When your tucking into your Christmas Turkey or Goose, or sat there hungrily wondering why you decided to 'be different' and buy duck this year (leaving you hungrier than a an offsted inspector eyeing up an inner city school to close)spare a thought for the dear Minister of Culture Ed Vaizey who is a full suporter of the ConDem coalition governments record on Arts Funding, following attacks on their record from leading theatre figures. He claims that the government will be investing £2.9 Billion into the Arts.

Now forgive me for being a cynical old codger but in a country rich in culture such as ours, diverse communities with cultural traditions of art and drama from all over the world, does £2.9 Billion really sound a lot. Lets consider the billions spent bailing out the investment banks after their caused this recession; the billions cut from disability and other benefits that ordinary people, possibly you, possibly me, possibly our neighbours, rely on to survive; last years £44 billion pound defence budget for a country with no discernible invasion or attack threat.

What is better? That our arts money be increased to bring out and encourage the mountain of cultural wealth that this nation has to offer or that the money be spent helping to keep the boss of HSBC or Barclays in their jobs or spent sending our under-equipped troops into other countries to kill or be killed just because Jonny Motorist is crying that his petrol has gone up by 50p a litre?

Controversial? Merry Christmas!
