Kaite O'Reilly's Blog (33)

The Echo Chamber with The Llanarth Group

2012 is promising to be a full-on year for me, with several productions - all using different processes, creative teams and aesthetics. In anticipation of what I may learn or discover about practice, I started a blog back in 2011, realising that unless I gave myself a task and external focus, those reflections might remain buried and unexpressed. I suppose this is a writerly version of the EM Forster's 'How do I know what I think until I hear what I say?'

I've just begun rehearsals…

In Water I'm Weightless - workshop week - day two

So we’re dancing to jukebox Nigel Charnock at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. We’re following John McGrath’s directions, being imaged by designer Paul Clay and exploring yours truly O’Reilly’s words. It’s the end of the second day of a workshop week on In Water I’m Weightless, a National Theatre Wales production which will be happening next year as part of the Cultural Olympiad, and I’m giddy and exhausted and uncertain if we should really be having so much fun….…

on writing, on performance

I've begin to blog about process, theatre and performance... The next 12 months promise to be pretty wild, with 4 productions of my work, all very different in style, aesthetic, context and content, so I've set myself the task to reflect on this experience - what I think, what I learn, what I question...

Persians is unlike other processes I’ve undergone as a writer. When I’ve been perhaps the originator of a text, the first weeks of rehearsals are…

O'REILLY'S PERSIANS blog two

“There is no exact correlation between languages. This process becomes even more difficult and contingent when you’re translating between times as well, there is no exact correlation between periods.” Colin Teevan.…

PERSIANS. O'Reilly. blog one

How do you make a new version of the first play in the Western theatrical canon, which also happens to be the World’s oldest recorded script, first produced in 472 BCE and written, in my opinion, by a genius?

The PERSIANS group page has lain silent for so long partly because of the efforts needed to broach the above, and my superstitious Irish soul not wanting to hex the process in what has been one of the most illuminating and exhilarating projects of my life.

PERSIANS… Continue

Pink snakeskin boots and dramaturgs

And so to Madison, four hours on a Greyhound bus. The city recently lost its Rep, apparently owing to the economic downturn, so things are feeling a little chilly on the shores of the great lakes. Rattle on about what’s happening for us in Wales when I’m asked (and I am asked, frequently – people seem to be truly interested, even though I usually have to explain that no, Wales isn’t in England, nor is it near London). Realise how extraordinary the potential of NTW is, plus how vibrant the… Continue

away from Wales, but Wales not away from me....

84 degrees in Chicago and Gotham City shimmers in the unexpected heat. I'm trying to make the good weather compensation for missing the NTW housewarming - photos and blogs on this newfangled community thang helps, but i still feel like I've missed out...

Over in US for work and play, in Chicago for discussions on a production of my play 'peeling'.

Wales and theatre/performance is very much on my mind, not just because Mr McG suggested i write a US blog, but also as I'm reading Alyce… Continue
