A Provincial Life Event: One year on

A year ago this week, A Provincial Life opened at Sherman Cymru.

At my interview to be the emerging director on NTW's 17th Production, I remember telling Lucy Davies and Matt Ball how much working with Peter Gill (who adapted and directed it) could form a pivotal role in my aspirations to become a formidable director.

It’s funny how in the situations where we really want something we get to the bare bones of it. I’d normally skirt around, or indirectly say the same thing without really saying it.

But here I was faced with the opportunity of working with a man I admired and who I wanted to ask lots of questions.

A month later I sat with a slice of cake and a cup of tea in Peter’s living room, moving model furniture and imagining scene changes with Alison Chitty, Jane Slattery and Peter himself. I was in assistant director bliss.

Theatre comes and goes. The ephemeral nature of it is perhaps part of its appeal. But that doesn't mean we can’t look back and investigate what it was all about. What we learnt and why it was indeed pivotal or inspiring for those involved.

It has always been Peter’s intention to evaluate the Production openly in order to examine what is happening in Theatre in Wales and in his own words to question ‘what made it special’.

On Friday 15th March, we will have the chance to ask just that. There will be guest speakers, anecdotes and opportunities to use the production as a discussion point for a whole host of topics from ‘Adapting Chekhov’ to ‘Audience development’. We’d be delighted if you could come along.

Date: Friday 15th March

Place: The Rock Room, 10 feet Tall, 11A-12 Church Street, Cardiff, CF10 1BG

Time: 4pm-6pm

All welcome
