My favourite discovery of the week in my ongoing 'For Mountain, Sand & Sea' research has to be an image I found on a Russian web site.



Harold Godfrey Lowe, 5th Captain of The Titanic; who grew up in Barmouth (the one portrayed by Ioan Griffith at the end of James Cameron’s film version) utilizing the gymnasium on board the doomed ship.


If you are perplexed at what kind of activity the suited man in the background is engaged in?


I can reveal;


The Gymnasium of the Titanic was well equipped. A range of tools was developed to keep the on board guests in shape: early versions of Spinning Bikes, Chest Press and Cross Trainers. The Electric Horses in the back could be the predecessors of the Power Plate…

ah - i love electric horse riding! - reminds me of a tea room in warwick i used to deliver to, run by a fiery antique english lady in a wheelchair, whose husband was a russian ex wrestler. the tables were covered in lace, the walls were covered in 1930's russian wrestling pictures. he stood mute and solid in the corner while she beetled aroud, battered the disgruntled geordie chef, and then made us a very refined earl grey...
