We're looking for a creative practitioner to work on a project in Newport Primary School
Taking China as our starting point, we want to take Year 3 (8/9 year olds) pupils on a journey to a different culture. We want our explorers to know what it takes to traverse the Great Wall, take part in Tai Chi classes, be able to say a few phrases in Mandarin, learn a Beijing Opera fan dance, take part in a tea ceremony, and learn how to make and use a processional dragon.
We want to engage the children in a learning environment that encourages them to think about their place in the world and make the connection between Wales and China.

How can we make stronger connections between young people in Newport and our twin Guangxi Province in China?
We want this to be an adventure, full of excitement and rich learning opportunities. Students will document their learning digitally, creating blogs, interviews, reports and instructional videos. We want them to create a rich and colourful celebratory event to mark the start of the Chinese New Year, utilising all the new skills they've learnt, and share this with their peers and the wider community.

The project will also engage staff in discovering new ideas and methods for teaching, with teachers in turn sharing their expertise with the creative practitioner.
KEY PROJECT REQUIREMENTS AND TIMESCALE
The project will take place between October 2016 - Feb 2017 with reflection and evaluation taking place early in March 2017. We anticipate that around 1/4 of the sessions will take place in the second half of the Autumn term, with a more intense period of activity at the beginning of the spring term in the build up to Chinese New Year (28th Jan).
Upon recruitment, the practitioner will agree dates and times for delivery with staff, which will be set out in a contract for services with the school.
There is a total fee of around £3000 available for this project (not including materials). This must cover all practitioners’ fees and expenses (daily fee is £250.00 inclusive of any expenses and VAT where applicable); the practitioners’ fees are dependent on any additional practitioners needed to assist with the delivery (i.e. if two practitioners are recruited there would be £1500 each). We anticipate around 12 days of time available across the whole project, which will include time for planning with teachers, co-delivery and evaluation.
The successful applicant will be contracted directly by Eveswell through Lead Creative School Scheme funding to support this project. In addition, support will be provided by Creative Agent, Matt Ball, a freelance creative professional employed by Arts Council Wales to act as a critical friend, broker and creative advisor.

• An ability to look at an idea and broaden its horizons
• A commitment to genuine collaboration with learners and teachers
• An ability to reflect and communicate
• A willingness to learn and share skills
• A commitment to developing excellence in creative practice
• An ability to facilitate creative learning activities
• A confidence in risk taking
• The successful candidate/s will be required to undergo a DBS check for working with children and vulnerable adults.
• All creative practitioners appointed to the LCS scheme must attend a two day training session provided by Arts Council Wales and cannot be contracted without doing so. This training will take place 12th/13th October, in Nantgarw, costs of travel and subsistence only will be met by the school.
