Arrival for Children's Theatre Festival

On Wednesday I arrived in Warsaw for a Theatre Festival, I was told that someone would meet me at the Airport but there was no-one carrying that piece of paper with my name on. Oh well it's daytime and things don't feel so scary for the lone traveller when it's light. After wandering around the airport I eventually find the bus that will take me to Centrum, I have no idea really where I am going as I booked my flight on Friday and haven't had time to digest the 'Rough Guide' that I bought in Luton Airport. I have a hotel address and have not been able to talk with my colleague since Friday. A Polish woman asks 'me' about the buses, I manage to reassure her and in return she helps me discover what stop to alight at. I get off and thankfully the hotel is right behind me, well you couldn't really miss it, it towers into the skyline. then..I view the most amazing sight which is the 'Palace of Cuture' or the wedding cake as it is described, it was a present from Stalin to the Polish people. It is magnificent, ugly and beautiful. I barely had any sleep the night before so rather than rest I feel it's best to keep going or I will not sleep that evening. I walk towards the 'Old Town' walking away from the commercial district and Warsaw starts to feel different, I receive a call from the delegate organiser Alicja, just to let me know she will catch up with me later and that she had sent someone to meet me at the airport-perhaps I should not have taken that toilet break(me and my bladder). My colleague Steve is on his way but untill I catch up with him I wander around the Old Town, it is smaller than I expect and resembles a 'stage set' bombed and incredibly rebuilt. I head back to put my feet up, Steve rings, he has just arrived and we have a drink in the bar while he fills me in on the festival and why we are there. The bar tab is a joke and I wonder what body part I will have to sell to buy another round, luckily we go out. We are both tired and don't want to go too far but want to get away from the district. We find an Italian restaurant and sit down only to discover that the couple behind us are having a row, Steve finds this very funny. But the male is not happy he stands and throws his cutlery down on his plate and shouts loudly, she disappears for a cigarette.....10 minutes later they are happy again he stands, walks over to her seat and plants a kiss on her head. It's over and Steve claps as we leave. Although tired we go for a 'half' we discover a bar called 'Lorelei' have a beer, Steve gets another in and is gone for a long time, I am on my way in from outside(it's cooler) and he is on his way to find me. He has got talking to someone and the Vodka (bought by new friend) is on the bar top I am instructed to drink it quickly, I sip it, it's nice and I want to taste it, I have been told it is an insult not to drink it quckly. It could be a long night!  There is someone else from the UK in the bar who works in the city and apparently he asked how did we manage to find the best bar in Warsaw? How indeed.  Blog tomorrow Children's Theatre honestly.

What a lovely account of your first night in Warsaw. Sounds like my first night in Paris in 1998 .... my first trip to Europe from Australia, young, naive, not speaking a word of French stepping out of the metro after a 36 hour flight ... bags in tow, only to be met by a victorious crowd of football supports as France had just won the world cup ... I knew then there was a world to see, wonderful people to meet and stories to listen to ... :-))
