Learning through collaboration between Ballet Cymru and Citrus Arts on “Cinderella”

When Darius James and Amy Doughty of Ballet Cymru approached co-artistic director Bridie Doyle & I with a proposal to work together on their current touring production of the Grimms’ original “Cinderella” tale, we were all on the same page within the first few minutes – there were to be no bolt-on circus acts added to the ‘big numbers’ just to fill a space above…

“Take Your Seats!” - The Radicalisation of the Southbank and Emerging Directors (watch the video)

Earlier this year I was asked by Circus Space to direct their ensemble graduation show to be performed at the Royal National Theatre’s ‘Watch This Space’ stage on London’s Southbank. When I accepted, I had a lot of ideas that were rooted in Citrus Arts’ work with Wales-based director Philip Mackenzie; and wanted the students to feel that they were performing something sharp and political-looking that represented something about our times.

In between accepting the job and arriving at…

Fire Drawing in Newport - with Walk The Plank & Citrus Arts

Here's a great learning experience for artists: How to make an ENORMOUS fire drawing which will be suspended from a crane above the River Usk in Newport, with help from the UK's top pyro artists Walk The Plank. It's a volunteer opportunity but you will be well looked after and you will learn a lot from a great team.

This is a photo of their work.

Cwtch Cabaret 1st tour

It would be rude to only use this artistic community

resource purely for self-promotion so, in the spirit of our community; I’m

going to start a blog about how Citrus Arts are testing our-selves in unknown

territories.

In 3 sleeps we’ll be meeting a team of international

artists to set out on a tour of Wales. The project is Cwtch Cabaret, which

hopes to replicate the success of variety shows like London & Edinburgh’s

“La Clique” & “La Soiree”…

Shadow Warriors – Devising in the Dark

Our team of ex-miners know

their own historic pathways out of the dark. How might an audience find their

own way into the dark and back into the light through a world of concrete,

hydraulics and acoustics, which is usually hidden from the coach parties and

casual strollers of Wales Millennium Centre?

Backstage craftsmen help

us turn glitter to…

Final Update: Wardrobe Diaries video link

https://www.youtube.com/user/citrusarts#p/a/u/0/hTjAq2XZtzE" target="_blank">

The tour is now long over, at least it feels that way after 4 weeks.

These clips are from my low budget HD camera, and my edit programme cost me 20 quid.

For those of that couldn't make it to see the show, I hope this gives you a flavour of what we made, this time around.

Update. Wardrobe Diaries nears the end of our tour.

Last Wednesday’s show in the Weston Studio was fantastic, performed with energy and perfection of timing by cast & crew. I had my first experience doing the old post show discussion with the director which was a much easier ride than I had built it up to be. Also, Bridie and I were told that Citrus Arts have been selected to be one of the WMC Incubator companies for new work development, and a… Continue

Update. Wardrobe Diaries on the road in West, North and Mid Wales, with a review from Theatre Wales.

Our arrival at Pontardawe Arts Centre was a test of Bridie, Dai and my forward planning of how we tour our complicated set structure. It took all day and was only just ready in time for our first workshops with local circus company Organised Kaos which was a very busy, funny and energetic session at a lovely venue with very keen staff.

Next was an overnight jaunt up the west coast of Wales to Harlech. It’s such a privilege to be… Continue

Update. Wardrobe Diaries prepares to tour Wales.

Whilst we’re really looking forward to the tour, I’m a little sad to be leaving Riverfront. Their Discover Dance week that is now looking like an annual fixture is such a great gift to the artists and companies that Nic Young and the team at Riverfront support. The whole building was being used by four very different companies, which made it feel very alive, creative and busy.

The last show at Riverfront was much, much better as far… Continue

Update. 2nd performance of Wardrobe Diaries

I’ve committed to this blog, so it’s only right that I see it through, even in darker moments. It’s better for my health, and probably easier for any followers, if I stick to short paragraphs.

We opened last night with confused performers and sound and lighting cues still as work in progress. I called the cues to Dai, and we had a lot of fun seeing the company’s work take shape from the tech box.

For tonight’s show I gave performers a note on cranking up the enjoyment of… Continue

Update. 15th day of Wardrobe Diaries diary. Follow our journey.

A first run through, with lots of rigging cues tbc.

The Italian word for ‘Filler’ is ‘Catarza’ not that we ever, ever need to talk about that kind of thing. I need to check that spelling with the Italians.

Broken and bleeding calluses.

A looming, serious conversation about transitions.

Lovely lighting, as work in… Continue

Update. 12th day, a picture of the Wardrobe Diaries set.
