This Thursday 27th October will see the first showcase from the new Writing for Performance Group at Aberystwyth Arts Centre - Beginnings. Featuring new short plays by nine local writers, the evening is an opportunity to see rehearsed, script-in-hand performances by a company of local directors and actors.

The group was established in May, meeting monthly to share work and explore the challenges of writing for theatre.

The company producing the performances features 24 people; writers, directors and actors who have all become involved in the project to support new writing for theatre. The directors and actors working on Beginnings come from many different community theatre groups and also includes staff and students from the Department of Theatre, Film and Television.

This first showcase features a wide range of styles and subject matter including cheese based misunderstandings, sea-monsters, losing your way in a wood, manipulative babies, problematic daughters, the history of Abba, love songs, dark family secrets and miracles.

Though many of the writers in the group are experienced writers in other mediums including writers for TV, short story writers and stand-up comedy, this will be the first time that most of the writers have ever written for theatre.

The next showcase of work, The Town with no Traffic Wardens, has already been planned for April 2012 and will see the group develop collaboratively on a piece about news in Aberystwyth.
