Day 2 - The National Library - Aberystwyth

I have been surprised by the amount of traveling that I have done over the last two days. I had imagined myself sat at a desk for the best part of three years and as yet there is not even the slightest hint of a table, unless of course it were the kind you eat from. I was sat on the stairs in the departmental building for a time this morning. Waiting for a signature. On reflection this wasn't the best use of my time, however I do still need to make a few more trips up and down the hill to complete my registration and secure a library card. But this feels slightly less urgent now.

I found my way to the National Library of Wales and spent some time sat amongst the grand balconies in silence. I thought of the Welsh National Opera and Volcano and their future Swansea based collaboration Shelf Life. I wondered what stories lay hidden in the silence? What stories will remain when this year has passed?

I find a PhD colleague desperately climbing the walls of the solitude imposed by research. We talk for a while over coffee and conclude that being in the National Library on my second day is probably a fairly good start. Though I may just have exchanged stairwells for balconies. Where do I begin? Artists, productions, reading, locations, methodologies? I need to start speaking to people. I need to go elsewhere and see this thing that is the National Theatre of Wales up close. Away from the speculative silence of my research and into the action. In all honesty I'm not even sure where they are. Cardiff? Probably not any more. I email John McGrath. The The Valleys beckon.

Mike Pearson has agreed to meet with me on Thursday morning to talk about The Persians. I threaten to bring a video camera. After that I will Meet Carl, my main supervisor. I need a methodology. The first show is almost here!
