Kaite O'Reilly wins the The Ted Hughes Prize for The Persians

Kaite O'Reilly has won the Ted Hughes Prize for Poetry for her extraordinary new version of Aeschylus's The Persians.  The sixth show in NTW's much lauded launch year has already won huge plaudits, including TMA best design award for Mike Brookes and Simon Banham, and enormous praise for Mike Pearson; but what a truly wonderful achievement for Kaite, to take on this difficult and complex text, often argued and worried over, and to create such a vibrantly living version that Britain's best poets would choose to celebrate her in this shining way.  Well done Kaite, we are all so very proud of you!

Ps. You were an inspiration when you taught us at Uni and I value having that opportunity for you to teach me in Scriptwriting.

Absolutely amazing Kaite - I thought what you did with the script was astounding and as I said to you before the words 'resonate through your soul'. The Persians performance is one that will stay with me forever.

Thank you all For your lovely words. In still gobsmacked by the results, but honoured and
grateful that the poetry society. The poet laureate and a swathe of wordsmiths (including our own bard Gillian Clarke) chose Persians. The Ted Hughes Prize for new work in poetry aims to broaden the definition of poetry and the form it may take - so less traditional modes like a
site-specific script, a soundscape, film, etc, are highlighted and celebrated. I'm honoured to be the second to win the award (poet Alice Oswald won last year) and grateful to NTW for giving me the opportunity to write it in the first place - but most importantly, thankful to the sublime cast and crew of practitioners - and Mike Pearson and Brookes - who brought it all so memorably to life.
