Day 93 - Fish and Chips and Happy Birthday Clint - Along the Prom, Aberystwyth

Rimini Protokoll arrived in Aberystwyth for the first time today. At around 9:20pm. I waited for a while in the Shilam, drinking odd tasting Tetleys and reading the Independant. Apparently Clint Eastwood is 80 today (unless of course it was an old copy of the paper). We ended up going for fish and chips before heading to Rummers for a drink. Up early tomorrow. I'm interested to see how they make sense of Aberystwyth, the schedule looks fascinating.

The next ten days…

Day 88 - Publikumsbeschimpfung - Centre For Visual & Performing Arts, Aberystwyth

Don't ask me to say it. I can't. I did just try and failed impressively. The students at the College put on a cracking show. I haven't been back since I left to commence this research project and it was a strange experience. A bit like returning to school after taking time off ill... terrifying…

Day 86 - Watching through my window - My House

It's 11:34 am and I am sat by the front window of my house watching people as they pass by. The shop across the road sells bacon and eggs which I have purchased on a number of occasions. Each time I have the same conversation about the eggs in which I am assured that while they are not called free range they do come from hens that are free range in everything but name. Obviously someone has mislabeled them as there is a 3 printed on the shell in red ink. The box reliably informs me that… Continue

Day 85 - On the road again - Back to Aberystwyth

The journey back to Aber was excruciatingly hot. Ben's Nissan Sunny doesn't have air conditioning and that it goes at all is quite a surprise. Wales is looking extremely green at this time of year. Sheep throwing themselves at wire fences to escape the oncoming traffic are in danger of bouncing right back into the road. They look a whole lot hotter than us, apparently they don't get sheared any more as the wool has no value, instead they are left to scrape it off.

We…

Day 84 - Paddling down the Wye - The River Wye

18 miles doesn't sound like a long way to paddle in a canoe. I can assure you that it is. There were only two stretches of water that seemed to be moving, the rest of it was like raking gravel. The Sun was unrelenting so I covered myself in factor thirty and tied a shirt around my head. Harry and I managed to avoid sinking more than once. We had just tried to release the stag's boat into the river but hadn't managed to get away ourselves before our boat was over turned and my flip flops… Continue

Day 83 - Wye Aye Man - Hay

I'm off to Hay to stalk the festival and figure out how the land lies. Last time I was there I was shouting obscenely from behind a microphone at a crowd of Wedding guests. This weekend I will be paddling down the river in pursuit of another friend, pre-wedding. I imagine it will end in tears. His not mine. Though actually quite probably mine too.

Fingers crossed there is space at the talk in Hay next weekend. Still waiting to hear back from John and Lucy on that…

Day 82 - Standing Very Still on Screen - Nant y Moch (well almost)

Sam brought the current edit of the Welsh Landscape work around last night. The images look great but the piece doesn't hang together conceptually. We need to find a way to tighten it up. Looks like its going to involve another 15 hours of standing very still. Thankfully its getting sunny now.

Its time for me to give it a go somewhere else... eventually at the locations for NTW. The images are incredibly pensive. They speak volumes about the places without actively…

Day 79 - Standing by the Lake - Nant Y Moch

It all ended at about 3am with Sam brandishing a replica revolver and me hiding under the table why he shouted something about god knows what. Up to that point we had been quite productive. At least in the planning process.

We managed to collect documentation of 3 more landscapes. And hour and a half of standing by a lake. Or in Sam's case half an hour of standing and half 15 minutes of bouncing up and down.

I remember the sound of the car…

Day 78 - Running Away - Up on the hill again, Aberystwyth

Despite being very late to bed I managed to extricate my-self from my nest and throw my body into an athletic encounter with constitution hill.

I passed a number of revelers from the night before who looked impressed by my commitment to traveling along the sea front quite quickly. Hundreds of women in pink covered the prom. Either in preparation for, or after, the race for life. Life boats bounced across the waves and for a moment I was fooled into thinking that…
