Sad news coming out that one of Britain's most influential women playwrights of the past sixty years has died.
Her well known play A Taste of Honey played on Broadway and in the West End before being made into an award winning film directed by Tony Richardson with wonderful performances from Dora Bryan, Rita Tushingham and Murray Melvin.
The play and film had a tremendous impact and resonance at the time- a beautiful tender story featuring a young woman falling pregnant, being…

The city all brings it back into the right proportion. I am big and the countryside is small. I am cool and we should all save some water. Birmingham indeed has the best water of the world, it is the only water there is.
Before I go all crazy and say stupid things I would like to say thanks to Welsh Water, Severn Trent Water, Canon Hill Park, Elan Valley Trust…

Thanks to Wales Lab I'm getting the chance to explore ideas for a show I want to make on board a barry bus. Over the weekend me and poet, grahame davies have been circling Barry on the no 95, taking in the sights and sounds from Dow Corning to Jackson's Bay, chatting to fellow passengers and scribbling.
Tomorrow, and for the next few days, I'll be on the buses with actors Joanna Griffiths and Ollie Wood exploring characters and improvising with poetic fragments collected by Grahame.…

Hello all. Sorry not to have posted for so long but I've been on a secret government assignment in the former soviet union and I got caught, imprisoned and tortured. I escaped by covering my body in rat urine, attaching feathers from my duck down matress and convincing them I was a chicken. They sure are dumb these commies (ex commies). Anyway, working on a thing with the NTW, coming along! Also I have a CD - 'Labourer of Love' - coming out in time for christmas. Its a lovely poiece of…

...and slightly less of a tangent:
A couple of rebuilt sections of the web archive are back online - still developing, and just as informal as ever, but hopefully a little easier to navigate - and a new set of 25 performance stills from the opening of 'The Persians' have been added to archive #2 - courtesy of the camera, and eye, of Simon…

At the risk that these periodic fragments may seem increasingly like a series of tangents, I have just posted a selection of police cctv surveillance footage from work that Mike Pearson, Ed Thomas and I were doing together in Cardiff, back in the autumn of 2002 [ less than fragments, post title standing still in…

Going from a silent grey sunday morning in Rhayader into the crazy shopping scene in the center of Birmingham. And I went thru the fog so there was nothing in between. So many people!! And then the day continues with doors and streets and phones and a nice diner with music. Did someone really say that there was nothing to see in Rhayader but just a couple of houses and a B&B? Please, I need another glass of water otherwise I will faint!! (greetings from Katie to Matt and John!)…

Originally this next blog was meant to be a review of Theatr Na n’og’s Welsh language production of ‘Salsa’, but after the performance, I couldn’t quite bring myself to write about it. I’m not saying it was all bad. For what it was it was perfectly enjoyable, if the thing you enjoy is sexual innuendo and a recurring ‘falling down the stairs’ joke. Which, incidentally I don’t, but each to their own. After feeling slightly disheartened, the next night I went to see Hamlet at the Young…

I'd never had doubts about which way to tell a story until this year. I always knew from the start whether something was going to be a novel, a stageplay, screenplay, or short (both story and film). I know that other people sometimes have a dilemma in choosing which format to tell their story but it's never been a problem for me.
This changed a few months ago (August? September?) when I woke up at stupid o'clock and wrote a short film in an hour and a quarter. Just like…

It was with excitement, anticipation and a little fear that we embarked on the journey of opening the "letters" today.
Our mixed emotions stemmed from the uncertainty of whether the content would live up to our expectations, the excitement of being the first to lay eyes upon those hidden words and an uneasy feeling of…

I first heard of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2010 and liked the idea of committing to writing 50,000 words from November 1st right through to the 30th. So long as I had the research, characterisation etc. done by the first (which might actually have been cheating) it would've been easy enough to plod along through it.
Everything was ready, inspiration was sky high. Started out with a few thousand words on Day 1 just to kick off. A few hundred words on Day…
