From Edinburgh to space… and back again.

Well, I had one of those moments last night when it was taking me 7 seconds to load a web page. I was getting incredibly frustrated, which resulted in me either swearing at, or trying to reconfigure all the various bits of tech that surrounded me at the Livestream control point of The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning, which is showing at the Edinburgh Fringe (and online) until 25th August.

Thinking there was a problem with my cabling, I followed the 24 metres of cables  from my desk to the satellite dish, which has been drilled into the side of a Art classroom, in a school in Edinburgh. And along the walk I reminded myself of how extraordinary it is that the path from my computer, (2 meters of ethernet cable, 22 meters of coax and then 22,000 miles to the KA Satellite in space) and back again, is only taking us 7 seconds.

And somewhere in Perth, in Western Australia, my big brother is using his smartphone, on a bus, watching what we’re doing in a High School in Edinburgh.

Tonight we’re going to be embedding the livefeed from the show into the Huffington Post website; and livestream.com’s set up means that this embed will work on mobile, web and tablets. You’ll be able to engage in a chat with other people around the globe, who are watching the show live along with an audience in the room, and you’ll be able to follow links to background sources, which I’ll be posting over my iPhones free 3g tethered connection…

Amazing.

So, watch tonight, or any other night during the run, and tell us what you think.

Yours, with a 7 second delay,

Katherine
