BOOKS TORTURED! DIRECTOR APPROVES!

DISCLAIMER: NO BOOKS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS BLOG POST. . . WELL, NOT MANY.

Imagine the scene. . . you're in an old police station and people around you are hurling books across the room (but not at each other, thankfully), stacking books like bricks and, dare I type it. . . ripping pages out of big, thick volumes. Isn't this the sort of thing people get arrested for? Or at least get slapped with an ASBO?

It might seem like mindless violence, but it was actually just the SHELF LIFE actors exploring the world of books in the early weeks of the rehearsels. They turned popular conventions on their head and spectacularly mis-treated some books. (I should probably add that the books were purchased by Volcano beforehand. They didn't just run into local bookshops and hack up the Bestseller's list. . .)

The result was idea explosions, creativity splurges and flying pages!!

WHERE THEY WERE: THE OLD POLICE STATION, SWANSEA

THE DAMAGE:

Poor book, his spine will never be the same again.

Duct tape? On books??? What does it all mean? Come along on April the 6th to find out. . .

HOW MUCH would this annoy a librarian?

Just in case I've got you all thinking that this SHELF LIFE bunch are a violent lot (and you have a sudden desire to lock up your own personal book collection) check out the images from Day(s) 2 and 3 of rehearsels. The question asked was:

What books would you include in a library?

War and Peace, History of Art, Chekov, Arthur Miller's Biography. . . seems civilised and not at all violent. Next time I'm in the same space as these guys, I won't be afraid to leave my paperbacks unattended.

PS. I am not responsible for any spelling mistakes in this blog. Years of using MS Word has ruined my brain. Blame Bill Gates and that Paper Clip that clogged up MS Word a few years back. . .

Is it morally defensible to use material in the show that's been obtained from books under these conditions? Phone Any Answers and have your say!
