CASTING CALL - MALE LEAD AND EXTRAS FOR SHORT FILM

CASTING CALL - "SHADOW"

SYNOPSIS

Our film will follow Robert, a young man in his mid-twenties, living alone in the inner city. During the day, he works behind the counter at a corner shop; by night, he heads out as 'Shadow', a masked vigilante; scaring off yobs with his paintball gun, feeding the local homeless, and putting up posters in order to promote his other identity. He sees himself as a somebody; helping people out, doing something that no one else does.

However, as we learn more about Robert, we soon realise that his altruism may not be entirely selfless. He looks down on what appears to be those belonging to the working class, he takes refuge in helping the homeless, whilst he seems to loathe people more successful than himself.

Does Shadow exist primarily to help people, or rather as an outlet/coping mechanism for Robert; a way to see himself as a 'somebody', rather than the 'nobody' he really is?

Robert (Lead)

Robert, mid-twenties, living alone in the inner city. He has a false view of society; that there are winners and losers, somebodies and nobodies. This is partly down to his lower middle-class upbringing. He now lives as, what he would call, a 'nobody'; working a 'menial' job with 'working class' people'. However, his alter-ego allows him to see himself as a 'somebody', above even those clearly more successful than him, arguing that 'they' don't do anything to help society. Robert needs 'Shadow'.

SOME MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE FILM

What we find fascinating about this character is how he views society and the world. Therefore, our approach to casting is very open; we have decided not limit ourselves in terms of height, ethnicity, colour etc. For Robert, the only requirements are that he looks as if he is in his mid-20s, and that he is not too much overweight.

We were influenced by the growing trend of real life superheroes worldwide; costumed people who head out in order to 'fight crime and help those in need'. A large majority however do not actually fight crime, they simply patrol the streets in costume. All some do is feed the homeless- a definite act of charity, yet the question this action raises is why a costume is needed in order to do so. Their collective argument against this accusation; that they dress up in order to communicate a message and to be seen as a symbol, forms the basis of what our film aims to explore: image, both how we see ourselves as well as how we present ourselves to the world. For Robert, this is through his alter ego- Shadow.
