactions in a seres of videos on…

Back to Caernarfon

Comrades,

At the beginning of the week I went to Caernarfon with Abdul to see the wonderful people of Galeri and record Jason84 and Dion Jones who have been jamming together since Caernarfon Assembly last January.

We had a great day, Dion, Jason, Dylan and the rest of the crew recorded 4 songs.

Here are 2 of them.

NB: If your neck hurts, please remember when I was making good video and be compassionate…

Bandwagon Theatre: Our Edinburgh Fringe (Day 10)

Before I begin, I want to make it clear that I'm in the middle of some celebrating.

It's our last night - I can't believe it. So we're all having a last little gathering and will be visiting some local establishments later on this evening.

I suppose as it's the last night I should start summing up our time here, but putting all of our experiences into just a few lines is near impossible. I've learnt plenty, not only about the Fringe but about the people I'm here with, Edinburgh… Continue

Congratulations to Laura Free, our 3,000th Member

It's just over 2 years since we set up our online community at National Theatre Wales and yesterday we passed the benchmark of 3,000 members.  Congratulations to Laura Free our 3,00th member.

Laura, the prize for you is quite special.  We have commissioned a limited edition set of love spoons to be made from the cross that featured in our production of The Passion.  Each spoon will be individually carved and should be a real collector's item.  To claim your prize, contact…

Bandwagon Theatre: Our Edinburgh Fringe (Day 9)

Another show, another day gone in the blink of an eye.

We've literally just realised that we've been living in near luxury for the past 9 days. The 7 of us have been sharing a modern, clean, fully functioning apartment and we've even had our own beds. Amazingly, we hadn't been aware of just how fortunate we are to be in such a comfortable residence. We just had a rather long conversation with another company who are at our venue, and they asked us whether we felt the same way as they… Continue

iPads, Squashed Tomatoes and Justin Timberlake... just another day in Edinburgh

… it turns out Lyn Gardner's recommendations are really worth something. My last day in Edinburgh was spent participating in Alma Mater and viewing I Hope My Heart Goes First. What a wonderful way to end my time at the Fringe.

Alma Mater ★★★ is a one-person journey into a child's imagination, powered by an iPad. Looking at the video on the tablet as you would the…

This Imaginary Woman

Next week as part of the Magdalena project celebrations ‘Magdalena@25’ I will be revisiting a show I made with Volcano  almost ten years ago – ‘This Imaginary Woman’. The subject of the show is my mother- about her bringing up 5 kids on her own, her illness with Multiple Sclerosis, her death in 1996 – she is this imaginary woman. The show was created as a ‘song cycle’ in the vein of a Berlinesque ‘Kurt Weil’ type cabaret with influences…

Bandwagon Theatre: Our Edinburgh Fringe (Day 8)

First of all - good news, no nightmares.

Unfortunately, Edinburgh's heat wave came and went in two days and so it's back to usual working conditions; rain, rain and more rain. Not excellent news but our newly evolved webbed feet have come in handy and traipsing around Edinburgh handing out flyers is no longer a major challenge. It seems that the general public were slightly deterred by the weather today though, resulting in minimal audience numbers and somebody else's show at our… Continue

Paper Boats, Booby-Trapped Umbrellas and a Pile of Old Wardrobes... just another day in Edinburgh

If it is true that 'nothing succeeds like excess', then Brent and I have had a very successful few days indeed. Seeing up to six shows a day as well as a far from quantifiable load of street theatre, we've absolutely binged on the stuff... and I'm starting to feel a little full. While I'm still enjoying myself to the core, it must be said that it's starting to take a lot to impress me. Beware, Cardiff. I'm going to be a much less forgiving critic when I return.…

Bandwagon Theatre: Our Edinburgh Fringe (Day 7)

Today was a strange day. It began as usual, with our show at half 12 as it is every day. It ended rather unusually, with a ghost tour through a graveyard and we've only just got in.

The show went fairly well and we had a great audience today, all giving us some good feedback and plenty of compliments as we left the studio - I'm hoping they'll spread the word and maybe we'll pull in some extra audience members through word of mouth. Fingers crossed.

After the show we decided to… Continue
